¹Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

¹Da antwortete Zophar, der Naamatiter, und sprach:

²Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

²Soll die Menge der Worte unbeantwortet bleiben und der beredte Mann recht behalten?

³Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

³Darfst du mit deinem Geschwätz andern das Maul stopfen und spotten, ohne daß man es dir verweist?

⁴For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.

⁴Und darfst du sagen: Meine Lehre ist lauter, und ich bin vor Deinen Augen rein?

⁵But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;

⁵O daß doch Gott reden möchte und seinen Mund auftäte gegen dich!

⁶And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

⁶Und daß er dir kundtäte die verborgene Weisheit (denn es gibt noch doppelt soviel, als du weißt), so würdest du sehen, daß Gott dir noch nachläßt von deiner Schuld.

⁷Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

⁷Kannst du das Geheimnis Gottes ergründen oder zur Vollkommenheit des Allmächtigen gelangen?

⁸It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

⁸Sie ist himmelhoch, (was willst du tun? tiefer als der Scheol), was kannst du wissen?

⁹The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

⁹Ihre Ausdehnung ist größer als die Erde und breiter als das Meer.

¹⁰If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

¹⁰Wenn er einherfährt, verhaftet und vor Gericht stellt, wer will es ihm wehren?

¹¹For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

¹¹Denn er kennt die eitlen Menschen und sieht auch die Schuld, deren man sich nicht bewußt ist;

¹²For vain men would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.

¹²ein Hohlkopf bekommt Verstand, so daß selbst ein junger Wildesel zum Menschen umgeboren wird.

¹³If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;

¹³Wenn du nun dein Herz bereitest und deine Hände ausstreckst nach Ihm,

¹⁴If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.

¹⁴wenn du das Unrecht entfernst, das an deinen Händen klebt, und in deinen Zelten nichts Böses duldest;

¹⁵For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:

¹⁵dann darfst du ohne Scheu dein Angesicht erheben und fest auftreten ohne Furcht;

¹⁶Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:

¹⁶dann wirst du deiner Mühsal vergessen wie des Wassers, das vorübergeflossen ist;

¹⁷And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.

¹⁷heller als der Mittag wird die Zukunft dir erstehn, das Dunkel wird wie der Morgen sein;

¹⁸And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.

¹⁸dann wirst du getrost sein, weil du Hoffnung hast, und wirst sehen, daß du überall ruhig schlafen kannst.

¹⁹Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.

¹⁹Du legst dich nieder, und niemand schreckt dich auf, nein, viele schmeicheln dir alsdann.

²⁰But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

²⁰Aber die Augen der Gottlosen verschmachten, ihre Zuflucht geht ihnen verloren, und ihre Hoffnung ist das Aushauchen der Seele.
