1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that behold, the place was a place for livestock;

طایفههای رئوبین و جاد که دارای گلّههای زیادی بودند، چون دیدند که سرزمین یعزیر و جلعاد برای نگهداری گلّههای ایشان جای مناسبی است،
2the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,

بنابراین پیش موسی، العازار کاهن و رهبران رفته، عرض کردند:
3“Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
3
«این سرزمینی که شامل شهرهای عطاروت، دیبون، یعزیر، نِمره، حشبون، الِعاله، شبام، نِبو و بعون است و قوم اسرائیل به کمک خداوند آن را متصرّف شده، جای خوبی برای گلّههای ماست.
4the land which Yahweh struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock; and your servants have livestock.”

بنابراین از شما خواهش میکنیم، به جای سهم ما در آن طرف رود اردن، این سرزمینها را به ما بدهید.»
5They said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; don’t bring us over the Jordan.”

موسی به آنها گفت: «آیا شما میخواهید که در همین جا بمانید و سایر برادرانتان به جنگ بروند؟
6Moses said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war, and shall you sit here?

به چه جرأت میخواهید قوم اسرائیل را از رفتن به سرزمین آن سوی رود اردن، که خداوند آن را به آنها داده است، دلسرد بسازید؟
7Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which Yahweh has given them?
7
پدران شما نیز هنگامیکه آنها را از قادش برنیع فرستادم تا آن سرزمین را بررسی کنند، همین کار را کردند.
8Your fathers did so when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
8
امّا وقتی به وادی اشکول رسیدند و آن سرزمین را دیدند، دوباره برگشتند و قوم اسرائیل را از رفتن به آنجا دلسرد ساختند.
9For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which Yahweh had given them.

در آن روز خشم خداوند افروخته شد و سوگند یاد کرد که همهٔ کسانیکه از مصر خارج شدند و بیست ساله و مسنتر هستند، هیچیک به سرزمینی که وعدهٔ آن را به ابراهیم، اسحاق و یعقوب داده بود، وارد نخواهند شد، زیرا آنها خداوند را از دل و جان پیروی نکردند.
10Yahweh’s anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying,

از آن جمله، تنها کالیب، پسر یفنه و یوشع، پسر نون بودند که به خداوند وفادار ماندند.
11‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

پس خشم خداوند بر قوم اسرائیل برافروخته شد و آنها را مدّت چهل سال در بیابان سرگردان ساخت تا اینکه همهٔ آنهایی که در مقابل خداوند گناه کرده بودند، هلاک شدند.
12except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed Yahweh completely.’

حالا شما نسل گناهکار، جای نیاکان خود را گرفتهاید و میخواهید که شدّت خشم خداوند را بر سر قوم بیاورید.
13Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil in the sight of Yahweh, was consumed.

اگر شما باز هم از امر خداوند پیروی نکنید، او دوباره این قوم را در بیابان ترک میکند، آنگاه خود شما مسئول تباهی آنها خواهید بود.»
14“Behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.

پس آنها گفتند: «ابتدا به ما اجازه بدهید که در اینجا برای گلّههای خود طویله و برای اطفال خود شهرها بسازیم،
15For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all this people.”

آنگاه ما مسلّح میشویم و پیشاپیش برادران خود به آن سوی رود اردن میرویم تا آنها را به مقصد برسانیم. امّا خانوادهٔ ما باید در شهرهای مستحکمی که خواهیم ساخت، بمانند تا از خطر دشمن در امان باشند.
16They came near to him, and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones:

تا تمام قوم اسرائیل زمین خود را به دست نیاورند، ما باز نخواهیم گشت.
17but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
17
ما در آن سوی رود اردن، زمین نمیخواهیم، زیرا ما سهم خود را در اینجا، یعنی شرق رود اردن گرفتهایم.»
18We will not return to our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
18
موسی گفت: «اگر به راستی میخواهید این کار را بکنید، پس در حضور خداوند برای جنگ آماده شوید.
19For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan, and forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.”

