¹All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

¹ مردم تمام شب با آواز بلند گریستند

²All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would that we had died in this wilderness!

² و از موسی و هارون شکایت کرده گفتند: «ای کاش در مصر می‌مردیم، یا در همین بیابان از بین می‌رفتیم.

³Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey: wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”

³ خداوند ما را به این سرزمین آورد تا ما را با شمشیر دشمن به قتل برساند و زنان و فرزندان ما اسیر شوند، پس بهتر است که به مصر بازگردیم.»

⁴They said one to another, “Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.”

⁴ به یکدیگر گفتند: «بیایید که برای خود رهبری انتخاب کنیم تا ما را به مصر بازگرداند.»

⁵Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁵ آنگاه موسی و هارون در پیش مردم اسرائیل به خاک افتادند.

⁶Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes:

⁶ یوشع، پسر نون و کالیب، پسر یفنه، جزء آنانی بودند که برای بررسی به سرزمین کنعان رفته بودند، جامهٔ خود را پاره کردند و

⁷and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

⁷ به مردم اسرائیل گفتند: «ما سرزمین کنعان را بررسی کردیم. آنجا سرزمین بسیار حاصلخیزی است.

⁸If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey.

⁸ اگر خداوند از ما خشنود باشد، ما را به آنجا می‌برد و آن سرزمین غنی و حاصلخیز را به ما می‌دهد.

⁹Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.”

⁹ پس شما نباید علیه خداوند شورش کنید و از مردم کنعان بترسید، زیرا شکست دادن آنها برای ما، مثل آب خوردن آسان است. آنها پُشت و پناهی ندارند، امّا خداوند همراه ماست. از ایشان نترسید!»

¹⁰But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. The glory of Yahweh appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.

¹⁰ مردم اسرائیل به عوض اینکه به حرف آنها گوش بدهند، خواستند آنها را سنگسار کنند. ناگهان جلال با شکوه خداوند در خیمهٔ عبادت بر تمام قوم اسرائیل ظاهر شد.

¹¹Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

¹¹ خداوند به موسی فرمود: «تا به کی این قوم به من اهانت می‌کنند؟ با وجود این‌همه نشانه‌هایی که من در میان آنها نشان دادم، باز هم به من ایمان نمی‌آورند.

¹²I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

¹² پس می‌خواهم که آنها را به مرض هولناکی مبتلا و از ارث محروم کنم و از تو قومی که بزرگتر و قویتر از اینها باشد، به وجود آورم.»

¹³Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them;

¹³ امّا موسی به خداوند گفت: «اگر این خبر به گوش مردم مصر برسد چه خواهند گفت؟ تو این قوم را با قدرت خود از دست آن مردم نجات دادی.

¹⁴and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are in the midst of this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁴ مردم مصر از این موضوع به ساکنان سرزمین کنعان خبر خواهند داد. مردم کنعان می‌دانند که تو ای خداوند، با این قوم هستی و خود را در ابری که بالای سر آنهاست، نشان می‌دهی و با ستون ابر و آتش شب و روز آنها را راهنمایی می‌کنی.

¹⁵Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,

¹⁵ حالا اگر تمام این قوم را از بین ببری، آن مردمی که شهرت تو را شنیده‌اند، خواهند گفت:

¹⁶‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’

¹⁶ 'چون خداوند نتوانست این قوم را به این سرزمین که وعدهٔ مالکیّت آن را به آنها داده بود برساند، مجبور شد که آنها را در بیابان از بین ببرد.'

¹⁷Now please let the power of the Lord The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai.” be great, according as you have spoken, saying,

¹⁷ اکنون از درگاه تو تقاضا می‌کنم، قدرت خود را به ما نشان ده و آنچه را قول داده بودی انجام بده، هنگامی‌که فرمودی:

¹⁸‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’

¹⁸ من، خداوند به آسانی خشمگین نمی‌شوم و محبّت من بی‌پایان است و به شما وفادار هستم و گناهان شما را می‌بخشم، امّا گناه را بدون سزا نمی‌گذارم. به‌خاطر گناه پدران، فرزندانشان را تا نسل سوم و چهارم جزا می‌دهم.

¹⁹Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and according as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”

¹⁹ پس از حضور تو التماس می‌کنم که از روی بزرگواری و محبّت بی‌پایانت، گناهان این مردم را ببخشی، چنانچه از همان زمانی که سرزمین مصر را ترک کردند، تاکنون بارها گناهان ایشان را بخشیده‌ای.»

²⁰Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word:

²⁰ آنگاه خداوند فرمود: «چون تو از من خواهش کردی، من آنها را می‌بخشم،

²¹but in very deed, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Yahweh;

²¹ امّا به حیات خود و به حضور پرجلالم که زمین را پُر کرده است، قسم می‌خورم که هیچ‌کدام از آنهایی را که جلال و نشانه‌های مرا در مصر و همچنین در بیابان دیده‌اند و بازهم از من نافرمانی کرده‌اند و مرا مورد آزمایش قرار داده‌اند،

²²because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;

²² آن سرزمینی را که به نیاکانشان وعدهٔ مالکیّت آن را داده‌ام، نخواهند دید.

