¹The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.

¹ وقتی پادشاه کنعانی سرزمین عراد، واقع در جنوب کنعان، شنید که بنی‌اسرائیل از راه اتاریم می‌آیند، بر آنها حمله کرد و تعدادی از آنها را اسیر کرد.

²Israel vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”

² پس قوم اسرائیل عهد کردند که اگر خداوند به آنها کمک فرماید تا بر این قوم پیروز شوند، تمام شهرهای آنها را بکلّی نابود ‌کنند.

³Yahweh listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

³ خداوند دعای آنها را شنید و کنعانیان را شکست داد و مردم اسرائیل آنها را با شهرهای ایشان نابود کردند، پس آنجا را حُرما، یعنی نابودی نامیدند.

⁴They traveled from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea or, Sea of Reeds , to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

⁴ بعد از آن، قوم اسرائیل از کوه هور حرکت کرد تا از راهی که به دریای سرخ می‌رفت، سرزمین اَدوم را دور بزنند. امّا بنی‌اسرائیل از این سفر طولانی به تنگ آمدند

⁵The people spoke against God, and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loathes this light bread.”

⁵ و از خدا و موسی شکایت کردند و گفتند: «چرا ما را از مصر آوردید تا در این بیابان بمیریم؟ نه چیزی است که بخوریم و نه آب است که بنوشیم. ما از خوردن این خوراک بی‌مزه خسته شده‌ایم.»

⁶Yahweh sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died.

⁶ آنگاه خداوند مارهای سمی را در میان ایشان فرستاد و بسیاری از قوم گزیده شدند و مردند.

⁷The people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against Yahweh, and against you. Pray to Yahweh, that he take away the serpents from us.” Moses prayed for the people.

⁷ مردم اسرائیل نزد موسی آمدند و گفتند: «ما گناه کرده‌ایم، زیرا علیه خداوند و علیه تو شکایت نموده‌ایم. پس به حضور خداوند دعا کن که ما را از شر این مارها نجات بدهد.» پس موسی برای آنها دعا کرد.

⁸Yahweh said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard: and it shall happen, that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”

⁸ خداوند به موسی فرمود: «یک مار برنزی بساز و بر تیری بیاویز. اگر هر مارگزیده‌ای به آن نگاه کند، زنده می‌ماند.»

⁹Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it on the standard: and it happened, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked to the serpent of brass, he lived.

⁹ پس موسی یک مار برنزی ساخت و آن را بر سر تیری آویخت و همین که مار گزیده‌ای، به آن نگاه می‌کرد، شفا می‌یافت.

¹⁰The children of Israel traveled, and encamped in Oboth.

¹⁰ بنی‌اسرائیل به سفر خود ادامه داده، به اوبوت رسیدند و در آنجا اردو زدند.

¹¹They traveled from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrise.

¹¹ از آنجا به عیی‌عبارم که در بیابان، در شرق موآب واقع بود، رفتند.

¹²From there they traveled, and encamped in the valley of Zered.

¹² سپس به وادی زارّد آمدند و در آنجا اردو زدند.

¹³From there they traveled, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that comes out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

¹³ بعد به طرف شمال وادی ارنون، در نزدیکی مرز اموریان کوچ کردند. (وادی ارنون خط مرزی بین موآبیان و اموریان است.)

¹⁴Therefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Yahweh, “Vaheb in Suphah, the valleys of the Arnon,

¹⁴ در کتاب «جنگهای خداوند» در این زمینه اشاره شده است که: «...شهر واهیب در سوفه، وادیها؛ رود ارنون،

¹⁵the slope of the valleys that incline toward the dwelling of Ar, leans on the border of Moab.”

¹⁵ رودخانه‌ها و وادیهایی که به شهر عار در امتداد مرز موآب قرار دارند، سرازیر می‌شوند.»

¹⁶From there they traveled to Beer: that is the well of which Yahweh said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”

¹⁶ سپس بنی‌اسرائیل سفر خود را به طرف بئر، یعنی چاه ادامه دادند. این همان‌جایی ‌است که خداوند به موسی فرمود: «قوم اسرائیل را جمع کن و من به آنها آب می‌دهم.»

¹⁷Then sang Israel this song: “Spring up, well; sing to it:

¹⁷ آنگاه بنی‌اسرائیل این سرود را خواندند: «ای چاه فوران کن! برایش سرود بخوانید!

