¹The children of Israel traveled, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.

¹ بعد از آن، قوم اسرائیل به سمت دشت موآب حرکت کردند و در شرق رود اردن، مقابل شهر اریحا اردو زدند.

²Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

² چون بالاق، پسر صفور پادشاه موآب خبر شد که تعداد بنی‌اسرائیل بسیار زیاد است و چه بلایی را بر سر اموریان آوردند،

³Moab was very afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

³ او و موآبیان بسیار ترسیدند.

⁴Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this multitude will lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

⁴ موآبیان به رهبران مدیان پیام فرستاده گفتند: «این گروه بزرگ، مثل گاوی که سبزه را می‌جَود، ما را خواهد خورد.»

⁵He sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, there is a people who came out from Egypt. Behold, they cover the surface of the earth, and they are staying opposite me.

⁵ پس بالاق، پادشاه موآب پیامی به بلعام، پسر بعور در فتور که در کنار رود فرات در سرزمین آماو واقع است، فرستاده گفت: «گروه بزرگی از سرزمین مصر آمده‌اند و در همه‌جا پراکنده شده و در نزدیکی ما جا گرفته‌اند.

⁶Please come now therefore curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: perhaps I shall prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”

⁶ حالا ما از تو خواهش می‌کنیم که بیایی و این قوم را لعنت کنی، زیرا آنها از ما قویتر هستند. شاید به این ترتیب، من بتوانم آنها را شکست بدهم و از این سرزمین بیرون برانم. ما می‌دانیم کسی را که تو برکت بدهی، برکت می‌بیند و هرکسی را که نفرین کنی، نفرین می‌شود.»

⁷The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak.

⁷ رهبران موآب و مدیان با مبلغی پول به عنوان مزد نفرین، نزد بلعام رفتند و پیام بالاق را به او رساندند.

⁸He said to them, “Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Yahweh shall speak to me.” The princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.

⁸ بلعام به آنها گفت: «امشب همین جا بمانید و فردا آنچه را که خداوند به من بفرماید، به شما می‌گویم.» پس رهبران موآب شب را با بلعام به سر بردند.

⁹God came to Balaam, and said, “Who are these men with you?”

⁹ همان شب خدا نزد بلعام آمد و فرمود: «این مردان کیستند؟»

¹⁰Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has said to me,

¹⁰ بلعام جواب داد: «اینها نمایندگان بالاق، پادشاه موآب هستند. او آنها را فرستاده است و می‌گوید،

¹¹‘Behold, the people that has come out of Egypt, it covers the surface of the earth: now, come curse me them; perhaps I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.’”

¹¹ که یک گروه عظیم مردم از مصر آمده و در همه‌جا پراکنده شده‌اند و از من خواهش کرده است که بروم و آنها را نفرین کنم تا او بتواند با آنها بجنگد و آنها را از آنجا براند.»

¹²God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people; for they are blessed.”

¹² خدا به او فرمود: «تو نباید با آنها بروی و آن قوم را نفرین کنی، زیرا من آنها را برکت داده‌ام.»

¹³Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, “Go to your land; for Yahweh refuses to permit me to go with you.”

¹³ پس بلعام، فردای آن روز صبح برخاسته، پیش فرستادگان بالاق رفت و به آنها گفت: «به وطن خود بازگردید، زیرا که خداوند اجازه نداد که با شما بروم.»

¹⁴The princes of Moab rose up, and they went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”

¹⁴ نمایندگان بالاق دوباره به وطن خود بازگشتند و به او گفتند: «بلعام از آمدن خودداری می‌کند.»

¹⁵Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.

¹⁵ سپس بالاق بار دیگر گروه مهمتر و بزرگتری را فرستاد.

¹⁶They came to Balaam, and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor, ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me:

¹⁶ آنها به بلعام گفتند: «بالاق از تو استدعا می‌کند که بیایی.

¹⁷for I will promote you to very great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do. Please come therefore, and curse this people for me.’”

¹⁷ او از تو با احترام پذیرایی می‌کند و هر امری که تو بفرمایی، بجا می‌آورد. لطفاً بیا و این قوم را نفرین کن.»

¹⁸Balaam answered the servants of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can’t go beyond the word of Yahweh my God, to do less or more.

¹⁸ بلعام به آنها گفت: «اگر بالاق، کاخ خود را پر از طلا و نقره کند و به من ببخشد، از امر خداوند خدای خود به هیچ‌وجه سرپیچی نمی‌کنم.

¹⁹Now therefore, please wait also here this night, that I may know what Yahweh will speak to me more.”

¹⁹ به هرحال، بازهم امشب را اینجا بمانید تا بدانم که خداوند به من چه خواهد گفت.»

²⁰God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak to you, that you shall do.”

²⁰ خدا همان شب به بلعام گفت: «حالا که این مردان دوباره آمده‌اند، برخیز و با آنها برو، امّا فقط آنچه را که من به تو می‌گویم، انجام بده.»

²¹Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.

²¹ پس بلعام صبح برخاست. الاغ خود را پالان کرد و با رهبران بالاق به راه افتاد.

