¹My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

³Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

³Dünkt es dich gut, das Werk deiner Hände zu unterdrücken und zu verwerfen, während du über den Rat der Gottlosen dein Licht leuchten lässest?

⁴Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?

⁴Hast du Fleischesaugen, oder siehst du, wie ein Sterblicher sieht?

⁵Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man's days,

⁵Sind denn deine Tage wie Menschentage, deine Jahre den Jahren eines Mannes gleich,

⁶That thou enquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?

⁶daß du nach meiner Schuld forschest und nach meiner Sünde fragst,

⁷Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.

⁷da du doch weißt, daß ich unschuldig bin und mich niemand aus deiner Hand erretten kann?

⁸Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

⁸Deine Hände haben mich gebildet und gemacht ganz und gar, und du wolltest mich nun vernichten?

⁹Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

⁹Gedenke doch, daß du mich wie Ton gebildet hast; willst du mich wieder in Staub verwandeln?

¹⁰Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?

¹⁰Hast du mich nicht wie Milch hingegossen und wie Käse mich gerinnen lassen?

¹¹Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

¹¹Mit Haut und Fleisch hast du mich bekleidet, mit Gebeinen und Sehnen mich durchwoben.

¹²Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

¹²Leben und Gnade hast du mir geschenkt, und deine Obhut bewahrte meinen Geist.

¹³And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.

¹³Und doch hegst du solches in deinem Herzen; ich weiß, daß es bei dir so beschlossen ist, daß,

¹⁴If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.

¹⁴wenn ich sündigte, du darauf achten und mich nicht lossprechen würdest von meiner Missetat!

¹⁵If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;

¹⁵Habe ich Übles getan, dann wehe mir! Und bin ich im Recht, so darf ich mein schmachbedecktes Haupt doch nicht erheben, sondern muß mich satt sehen an meinem Elend!

¹⁶For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.

¹⁶Wagt es aber, sich zu erheben, so verfolgst du mich wie ein Löwe und handelst noch unbegreiflicher mit mir;

¹⁷Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

¹⁷du stellst neue Zeugen wider mich auf, mehrst deinen Zorn gegen mich, bietest stets frische Scharen, ja ein Heer wider mich auf!

¹⁸Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!

¹⁸Warum hast du mich aus dem Mutterleibe hervorgebracht? Wäre ich doch umgekommen, ohne daß mich ein Auge gesehen hätte!

¹⁹I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

¹⁹So würde ich sein, als wäre ich niemals gewesen, vom Mutterleibe weg ins Grab gelegt.

²⁰Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

²⁰Ist meine Lebenszeit nicht kurz genug? Er stehe doch ab, lasse ab von mir, daß ich mich ein wenig erhole,

²¹Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

²¹ehe ich dahinfahre auf Nimmerwiederkehren ins Land der Finsternis und des Todesschattens,

²²A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

²²an den dunkeln Ort, wo Finsternis und keine Ordnung herrscht, und wo der Tag nicht heller ist als die Nacht!
