¹Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

¹Saraj pa, žena Abramova, mu ni rodila; a imela je deklo egiptovsko, po imenu Agara.

²Sarai said to Abram, “See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my handmaid. It may be that I will obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

²Reče torej Saraj Abramu: Glej sedaj, GOSPOD me je zaprl, da ne rodim; pojdi, prosim, k dekli moji, morda dobim otrok iz nje. In Abram je slušal Saraje glas.

³Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.

³In Saraj, žena Abramova, vzame Agaro, egiptovsko deklo svojo, ko je bilo minilo deset let, odkar je Abram bival v deželi Kanaanski, in jo da Abramu, možu svojemu, za ženo.

⁴He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

⁴In Abram je šel k Agari, in spočela je; in ko je videla, da je spočela, je štela gospodinjo svojo spričo sebe za malo.

⁵Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my handmaid into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Yahweh judge between me and you.”

⁵Zatorej reče Saraj Abramu: Krivica, meni storjena, pada nate: jaz sem dejala deklo svojo v naročje tvoje; ko je pa videla, da je spočela, me je štela spričo sebe za malo. GOSPOD naj sodi med menoj in teboj!

⁶But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes.” Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.

⁶Abram pa reče Saraji: Glej, dekla tvoja je v roki tvoji, stóri ji, kar se ti zdi dobro. Torej jo je poniževala Saraj, in ona je pobegnila izpred obličja njenega.

⁷The angel of Yahweh found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

⁷A najde jo angel GOSPODOV pri studencu v puščavi, pri tistem studencu, ki je na potu v Sur;

⁸He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s handmaid, where did you come from? Where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.”

⁸ter reče: Agara, dekla Sarajina, odkod si prišla in kam greš? In odgovori: Izpred obličja Saraje, gospodinje svoje, bežim.

⁹The angel of Yahweh said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”

⁹In angel GOSPODOV ji veli: Vrni se h gospodinji svoji in ponižaj se pod njeno roko.

¹⁰The angel of Yahweh said to her, “I will greatly multiply your seed, that they will not be numbered for multitude.”

¹⁰In reče ji angel GOSPODOV: Silno pomnožim seme tvoje, da ga ne bode moči šteti od množine.

¹¹The angel of Yahweh said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.

¹¹In še ji reče angel GOSPODOV: Glej, ti si noseča, in rodila boš sina; imenuj ga pa Izmaela [T. j. Bog sliši.], zato ker je GOSPOD zaslišal stisko tvojo.

¹²He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. He will live opposite all of his brothers.”

¹²On bode človek divjak, roka njegova bo zoper vse in vseh roke zoper njega, in nasproti vsem bratom svojim bo prebival.

¹³She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”

¹³Tedaj imenuje Agara ime GOSPODA, ki je ž njo govoril: Ti si Bog mogočni, ki vidiš; dejala je namreč: Tukaj sem res gledala odzadaj njega, ki me je videl.

¹⁴Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Beer Lahai Roi means “well of the one who lives and sees me.” Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

¹⁴Zato se imenuje tisti vodnjak Ber-lahaj-roj [T. j. vodnjak Živega, ki me vidi.], in je med Kadesom in Beredom.

¹⁵Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

¹⁵Rodila je torej Agara Abramu sina; in Abram je imenoval sina svojega, ki ga je Agara rodila, Izmaela.Imel je pa Abram šestinosemdeset let, ko mu je Agara rodila Izmaela.

¹⁶Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
