¹Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

¹ آنگاه عیسی به مردم و شاگردان خود گفت:

²saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat.

² «چون علما و فریسیان بر كرسی موسی نشسته‌اند،

³ All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.

³ شما باید به هرچه آنها می‌گویند گوش دهید و مطابق آن عمل نمایید امّا از کارهای آنان پیروی نكنید، زیرا خود آنها آنچه می‌گویند، نمی‌کنند.

⁴ For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

⁴ آنها بارهای سنگین را می‌بندند و بر دوش مردم می‌گذارند درحالی‌که خودشان حاضر نیستند برای بلند كردن آن بار حتّی انگشت خود را تكان دهند.

⁵ But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries phylacteries (tefillin in Hebrew) are small leather pouches that some Jewish men wear on their forehead and arm in prayer. They are used to carry a small scroll with some Scripture in it. See Deuteronomy 6:8. broad, enlarge the fringes or, tassels of their garments,

⁵ هرچه می‌کنند برای تظاهر و خودنمایی است. دعاهای بسته شده به بازو و پیشانی خود را قطورتر و دامن ردای خویش را پهن‌تر می‌سازند.

⁶ and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

⁶ آنها دوست دارند در صدر مجالس بنشینند و در کنیسه‌ها بهترین جا را داشته باشند

⁷ the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.

⁷ و مردم در کوچه‌ها به آنها سلام نمایند و آنها را 'استاد' خطاب كنند.

⁸ But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.

⁸ امّا شما نباید 'استاد' خوانده شوید، زیرا شما یک استاد دارید و همهٔ شما برادر هستید.

⁹ Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.

⁹ هیچ‌کس را بر روی زمین پدر نخوانید، زیرا شما یک پدر دارید، یعنی همان پدر آسمانی.

¹⁰ Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.

¹⁰ و نباید 'پیشوا' خوانده شوید زیرا شما یک پیشوا دارید كه مسیح است.

¹¹ But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.

¹¹ کسی در میان شما از همه بزرگتر است كه خادم همه باشد.

¹² Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

¹² زیرا هرکه خود را بزرگ سازد حقیر خواهد شد و هرکه خود را فروتن سازد به بزرگی خواهد رسید.

¹³ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

¹³ «وای بر شما ای علما و فریسیان ریاكار! شما درهای پادشاهی آسمان را بر روی مردم می‌بندید، خودتان وارد نمی‌شوید و دیگران را هم كه می‌خواهند وارد شوند، باز می‌دارید. [

¹⁴ “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter. Some Greek manuscripts reverse the order of verses 13 and 14, and some omit verse 13, numbering verse 14 as 13.

¹⁴ وای بر شما ای علما و فریسیان ریاكار، شما مال بیوه زنها را می‌بلعید و حال آنكه محض خودنمایی نماز خود را طول می‌دهید، به این جهت شما شدید‌ترین كیفرها را خواهید دید.]

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna or, Hell as yourselves.

¹⁵ «وای بر شما ای علما و فریسیان ریاكار، شما دریا و خشكی را طی می‌كنید تا کسی را پیدا كنید كه دین شما را بپذیرد. و وقتی‌که موفّق شدید، او را دو برابر بدتر از خودتان سزاوار جهنّم می‌سازید.

¹⁶ “Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’

¹⁶ «وای بر شما ای راهنمایان كور، شما می‌گویید: اگر کسی به معبد بزرگ سوگند بخورد چیزی نیست، امّا اگر به طلاهای معبد بزرگ سوگند بخورد، موظّف است به سوگند خود وفا كند.

¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

¹⁷ ای احمقان و ای كوران، كدام مهمتر است، طلا، یا معبد بزرگ كه طلا را تقدیس می‌كند؟

¹⁸ ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’

¹⁸ شما می‌گویید: هرگاه کسی به قربانگاه سوگند بخورد چیزی نیست امّا اگر به هدایایی كه در قربانگاه قرار دارد، سوگند بخورد موظّف است به آن عمل كند.

¹⁹ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

¹⁹ ای كوران! كدام مهمتر است، هدایا، یا قربانگاهی كه هدایا را تقدیس می‌كند؟

²⁰ He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.

²⁰ کسی‌که به قربانگاه سوگند یاد می‌كند به آن و به هرچه بر روی آن است، سوگند می‌خورد

²¹ He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living NU reads “lives” in it.

