¹Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s brothers, and spoke with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying,

¹ ابیملک، پسر جدعون نزد خویشاوندان مادر خود به شکیم رفت و همه را جمع کرده به آنها گفت:

²“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”

² «به اطّلاع تمام مردم شکیم برسانید و از آنها بپرسید: آیا می‌خواهید هفتاد پسر جدعون حاکم بر شما باشند یا یک نفر که من هستم؟ و به یاد داشته باشید که من از گوشت و خون شما می‌باشم.»

³His mother’s brothers spoke of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, “He is our brother.”

³ پس خویشاوندان مادرش، از طرف او حرفهایی را که زده بود، به مردم شکیم گفتند. و آنها با کمال خوشی پیروی از ابیملک را قبول کردند و گفتند: «او برادر ماست.»

⁴They gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal Berith, with which Abimelech hired vain and light fellows, who followed him.

⁴ آنها هفتاد سکّهٔ نقره، از پرستشگاه بعل عهد به او دادند. ابیملک با آن پول، مردان ولگرد و بیکار را اجیر کرد تا به او بپیوندند.

⁵He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone: but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.

⁵ بعد ابیملک به خانهٔ پدر خود به عفره رفت و هفتاد برادر خود را روی یک سنگ کشت. تنها کوچکترین آنها، که یوتام نام داشت، زنده ماند؛ زیرا او خود را پنهان کرده بود.

⁶All the men of Shechem assembled themselves together, and all the house of Millo, and went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.

⁶ بعد همهٔ ساکنان شکیم و بیت ملو، کنار ستون درخت بلوط در شکیم، او را به پادشاهی برگزیدند.

⁷When they told it to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.

⁷ وقتی یوتام باخبر شد، به بالای کوه جَرزیم ایستاد و با صدای بلند به مردم گفت: «ای ساکنان شکیم، به من گوش بدهید تا خدا به شما گوش بدهد.

⁸The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’

⁸ یک روز درختان تصمیم گرفتند که پادشاهی برای خود انتخاب کنند. آنها اول پیش درخت زیتون رفتند و گفتند: 'بیا پادشاه ما باش.'

⁹“But the olive tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my fatness, with which by me they honor God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

⁹ امّا درخت زیتون به آنها گفت: 'آیا می‌خواهید که من از روغن خود، که به وسیلهٔ آن خدایان و اشخاص را احترام می‌گذارند، صرف نظر کنم و بروم حاکم درختان دیگر باشم؟'

¹⁰“The trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and reign over us.’

¹⁰ بعد درختان به درخت انجیر گفتند: 'بیا پادشاه ما شو.'

¹¹“But the fig tree said to them, ‘Should I leave my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

¹¹ درخت انجیر جواب داد: 'من نمی‌خواهم که شیرینی و میوهٔ خوب خود را ترک کنم و بروم و بر درختان دیگر پادشاهی کنم.'

¹²“The trees said to the vine, ‘Come and reign over us.’

¹² سپس پیش تاک انگور رفتند و گفتند: 'بیا پادشاه ما شو.'

¹³“The vine said to them, ‘Should I leave my new wine, which cheers God and man, and go to wave back and forth over the trees?’

¹³ تاک گفت: 'آیا باید از شراب خود که برای خدایان و انسان خوشی می‌آورد صرف‌نظر کنم و حاکم درختان دیگر شوم؟'

¹⁴“Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘Come and reign over us.’

¹⁴ بالاخره پیش بوته خار رفتند و گفتند: 'بیا و پادشاه ما باش.'

¹⁵“The bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you anoint me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

¹⁵ بوتهٔ خار جواب داد: 'اگر به راستی می‌خواهید که من پادشاه شما شوم، پس بیایید در سایهٔ من پناه ببرید، وگرنه آتشی از من خواهد برخاست که حتّی تمام سروهای آزاد لبنان را خواهد سوزانید.'

¹⁶“Now therefore, if you have dealt truly and righteously, in that you have made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him according to the deserving of his hands

¹⁶ «اکنون خوب فکر کنید که آیا انتخاب ابیملک به عنوان پادشاه، کار درستی است؟ آیا نسبت به جدعون و خاندانش احسان نموده‌اید و کاری که لایق او باشد، به عمل آورده‌اید؟

¹⁷(for my father fought for you, and risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

¹⁷ پدر من برای شما و به‌خاطر شما جنگ کرد. زندگی خود را به خطر انداخت و شما را از دست مدیانیان نجات داد.

¹⁸and you have risen up against my father’s house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy persons, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother);

¹⁸ امّا شما امروز برضد خانوادهٔ پدرم برخاسته‌اید و هفتاد پسر او را روی یک سنگ کُشتید و ابیملک را که پسر کنیز اوست، فقط به‌خاطر اینکه یکی از اقوام شماست به عنوان پادشاه خود انتخاب کردید.

¹⁹if you then have dealt truly and righteously with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:

¹⁹ اگر شما یقین دارید که از روی راستی و صداقت این کار را کرده‌اید و احترام جدعون را بجا آورده‌اید، من نیز آرزو می‌کنم که شما و ابیملک با هم خوش باشید.

