¹Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

¹ خداوند به موسی فرمود:

²“Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them.”

² «از هر طایفه، یک رهبر برای جاسوسی به سرزمین کنعان که به آنها بخشیده‌ام، بفرست.»

³Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Yahweh: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

³ موسی طبق دستور خداوند عمل کرده، از اردوگاه خود در صحرای فاران، رهبرانی به سرزمین کنعان فرستاد. اسامی آنها عبارتند از: طایفهرهبر شموع، پسر زکور،از طایفهٔ رئوبین، شافاط، پسر حوری،از طایفهٔ شمعون، کالیب، پسر یفنه،از طایفهٔ یهودا، یجال، پسر یوسف،از طایفهٔ یساکار، هوشع، پسر نون،از طایفهٔ افرایم، فلطی، پسر رافو،از طایفهٔ بنیامین، جدیئیل، پسر سودی،از طایفهٔ زبولون، جدی، پسر سوسی،از طایفهٔ منسی، عمیئیل، پسر جملی،از طایفهٔ دان، ستور، پسر میکائیل،از طایفهٔ اشیر، نحبی، پسر وفسی،از طایفهٔ نفتالی، جاوئیل، پسر ماکی،از طایفهٔ جاد.

⁴These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

⁴ اینها نامهای کسانی بودند که موسی برای جاسوسی به آن سرزمین فرستاد. موسی نام هوشع، پسر نون را به یوشع تبدیل کرد.

⁵Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

⁵ هنگامی‌که موسی آنها را فرستاد، به ایشان دستور داد که از اینجا به طرف شمال، یعنی به جنوب سرزمین کنعان و سپس به قسمت کوهپایه بروید

⁶Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

⁶ و وضع آنجا را بررسی کنید که آنجا چطور سرزمینی است، چقدر جمعیّت دارد و چقدر قوی هستند.

⁷Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

⁷ زمین آنها حاصلخیز است، یا خیر؟ مردم آنجا در شهرهای بی‌حصار زندگی می‌کنند و یا در شهرهای مستحکم؟

⁸Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

⁸ خاک زمین حاصلخیز است، یا بایر؟ آنجا درختان زیاد دارد، یا نه؟ شجاع باشید وسعی کنید که از میوه و محصول آنجا مقداری را برای نمونه، با خود بیاورید. (آن موقع فصل نوبر انگور بود.)

⁹Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

⁹ پس آنها رفتند و وضع زمین را از بیابان سین تا رحوب در نزدیکی گذرگاه حمات، بررسی نمودند

¹⁰Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

¹⁰ و از قسمت جنوب آنجا عبور کرده، به حبرون رسیدند. در آنجا خاندان اخیمان، شیشای و تلمای، که از سلسلهٔ عناق بودند، زندگی می‌کردند. (حبرون هفت سال قبل از صُوعَن مصر بنا شده بود.)

¹¹Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

¹¹ سپس به وادی اشکول وارد شدند و از آنجا یک خوشه انگور چیدند و با خود بردند. این خوشه انگور آن‌قدر سنگین بود که آن را به چوبی بسته، دو نفر بر شانه‌های خود حمل می‌کردند. آنها همچنین مقداری انار و انجیر هم به عنوان نمونه، با خود بردند.

¹²Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

¹² آن وادی را به‌خاطر آن خوشهٔ انگور، اشکول (یعنی وشه) نامیدند.

¹³Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

¹³ بعد از چهل روز آنها از سفر برگشتند

¹⁴Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

¹⁴ و پیش موسی، هارون و تمام قوم اسرائیل که در قادش، واقع در صحرای فاران اردو زده بودند، رفتند و چگونگی سفر خود را به اطّلاع آنها رساندند و میوه‌هایی را که با خود آورده بودند، به آنها نشان دادند.

¹⁵Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

¹⁵ آنها به موسی گفتند: «به سرزمینی که ما را فرستادید، رفتیم و آن را بررسی کردیم. آنجا یک سرزمین غنی و حاصلخیز است. اینها میوه‌های آنجاست که برای نمونه با خود آوردیم.

¹⁶These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

¹⁶ امّا ساکنان آنجا مردم نیرومندی هستند و در شهرهای بزرگ و مستحکم زندگی می‌کنند. همچنین فرزندان عناق غول پیکر را هم در آنجا دیدیم.

¹⁷Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country:

¹⁷ مردم عمالیق در جنوب زندگی می‌کنند؛ حِتّیان، یبوسیان و اموریان در مناطق کوهستانی و کنعانیان در سواحل دریای مدیترانه و رود اردن زندگی می‌کنند.»

¹⁸and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

¹⁸ کالیب مردم را در حضور موسی ساکت کرد و گفت: «فوراً برویم و آنجا را تصرّف کنیم، چون یقین دارم که بر آنها پیروز می‌شویم.»

¹⁹and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

¹⁹ آنگاه مردانی که با او به آنجا رفته بودند گفتند: «ما نمی‌توانیم با آنها مردم مقابله کنیم، زیرا آنها قویتر از ما هستند.»

²⁰and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.”

²⁰ آنها دربارهٔ سرزمینی که تجسس کرده بودند، گزارش بدی به قوم اسرائیل دادند. آنها گفتند: «سرزمینی را که ما برای جاسوسی به آنجا رفتیم، ساکنان سرزمین خود را می‌بلعد. مردمی را که در آنجا دیدیم همه قوی‌هیکل بودند. ما در آنجا عناقی‌ها را دیدیم، آنها آن‌قدر قوی و بلند قامت هستند که ما در مقابل آنها خود را کوچک مثل ملخ احساس می‌کردیم و آنها نیز در مورد ما همینطور فکر می‌کردند.»

²¹So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

²¹ ما در آنجا عناقی‌ها را دیدیم، آنها آن‌قدر قوی و بلند قامت هستند که ما در مقابل آنها خود را کوچک مثل ملخ احساس می‌کردیم و آنها نیز در مورد ما همینطور فکر می‌کردند.»

²²They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

²³They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.

²⁴That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.

²⁵They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

²⁶They went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

²⁷They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us; and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is its fruit.

²⁸However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.

²⁹Amalek dwells in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.”

³⁰Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.”

³¹But the men who went up with him said, “We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”

³²They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.

³³There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