²²God’s anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Yahweh placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

²² امّا خداوند از رفتن بلعام خشمگین شد و فرشتهٔ خود را سر راه او فرستاد و راه را بر او بست. بلعام در‌حالی‌که بر الاغ خود سوار بود، دو نوکرش همراه او می‌رفتند.

²³The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the way.

²³ الاغ بلعام، فرشتهٔ خداوند را دید که شمشیری در دست دارد و سر راه ایستاده است. آنگاه الاغ از جاده رم کرد و به مزرعه‌ای رفت. بلعام الاغ را زد و آن را دوباره به جاده بازگرداند.

²⁴Then the angel of Yahweh stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

²⁴ بعد فرشتهٔ خدا در جایی‌که جاده تنگ می‌شد و در دو طرف آن دیوارهای سنگی دو باغ انگور قرار داشتند، ایستاد.

²⁵The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she thrust herself to the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he struck her again.

²⁵ چون الاغ دید که فرشتهٔ خداوند آنجا ایستاده است، خود را به دیوار چسباند و پای بلعام را به آن فشرد. بلعام دوباره الاغ را زد.

²⁶The angel of Yahweh went further, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

²⁶ آن وقت فرشته پیش رفت و در جای تنگتری ایستاد که الاغ به هیچ وجه نمی‌توانست از آنجا عبور کند.

²⁷The donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she lay down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff.

²⁷ الاغ در بین جاده خوابید و بلعام خشمگین شد و با چوب دست خود، الاغ را زد.

²⁸Yahweh opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

²⁸ آنگاه خداوند، الاغ را بزبان آورد و به بلعام گفت: «گناه من چیست که مرا سه بار زدی؟»

²⁹Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me, I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would have killed you.”

²⁹ بلعام جواب داد: «تو مرا مسخره کردی. ای کاش یک شمشیر داشتم و تو را در همین جا می‌کشتم.»

³⁰The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Was I ever in the habit of doing so to you?” He said, “No.”

³⁰ الاغ به بلعام گفت: «آیا من همان الاغی نیستم که تمام عمر بر آن سوار شده‌ای؟ آیا هرگز چنین کاری کرده‌ام؟» بلعام جواب داد: «نه!»

³¹Then Yahweh opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.

³¹ آن وقت خداوند چشمان بلعام را باز کرد و بلعام فرشتهٔ خداوند را دید که شمشیر به دست، سر راه ایستاده است و وی پیش او به خاک افتاد.

³²The angel of Yahweh said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come forth as an adversary, because your way is perverse before me:

³² فرشته به او گفت: «چرا الاغت را سه مرتبه زدی؟ من آمده‌‌ام تا تو را از رفتن باز دارم، زیرا این سفر تو از روی بی‌اطاعتی است.

³³and the donkey saw me, and turned aside before me these three times. Unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I would have killed you, and saved her alive.”

³³ این الاغ سه مرتبه مرا دید و از سر راه من دور شد. اگر این الاغ این کار را نمی‌کرد تو را می‌کشتم و این الاغ را زنده می‌گذاشتم.»

³⁴Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, “I have sinned; for I didn’t know that you stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases you, I will go back again.”

³⁴ بلعام به فرشته گفت: «من گناه کرده‌ام. من متوجّه نشدم که در سر راه ایستاده بودی. حالا اگر با رفتن من موافق نیستی، من به خانهٔ خود برمی‌گردم.»

³⁵The angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, “Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

³⁵ فرشتهٔ خداوند به او فرمود: «با این مردان برو، امّا فقط هرچه را که من به تو می‌گویم، بگو.» پس بلعام با فرستادگان بالاق حرکت کرد.

³⁶When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him to the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.

³⁶ چون بالاق خبر شد که بلعام می‌آید، به استقبال او به شهر موآب، در کنار وادی ارنون، واقع در مرز موآب رفت.

³⁷Balak said to Balaam, “Didn’t I earnestly send to you to call you? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I not able indeed to promote you to honor?”

³⁷ بالاق از بلعام پرسید: «چرا بار اول که قاصدانم را فرستادم نیامدی؟ آیا فکر می‌کردی که من به تو پاداش شایسته‌‌ای نخواهم داد؟»

³⁸Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you: have I now any power at all to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that shall I speak.”

³⁸ بلعام جواب داد: «من اکنون آمده‌ام، امّا قدرتی ندارم. من فقط کلامی را که خداوند در دهان من بگذارد، به زبان می‌آورم.»

³⁹Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath Huzoth.

³⁹ پس بلعام، همراه بالاق به شهر حصوت رفت.

⁴⁰Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes who were with him.

⁴⁰ در آنجا بالاق گاو و گوسفند قربانی کرد و گوشت آنها را برای بلعام و رهبرانی که با او بودند، فرستاد. بامدادان بالاق بلعام را به سر کوه بَموت بعل برد تا از آنجا عدّه‌ای از قوم اسرائیل را ببیند.

⁴¹It happened in the morning, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal; and he saw from there the utmost part of the people.

⁴¹ بامدادان بالاق بلعام را به سر کوه بَموت بعل برد تا از آنجا عدّه‌ای از قوم اسرائیل را ببیند.