²⁰but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.”

²⁰ وگرنه، آتشی از ابیملک برخیزد که همهٔ ساکنان شکیم و بیت ملُو را بسوزاند و تمام مردم شکیم و بیت ملو و نیز خود ابیملک را از بین ببرد.»

²¹Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and lived there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.

²¹ بعد یوتام از آنجا گریخت و از ترس برادر خود، ابیملك، به بَئیر فرار کرد.

²²Abimelech was prince over Israel three years.

²² ابیملک مدّت سه سال بر اسرائیل حکومت کرد.

²³God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

²³ آنگاه خداوند روح شرارت بین ابیملک و مردم شکیم ایجاد کرد و مردم شکیم برضد ابیملک شورش نمودند.

²⁴that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.

²⁴ پس از این حادثه، ابیملک و ساکنان شکیم که در قتل هفتاد پسر جدعون با او همدست بودند، به سزای کارهای خود رسیدند.

²⁵The men of Shechem set an ambush for him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.

²⁵ مردم شکیم برای حمله بر ابیملك، در امتداد جاده‌ای که به بالای کوه می‌رفت، کمین کردند و هرکسی را که از آنجا می‌گذشت، غارت می‌کردند. کسی به ابیملک خبر داد.

²⁶Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brothers, and went over to Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

²⁶ جَعل پسر عابد، با خویشاوندان خود به شکیم آمد و در آنجا، در بین مردم شهرت و اعتبار زیادی پیدا کرد.

²⁷They went out into the field, and harvested their vineyards, and trod the grapes, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.

²⁷ یک روز آنها بیرون رفتند و از تاکستانی انگور چیدند و جشن گرفتند. سپس به پرستشگاه خدای خود رفتند و در آنجا خوردند و نوشیدند و ابیملک را مسخره کردند.

²⁸Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Isn’t he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: but why should we serve him?

²⁸ جَعل از مردم پرسید: «ابیملک کیست؟ چرا ما مردم شکیم باید او را خدمت کنیم؟ آیا او پسر جدعون و نام دستیارش زَبول نیست؟ ما باید به جدّ خود حامور وفادار باشیم.

²⁹Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech.” He said to Abimelech, “Increase your army, and come out!”

²⁹ ای کاش این مردم زیر دست من می‌بودند تا من ابیملک را از بین می‌بردم. آنگاه به ابیملک می‌گفتم: تمام لشکرت را جمع کن و به جنگ ما بیا.»

³⁰When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.

³⁰ امّا وقتی زَبول حاکم شهر، سخنان جعل پسر عابد را شنید، بسیار خشمگین شد.

³¹He sent messengers to Abimelech craftily, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and behold, they incite the city against you.

³¹ او پیامی به ابیملک در ارومه فرستاده گفت: «جعل پسر عابد و خویشاوندان او به شکیم آمده‌اند و مردم را برضد تو می‌شورانند.

³²Now therefore, go up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field:

³² پس هنگام شب با همراهانت بروید و پنهان شوید.

³³and it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early, and rush on the city; and behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, then may you do to them as you shall find occasion.”

³³ صبح روز بعد، وقت طلوع آفتاب بروید و به شهر حمله کنید. وقتی‌که او و مردانش برای مقابله آمدند، آن وقت هر معامله‌ای که می‌خواهی با آنها بکن.»

³⁴Abimelech rose up, and all the people who were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.

³⁴ پس ابیملک و همهٔ کسانی‌که با او بودند، شبانگاه رفتند و به چهار دسته تقسیم شده، در کمین نشستند.

³⁵Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people who were with him, from the ambush.

³⁵ وقتی صبح شد، جعل بیرون رفت و نزد دروازهٔ شهر ایستاد. ابیملک با همراهان خود از کمینگاه بیرون آمد.

³⁶When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Behold, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” Zebul said to him, “You see the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.”

³⁶ چون جعل آنها را دید، به زبول گفت: «آن مردم را می‌بینی که از کوه پایین می‌آیند!» زبول به او گفت: «تو سایهٔ کوه را مردم خیال کردی.»

³⁷Gaal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down by the middle of the land, and one company comes by the way of the oak of Meonenim.”

³⁷ جعل باز گفت: «ببین مردم به طرف ما می‌آیند و یک گروه دیگر هم از راه بلوط مَعُونیم می‌آیند.»

³⁸Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”

³⁸ آنگاه زبول رو به طرف او کرده پرسید: «کجاست آن حرفهای توخالی‌ای که می‌زدی؟ یادت می‌آید که می‌گفتی: ابیملک کیست که ما خدمت او را بکنیم؟ اینها کسانی هستند که تو به آنها ناسزا می‌گفتی. پس حالا برو و با آنها جنگ کن.»

³⁹Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.

³⁹ جعل پیشاپیش مردم شکیم برای جنگ با ابیملک رفت.

⁴⁰Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many fell wounded, even to the entrance of the gate.