تمام مردان جنگی شما از رود اردن عبور کنند تا که خداوند همهٔ دشمنان را پراکنده سازد.
20Moses said to them, “If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before Yahweh to the war,

بعد از آن که آن سرزمین را در حضور خداوند متصرّف شدید، میتوانید بازگردید، زیرا وظیفهٔ خود را در مقابل خداوند و قوم اسرائیل انجام دادهاید و آن وقت زمینهای شرق رود اردن را، از جانب خداوند مالک میشوید.
21and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven out his enemies from before him,
21
امّا اگر به وعدهٔ خود وفا نکنید، در برابر خداوند گناهکار شمرده میشوید و بهخاطر گناه خود، جزا میبینید.
22and the land is subdued before Yahweh; then afterward you shall return, and be guiltless towards Yahweh, and towards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before Yahweh.

حالا بروید و برای کودکان خود، شهرها و برای گلّههای خود، طویله بسازید، امّا به آنچه که گفتید باید عمل کنید.»
23“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out.

مردم جاد و رئوبین به موسی گفتند: «ما از امر تو پیروی میکنیم.
24Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth.”
24
کودکان، زنان، رمه و گلّه ما در شهرهای جلعاد میمانند.
25The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.
25
ما همه آماده هستیم تا در زیر فرمان خداوند به جنگ برویم، ما از رود اردن خواهیم گذشت و خواهیم جنگید، همانطور که تو دستور دادی.»
26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock, shall be there in the cities of Gilead;
26
سپس موسی به العازار کاهن، یوشع پسر نون و رهبران طایفههای اسرائیل دستور داده گفت:
27but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before Yahweh to battle, as my lord says.”
27
«اگر مردان طایفههای جاد و رئوبین آماده شدند و همراه شما به آن طرف رود اردن برای خداوند به جنگ رفتند، آن وقت پس از آن که آن سرزمین را تصرّف کردند، باید سرزمین جلعاد را به آنها بدهید.
28So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the children of Israel.

امّا اگر با شما نرفتند، در آن صورت از سرزمین کنعان سهمی به آنها داده شود.»
29Moses said to them, “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle, before Yahweh, and the land shall be subdued before you; then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:

مردان طایفههای جاد و رئوبین گفتند: «ما از امر خداوند پیروی میکنیم.
30but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”
30
به فرمان او ما از رود اردن خواهیم گذشت و به سرزمین کنعان داخل میشویم و میجنگیم، امّا زمینهای این طرف رود اردن باید به ما تعلّق بگیرد.»
31The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, “As Yahweh has said to your servants, so will we do.

موسی تمامی سرزمینهای سیحون، پادشاه اموریها و عوج پادشاه باشان و همهٔ شهرها و حومهٔ آنها را برای طایفههای جاد و رئوبین و نصف طایفهٔ منسی پسر یوسف تعیین کرد.
32We will pass over armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”

مردان طایفهٔ جاد شهرهای دیبون، عطاروت، عروعیر، عطروت شوفان، یعزیر، یُجبهه، بیت نمره و بیت هاران را آباد کردند. همهٔ این شهرها دارای دیوار و طویله برای گوسفندها بودند.
33Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land.

مردم طایفهٔ رئوبین شهرهای حشبون، الیعاله، قیریتایم، نِبو و بعل معون (اسرائیلیها نام این شهرها را که تصرف کرده بودند، عوض کردند) و سبمه را ساختند.
34The children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
34
خاندان ماخیر، از طایفهٔ منسی به جلعاد رفتند و آن شهر را متصرّف شدند و ساکنان آن را که اموریان بودند از آنجا بیرون راندند.
35and Atrothshophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,
35
پس موسی شهر جلعاد را به خاندان ماخیر داد و آنها در آنجا سکونت اختیار کردند.
36and Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities, and folds for sheep.
36
یائیر که از طایفهٔ منسی بود روستاهای اطراف جلعاد را اشغال کرد و آن ناحیه را حووتیائیر نامید.
شخص دیگری به نام نوبح به شهر قنات حمله کرد و آنجا را متصرّف شد و آن را به نام خود، یعنی نوبح نامید.
37The children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,

شخص دیگری به نام نوبح به شهر قنات حمله کرد و آنجا را متصرّف شد و آن را به نام خود، یعنی نوبح نامید.
38and Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah: and they gave other names to the cities which they built.
39The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.
40Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he lived therein.
41Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth Jair.
42Nobah went and took Kenath, and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