²¹ و کسی‌که به معبد بزرگ سوگند می‌خورد به آن و به خدایی كه در آن ساكن است، سوگند خورده است.

²² He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.

²² و هرگاه کسی به آسمان سوگند بخورد، به تخت خدا و آن‌کس كه بر آن می‌نشیند سوگند خورده است.

²³ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, cumin is an aromatic seed from Cuminum cyminum, resembling caraway in flavor and appearance. It is used as a spice. and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

²³ «وای بر شما ای علما و فریسیان ریاكار، شما از نعناع و شوید و زیره ده‌یک می‌دهید، امّا مهمترین احكام شریعت را كه عدالت و رحمت و صداقت است، نادیده گرفته‌اید. شما باید اینها را انجام دهید و در عین حال از انجام سایر احكام نیز غفلت نكنید.

²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!

²⁴ ای راهنمایان كور كه پشه را صافی می‌کنید و شتر را می‌بلعید.

²⁵ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness. TR reads “self-indulgence” instead of “unrighteousness”

²⁵ «وای بر شما ای علما و فریسیان ریاكار، شما بیرون پیاله و بشقاب را پاک می‌کنید درحالی‌که درون آن از ظلم و ناپرهیزی پُر است

²⁶ You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.

²⁶ ای فریسی كور، اول درون پیاله را پاک كن كه در آن صورت بیرون آن هم پاک خواهد بود.

²⁷ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

²⁷ «وای بر شما ای علما و فریسیان ریاكار، شما مثل مقبره‌های سفید شده‌ای هستید كه ظاهری زیبا دارند، امّا داخل آنها پر از استخوانهای مردگان و انواع كثافات است!

²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

²⁸ شما هم همین‌طور ظاهراً مردمانی درستكار ولی در باطن پر از ریاكاری و شرارت هستید.

²⁹ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,

²⁹ «وای بر شما ای علما و فریسیان ریاكار، شما مقبره‌های انبیا را می‌سازید و بناهایی را كه به یادبود مقدّسین ساخته شده، تزئین می‌کنید

³⁰ and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’

³⁰ و می‌گویید: 'اگر ما در زمان نیاکان خود زنده بودیم، هرگز با آنان در قتل انبیا شركت نمی‌کردیم.'

³¹ Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.

³¹ به این ترتیب تصدیق می‌کنید كه فرزندان کسانی هستید كه انبیا را به قتل رسانیده‌اند.

³² Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.

³² پس بروید و آنچه را كه نیاکانتان شروع كردند به اتمام رسانید.

³³ You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna or, Hell ?

³³ ای ماران، ای افعی‌زادگان، شما چگونه از مجازات دوزخ می‌گریزید؟

³⁴ Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;

³⁴ به این جهت من انبیا و حكما و علما را برای شما می‌فرستم، امّا شما بعضی را می‌کشید و مصلوب می‌کنید و بعضی را هم در كنیسه‌هایتان تازیانه می‌زنید و شهر به شهر می‌رانید

³⁵ that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.

³⁵ و از این جهت خون همهٔ نیک‌مردان خدا كه بر زمین ریخته شده، برگردن شما خواهد بود، از هابیل معصوم گرفته تا زكریا فرزند برخیا كه او را در بین اندرون مقدّس معبد بزرگ و قربانگاه كشتید.

³⁶ Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

³⁶ در حقیقت به شما می‌گویم گناه تمام این كارها به گردن این نسل خواهد بود.

³⁷ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!

³⁷ «ای اورشلیم، ای اورشلیم، ای شهری كه انبیا را به قتل رسانیدی و رسولانی را كه به نزد تو فرستاده شدند سنگسار كردی! چه بسیار اوقاتی كه آرزو كردم مانند مرغی كه جوجه‌های خود را زیر پر و بال خود جمع می‌کند، فرزندان تو را به دور خود جمع كنم؛ امّا تو نخواستی.

³⁸ Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

³⁸ اكنون خانهٔ شما متروک به شما واگذار خواهد شد! و بدانید كه دیگر هرگز مرا نخواهید دید تا روزی كه بگویید: مبارک است کسی‌که به نام خدا می‌آید.»

³⁹ For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’” Psalm 118:26

³⁹ و بدانید كه دیگر هرگز مرا نخواهید دید تا روزی كه بگویید: مبارک است کسی‌که به نام خدا می‌آید.»