⁴⁰ ابیملک او را شکست داد و او فرار کرد. بسیاری از مردم شکیم زخمی شدند و تا نزدیک دروازهٔ شهر، به هر طرف روی زمین افتادند.

⁴¹Abimelech lived at Arumah: and Zebul drove out Gaal and his brothers, that they should not dwell in Shechem.

⁴¹ ابیملک در ارومه ساکن شد و زبول جعل را با وابستگانش از شکیم بیرون راند تا دیگر در آنجا زندگی نکنند.

⁴²It happened on the next day, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.

⁴² روز دیگر مردم شکیم به صحرا رفتند و ابیملک باخبر شد.

⁴³He took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field; and he looked, and behold, the people came forth out of the city; He rose up against them, and struck them.

⁴³ او مردان خود را جمع کرد و به سه دسته تقسیم کرد و در صحرا کمین کردند. وقتی مردم را دیدند که از شهر بیرون می‌آیند، از کمینگاه خود خارج شدند و همه را به قتل رساندند.

⁴⁴Abimelech, and the companies that were with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city: and the two companies rushed on all who were in the field, and struck them.

⁴⁴ ابیملک و همراهانش با شتاب رفتند و در جلوی دروازهٔ شهر ایستادند تا نگذارند که مردم به شهر داخل شوند. در عین حال دو دستهٔ دیگر آنها، به کسانی‌که در صحرا بودند حمله کردند و همه را کشتند.

⁴⁵Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and killed the people who were therein: and he beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.

⁴⁵ ابیملک تمام آن روز جنگ کرد تا اینکه شهر را به تصرّف خود درآورد. همهٔ کسانی را که در شهر بودند، از بین بردند. شهر را ویران کردند و در آن نمک پاشیدند.

⁴⁶When all the men of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered into the stronghold of the house of Elberith.

⁴⁶ وقتی مردمی که در نزدیک بُرج شهر بودند، از واقعه باخبر شدند، به قلعهٔ پرستشگاه خدای عهد پناه بردند.

⁴⁷It was told Abimelech that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

⁴⁷ وقتی ابیملک اطّلاع یافت که ساکنان بُرج شکیم در یک‌‌جا جمع شده‌اند،

⁴⁸Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it up, and laid it on his shoulder: and he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done!”

⁴⁸ با همراهان خود بر بالای کوه صَلمُون رفت. تبری را به دست گرفته، شاخهٔ درختی را برید و آن را بر شانهٔ خود گذاشت. آنگاه به همراهان خود گفت: «کاری که من کردم شما هم فوراً بکنید!»

⁴⁹All the people likewise each cut down his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them at the base of the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire on them; so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.

⁴⁹ پس هرکدام یک شاخهٔ درخت را بریده، به دنبال ابیملک رفتند. شاخه‌ها را بردند و در اطراف قلعه انباشته و آنها را آتش زدند. همهٔ مردم بُرج شکیم، که در حدود یک‌هزار مرد و زن بودند، هلاک شدند.

⁵⁰Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.

⁵⁰ بعد ابیملک به شهر تاباص رفت. در آنجا اردو زد و آن را تصرّف کرد.

⁵¹But there was a strong tower within the city, and there fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut themselves in, and went up to the roof of the tower.

⁵¹ امّا در بین شهر یک بُرج بسیار مستحکم وجود داشت. پس همهٔ مردم، زن و مرد و رهبران به داخل آن بُرج رفتند و دروازه‌ها را بستند. سپس چند نفر برای دیده‌بانی به پشت بام بُرج رفتند.

⁵²Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.

⁵² ابیملک برای حمله به طرف بُرج رفت. وقتی به دروازهٔ بُرج نزدیک شد تا آن را به آتش بزند،

⁵³A certain woman cast an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, and broke his skull.

⁵³ یکی از زنها سنگ آسیایی گرفته بر سر ابیملک انداخت و کاسهٔ سرش را شکست.

⁵⁴Then he called hastily to the young man his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword, and kill me, that men not say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’ His young man thrust him through, and he died.”

⁵⁴ ابیملک به جوان سلاحدار خود گفت: «شمشیرت را بِکش و مرا بکُش تا مبادا بگویند: یک زن او را کُشت.» پس آن جوان شمشیر خود را به شکم او فرو کرد و او را کشت.

⁵⁵When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his place.

⁵⁵ چون مردم اسرائیل دیدند که ابیملک مرده است، همه به خانه‌های خود برگشتند.

⁵⁶Thus God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father, in killing his seventy brothers;

⁵⁶ به این ترتیب خدا، ابیملک را به‌خاطر گناهی که در مقابل پدر خود کرد و هفتاد پسر او را کشت، به سزای کارهایش رساند. خدا همچنین بلای شرارت مردم شکیم را بر سر خودشان آورد. به این ترتیب نفرین یوتام، پسر جدعون به حقیقت پیوست.

⁵⁷and all the wickedness of the men of Shechem did God requite on their heads: and on them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

⁵⁷ خدا همچنین بلای شرارت مردم شکیم را بر سر خودشان آورد. به این ترتیب نفرین یوتام، پسر جدعون به حقیقت پیوست.