¹⁸the well, which the princes dug, which the nobles of the people dug, with the scepter, and with their poles.” From the wilderness they traveled to Mattanah;

¹⁸ این چاهی است که شاهزادگان کندند. با عصای سلطنت و با عصای رهبران کنده شد.» قوم اسرائیل از بیابان به متانه حرکت کردند

¹⁹and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

¹⁹ و از آنجا، به نحلیئیل و بعد به باموت رفتند.

²⁰and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks down on the desert.

²⁰ و از باموت به درّه‌ای در منطقهٔ موآبیان در کوهپایهٔ کوه فسجه که مشرف بر بیابان است، رفتند.

²¹Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

²¹ قوم اسرائیل، نمایندگان خود را نزد سیحون، پادشاه اموریان فرستادند که این پیام را به او برسانند:

²²“Let me pass through your land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s highway, until we have passed your border.”

²² «به ما اجازه بدهید که از سرزمین شما عبور کنیم. ما قول می‌دهیم که فقط از شاهراه برویم، به باغهای انگورتان داخل نشویم و تا زمانی که در خاک شما باشیم، حتّی از آب شما هم ننوشیم.»

²³Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.

²³ امّا سیحون به آنها اجازه نداد که از خاک او عبور کنند. در عوض ارتش خود را جمع کرد و به مقابلهٔ اسرائیل به بیابان رفت و در ناحیهٔ یاهص، با آنها جنگید.

²⁴Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

²⁴ مردم اسرائیل بر آنها غالب شدند، سیحون را کشتند و سرزمین‌شان را از وادی ارنون تا وادی یبوق و تا مرز عمونیان تصرّف کردند. امّا نتوانستند جلوتر بروند، زیرا مرز عمونیان به خوبی محافظت می‌شد.

²⁵Israel took all these cities: and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its towns.

²⁵ بنی‌اسرائیل، همهٔ شهرهای اموریان را همراه با شهر حشبون و شهرهای اطراف آن را تصرّف کردند و در آن ساکن شدند.

²⁶For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to the Arnon.

²⁶ حشبون پایتخت اموریان بود که سیحون قبلاً در جنگ با پادشاه سابق موآب آن را با تمام سرزمین آنها تا وادی ارنون تصرّف کرده بود.

²⁷Therefore those who speak in proverbs say, “Come to Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be built and established;

²⁷ شاعران دربارهٔ حشبون چنین گفته‌‌اند: «به حشبون بیایید و آن را آباد کنید، پایتخت سیحون را بنا نمایید،

²⁸for a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon. It has devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

²⁸ زیرا آتشی از حشبون برخاست و شهر عار در موآب را ویران کرد و بلندیهای ارنون را بلعید.

²⁹Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, people of Chemosh! He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to Sihon king of the Amorites.

²⁹ وای بر تو ای موآب! ای قوم کموش هلاک شدید. پسرانش را فراری و دخترانش را به دست سیحون، پادشاه اموری اسیر ساخت.

³⁰We have shot at them. Heshbon has perished even to Dibon. We have laid waste even to Nophah, Which reaches to Medeba.”

³⁰ سعادت و کامرانی ایشان از حشبون تا به دیبون نابود گشت و ما آنها را تا نوفح که نزدیک میدباست از بین بردیم.»

³¹Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

³¹ به این ترتیب قوم اسرائیل در سرزمین اموریان ساکن شدند.

³²Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took its towns, and drove out the Amorites who were there.

³² موسی چند نفر را به یعزیر فرستاد تا وضع آنجا را بررسی کنند. بعد قوم اسرائیل به آنجا حمله بردند و آن شهر را با روستاهای اطراف آن گرفتند و ساکنان آنجا را بیرون راندند.

³³They turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

³³ سپس بازگشتند و به طرف باشان رفتند. امّا عوج پادشاه باشان، با ارتش خود به مقابلهٔ آنها به ادرعی آمد.

³⁴Yahweh said to Moses, “Don’t fear him: for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”

³⁴ خداوند به موسی فرمود: «از عوج نترس؛ زیرا من او را با مردم و سرزمین ایشان به دست تو تسلیم کرده‌ام و تو همان کاری را که با سیحون، پادشاه اموری در حشبون کردی، با او هم بکن.» پس بنی‌اسرائیل، عوج را با پسران و ساکنان آنجا به قتل رساندند و احدی را زنده نگذاشتند و سرزمین ایشان را متصرّف شدند.

³⁵So they struck him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.

³⁵ پس بنی‌اسرائیل، عوج را با پسران و ساکنان آنجا به قتل رساندند و احدی را زنده نگذاشتند و سرزمین ایشان را متصرّف شدند.