²³surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it:

²³ ولی بندهٔ من، کالیب با آنها فرق دارد. او همیشه و از صمیم دل، دستورات مرا انجام داده است، بنابراین او را به همان سرزمینی که برای بررسی‌اش رفته بود، می‌برم و نسل او را مالک آن می‌سازم.

²⁴but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his seed shall possess it.

²⁴ حالا که عمالیقیان و کنعانیان در دشتها سکونت دارند، پس بهتر است از راه دریای سرخ به بیابان بازگردید.»

²⁵Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn, and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds .”

²⁵ سپس خداوند به موسی و هارون فرمود:

²⁶Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²⁶ «تا به کی این مردم شریر از من شکایت می‌کنند؟ من بارها شکایت این قوم را شنیده‌ام.

²⁷“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

²⁷ به آنها بگو: 'خداوند به حیات خود قسم می‌خورد که همان بلا را که از آن می‌ترسیدند بر سرتان می‌آورم. من خداوند سخن گفته‌ام

²⁸Tell them, ‘As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you:

²⁸ اجسادتان در این بیابان پوسیده می‌شوند. از تمام اشخاص بیست ساله و بالاتر یک نفر هم زنده نمی‌ماند، چرا که از من شکایت کردید.

²⁹your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

²⁹ به غیراز کالیب، پسر یفنه و یوشع پسر نون، هیچ‌کدام ایشان به آن سرزمینی که به شما وعده دادم، قدم نمی‌گذارد.

³⁰surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

³⁰ همچنین کودکان شما را که گفتید، اسیر ساکنان آن سر زمین می‌شوند، به سلامتی به آن جایی‌که شما آن را رد کردید، می‌رسانم.

³¹But your little ones, that you said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.

³¹ امّا جنازه‌های شما در این بیابان می‌افتند.

³²But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.

³² فرزندان شما به‌خاطر بی‌ایمانی شما برای چهل سال چوپانی می‌کنند تا که آخرین نفر شما در بیابان بمیرد.

³³Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness.

³³ در مقابل هر روزی که نمایندگان شما آن سرزمین را شناسایی کردند، یک سال جزا می‌بینید؛ یعنی مدّت چهل سال در بیابان سرگردان می‌باشید. به این ترتیب جزای نافرمانی خود را می‌بینید تا بدانید ‌که، بی‌اطاعتی از من چه نتیجه‌ای دارد.

³⁴After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.’

³⁴ شما ای قوم شریر، که به مخالفت با من برخاسته‌‌اید، در بیابان می‌میرید. این است گفتار من که خداوند هستم.'»

³⁵I, Yahweh, have spoken, surely this will I do to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.”

³⁵ آن‌ کسانی‌که برای بررسی به کنعان رفته بودند و با شایعات بد، مردم را به وحشت انداخته، آنها را به ضد خداوند تحریک نمودند، در اثر بلایی ‌که خداوند بر سرشان آورد، همه هلاک شدند.

³⁶The men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,

³⁶ از بین آنها تنها یوشع، پسر نون و کالیب، پسر یفنه زنده ماندند.

³⁷even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.

³⁷ موسی آنچه را که خداوند فرموده بود، به اطّلاع مردم رساند و آنها بسیار گریه کردند.

³⁸But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.

³⁸ روز بعد، صبح زود برخاستند و به سر کوه رفتند و گفتند: «ما حاضر و آماده هستیم تا به سرزمینی که خداوند به ما وعده داده برویم. ما به گناه خود اعتراف می‌کنیم.»

³⁹Moses told these words to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.

³⁹ موسی به آنها گفت: «شما با این کار خود، از فرمان خداوند سرپیچی می‌کنید، امّا موفّق نمی‌شوید.

⁴⁰They rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised: for we have sinned.”

⁴⁰ شما نباید به آنجا بروید، زیرا خداوند به شما کمک نخواهد کرد و دشمنانتان، شما را شکست می‌دهند.

⁴¹Moses said, “Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?

⁴¹ وقتی با عمالیقیان و کنعانیان روبه‌رو شوید، با شمشیر آنها به قتل می‌رسید. چون شما از دستور خداوند سرپیچی كرده‌اید و خداوند با شما نخواهد بود.»

⁴²Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that you not be struck down before your enemies.

⁴² امّا آنها به حرف موسی گوش ندادند و با وجودی که صندوق پیمان خداوند و موسی از اردوگاه حرکت نکرده بودند، به طرف کوهستان حرکت کردند. آنگاه عمالیقیان و کنعانیانِ ساکن کوهستان پایین آمدند و آنها را شکست دادند و تا حُرما تعقیب کردند.

⁴³For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned back from following Yahweh, therefore Yahweh will not be with you.”

⁴³ آنگاه عمالیقیان و کنعانیانِ ساکن کوهستان پایین آمدند و آنها را شکست دادند و تا حُرما تعقیب کردند.

⁴⁴But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and Moses, didn’t depart out of the camp.

⁴⁵Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.
