¹Or don’t you know, brothers The word for “brothers” here and where context allows may also be correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.” (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man for as long as he lives?

¹ ای دوستان من، شما از قوانین اطّلاع دارید و می‌دانید كه انسان فقط تا زمانی‌که زنده است، ملزم به اطاعت از قانون است.

²For the woman that has a husband is bound by law to the husband while he lives, but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law of the husband.

² مثلاً یک زن شوهردار، تا وقتی‌که شوهرش زنده است، قانوناً به او تعلّق دارد، امّا اگر شوهر او بمیرد، دیگر آن زن از قانونی كه او را به شوهرش مقیّد می‌ساخت، آزاد است.

³So then if, while the husband lives, she is joined to another man, she would be called an adulteress. But if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she is joined to another man.

³ از این جهت اگر آن زن در زمان حیات شوهرش با مرد دیگری زندگی كند، زناكار خوانده خواهد شد. امّا اگر شوهرش بمیرد، دیگر این قانون شامل حال او نیست و چنانچه با مرد دیگری ازدواج كند، مرتكب زنا نمی‌شود.

⁴Therefore, my brothers, you also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you would be joined to another, to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit to God.

⁴ ای دوستان من، شما نیز در همین وضع هستید. شما چون جزئی از بدن مسیح هستید، نسبت به شریعت مرده‌اید و اكنون به آن کسی‌که پس از مرگ زنده شد تعلّق دارید تا در نتیجه برای خدا ثمری بیاوریم.

⁵For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law, worked in our members to bring forth fruit to death.

⁵ زیرا هنگامی‌که ما گرفتار طبیعت نفسانی بودیم، شهوات گناه كه به وسیلهٔ شریعت برانگیخته شده بود در وجود ما كار می‌کرد و موجب مرگ ما می‌شد.

⁶But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that in which we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.

⁶ امّا اكنون از قید شریعت آزاد شده‌ایم زیرا نسبت به آنچه كه ما را در بردگی نگاه می‌‌داشت، مرده‌‌ایم تا به طور تازه‌ای یعنی به وسیلهٔ روح‌القدس خدا را خدمت كنیم، نه مانند گذشته كه از قوانین نوشته شده اطاعت می‌کردیم.

⁷What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin, except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting, unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21

⁷ پس چه بگوییم؟ آیا شریعت گناهكار است؟ به هیچ وجه! اگر شریعت نبود من گناه را نمی‌شناختم. مثلاً اگر شریعت نگفته بود: «طمع نكن»، من هرگز نمی‌‌دانستم طمع‌كردن چیست.

⁸But sin, finding occasion through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of coveting. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

⁸ گناه با استفاده از این قانون هر نوع طمع‌كاری را در زندگی من پدید آورد. زیرا گناه بدون شریعت مثل جسد بی‌جان است.

⁹I was alive apart from the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

⁹ خود من زمانی بی‌خبر از شریعت زنده بودم، امّا همین‌که این حكم شریعت آمد، گناه جان تازه‌‌ای گرفت

¹⁰The commandment, which was for life, this I found to be for death;

¹⁰ و من مُردم و شریعت كه قرار بود به حیات منجر شود، در مورد من، مرگ به بار آورد.

¹¹for sin, finding occasion through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.

¹¹ زیرا گناه با استفاده از آن حكم شریعت مرا فریب داده، كُشت.

¹²Therefore the law indeed is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.

¹² بنابراین شریعت به خودی خود مقدّس است و تمام احكام آن مقدّس و عادلانه و نیكوست.

¹³Did then that which is good become death to me? May it never be! But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.

¹³ آیا مقصود این است كه چیزی نیكو موجب مرگ من شد؟ به ‌هیچ‌وجه! گناه این كار را كرد تا ماهیّت واقعی آن آشكار شود. گناه با استفاده از یک چیز نیكو موجب مرگ من شد تا به وسیلهٔ این حكم شریعت، پستی و شرارت بی‌حد گناه معلوم گردد.

¹⁴For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, sold under sin.

¹⁴ ما می‌دانیم كه شریعت روحانی است؛ امّا من نفسانی هستم و مانند برده‌‌ای به گناه فروخته شده‌‌ام.

¹⁵For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.

¹⁵ نمی‌دانم چه‌کار می‌کنم؛ زیرا آنچه را كه دلم می‌خواهد انجام نمی‌دهم، بلكه برخلاف، چیزی را كه از آن تنفّر دارم به عمل می‌آورم.

¹⁶But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good.

¹⁶ وقتی كاری می‌کنم كه نمی‌‌‌‌‌خواهم بكنم، این نشان می‌دهد كه من با حقانیّت شریعت موافقم.

¹⁷So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

¹⁷ پس در واقع من آن کسی‌که این کار را انجام می‌دهد نیستم؛ بلكه این گناه است كه در من به سر می‌برد.

¹⁸For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good.

¹⁸ می‌دانم كه در من یعنی در طبیعت نفسانی من جایی برای نیكویی نیست، زیرا اگرچه میل به نیكی كردن در من هست ولی قدرت انجام آن را ندارم.

¹⁹For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

¹⁹ آن نیكی‌ای را كه می‌خواهم، انجام نمی‌دهم، بلكه كار بدی را كه نمی‌‌‌‌‌خواهم، به عمل می‌آورم.

²⁰But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me.

²⁰ اگر كاری را كه نمی‌‌‌‌‌خواهم، ‌انجام می‌دهم، دیگر كنندهٔ آن كار من نیستم، بلكه گناه است كه در من به سر می‌برد.

²¹I find then the law, that, to me, while I desire to do good, evil is present.

²¹ پس به این قاعدهٔ كلّی پی می‌برم كه: هروقت می‌خواهم كاری نیكو انجام دهم، فقط شرارت از من سر می‌‌زند.

²²For I delight in God’s law after the inward man,

²² باطناً از شریعت خدا لذّت می‌برم،

²³but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.

²³ ولی می‌بینم فرمان دیگری بر بدن من حاكم است كه با فرمان حاكم بر ذهن من می‌جنگند و مرا اسیر فرمان گناه می‌سازد، یعنی اعضای بدن مرا مطیع خود نموده است.

²⁴What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death?

²⁴ من چه آدم بدبختی هستم! این بدن، مرا به سوی مرگ می‌کشاند. چه كسی می‌تواند مرا از دست آن آزاد سازد؟ خدا را شکر می‌کنم که به وسیلهٔ خداوند ما عیسی مسیح چنین كاری را كرده است. خلاصه درحالی‌که طبیعت نفسانی من بندهٔ گناه است، با عقل خود شریعت خدا را بندگی می‌کنم.

²⁵I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, the sin’s law.

²⁵ خدا را شکر می‌کنم که به وسیلهٔ خداوند ما عیسی مسیح چنین كاری را كرده است. خلاصه درحالی‌که طبیعت نفسانی من بندهٔ گناه است، با عقل خود شریعت خدا را بندگی می‌کنم.
