¹All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broad place that was before the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.

¹ تا ماه هفتم تمام بنی‌اسرائیل در شهرهای خود ساکن شده بودند. در نخستین روز این ماه همه در میدان نزدیک دروازهٔ آب گرد آمدند. ایشان از عزرا که کاهن و عالِم تورات بود درخواست کردند، کتاب تورات را که خداوند از طریق موسی به اسرائیل داده بود، بیاورد.

²Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

² پس مردان، زنان و کودکانی که در سنی بودند که درک می‌کردند، گرد آمده بودند و عزرا کتاب را به آنجا آورد.

³He read therein before the broad place that was before the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.

³ او در میدان نزدیک دروازه، از سپیده‌دَم تا ظهر تورات را برای آنان خواند و همه با دقّت گوش فرا دادند.

⁴Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

⁴ عزرا بر روی سکوی چوبی که برای آن کار ساخته بود، ایستاد. در سمت راست او متتیا و شمع، عنایا، اوریا، حلقیا و معسیا ایستاده بودند و در سمت چپ او فدایا و میشائیل و ملکیا، حاشوم، حشبدانه، زکریا و مشلام ایستاده بودند.

⁵Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

⁵ عزرا بر روی سکو بالاتر از مردم ایستاده بود و همهٔ به او چشم دوخته بودند. هنگامی‌که تورات را گشود، همه سرپا ایستادند.

⁶and Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.

⁶ آنگاه عزرا گفت: «سپاس خداوند را، خدای بزرگ را!» همهٔ مردم دستهای خود را به سوی آسمان برافراشتند و پاسخ دادند، «آمین، آمین!» زانو زدند و روی خود را برای پرستش به زمین گذاشتند.

⁷Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stayed in their place.

⁷ سپس برخاستند و در جای خود ایستادند و تعدادی از لاویان یعنی یشوع، بانی، شربیا، یامین، عقوب، شبتای، هودیا، معسیا، قلیطا، عزریا، یوزاباد، حنان و فلایا تورات را برای مردم تفسیر کردند.

⁸They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

⁸ لاویان تورات را به طور شفاهی برای مردم ترجمه کردند و آن را به مردم توضیح می‌دادند تا آن را بفهمند.

⁹Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, “This day is holy to Yahweh your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.

⁹ هنگامی‌که همهٔ مردم شنیدند و دانستند که تورات چه انتظاری دارد، گریستند. پس نحمیا فرماندار، عزرای کاهن و عالِم و لاویانی که تورات را به مردم توضیح می‌دادند به همهٔ آنان گفتند: «امروز برای خداوند، خدای شما روز مقدّسی است. پس نباید ماتم بگیرید و گریه کنید.

¹⁰Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved; for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”

¹⁰ اکنون به خانه‌هایتان بروید و جشن بگیرید. غذا و شراب خود را با کسانی‌که به اندازهٔ کافی ندارند قسمت کنید. امروز روز مقدّسی برای خداوند است، غمگین نباشید. شادمانی که خداوند به شما می‌دهد، شما را نیرومند خواهد ساخت.»

¹¹So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be grieved.”

¹¹ پس لاویان می‌گشتند تا مردم را آرام کنند و بگویند که در چنین روزی غمگین نباشند.

¹²All the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

¹² آنگاه مردم به خانه‌هایشان رفتند و با شادمانی خوردند و نوشیدند و آنچه را که داشتند با دیگران قسمت کردند، زیرا آنچه را که برای ایشان خوانده شده بود، فهمیدند.

¹³On the second day were gathered together the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to give attention to the words of the law.

¹³ روز بعد سران خاندانها با کاهنان و لاویان نزد عزرا رفتند تا تعالیم تورات را بخوانند.

¹⁴They found written in the law, how that Yahweh had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;

¹⁴ آنگاه دریافتند در تورات نوشته شده که خداوند از طریق موسی امر فرموده بود که قوم اسرائیل در عید خیمه‌ها در چادر زندگی کنند.

¹⁵and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, and branches of wild olive, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.”

¹⁵ بنابراین آنان دستورهای زیر را دادند و ایشان را به اورشلیم و شهرها و روستاها فرستادند: «به تپّه‌ها بروید و شاخه‌های زیتون، زیتون وحشی، آس و نخل و سایر درختان بیاورید و مطابق دستور تورات خیمه‌ها بسازید.»

¹⁶So the people went out, and brought them, and made themselves booths, everyone on the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of God’s house, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

¹⁶ پس مردم بیرون رفتند و شاخه‌ها آوردند و بر بام خانه‌های خود، در حیاطهای خود، در حیاط معبد بزرگ و در میدان شهر در نزدیکی دروازهٔ آب و دروازهٔ افرایم برای خود چادرها ساختند.

¹⁷All the assembly of those who had come again out of the captivity made booths, and lived in the booths; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the children of Israel had not done so. There was very great gladness.

¹⁷ همهٔ کسانی‌که از تبعید بازگشته بودند، چادر ساختند و در آنها زندگی کردند. از زمان یوشع پسر نون تا آن روز بنی‌اسرائیل چنین کاری نکرده بودند و همه بسیار شادمان بودند. از نخستین روز جشن تا روز پایانی، هر روز قسمتی از تورات را می‌خواندند. آنان هفت روز جشن گرفتند و در روز هشتم، برای مراسم پایانی، مطابق تورات گرد هم آمدند.

¹⁸Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

¹⁸ از نخستین روز جشن تا روز پایانی، هر روز قسمتی از تورات را می‌خواندند. آنان هفت روز جشن گرفتند و در روز هشتم، برای مراسم پایانی، مطابق تورات گرد هم آمدند.
