¹Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

¹Da antwortete Eliphas, der Temaniter, und sprach:

²Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

²Soll ein Weiser mit windigem Wissen antworten und seinen Leib mit Ostwind füllen?

³Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

³Zurechtweisung mit Worten nützt nichts, und mit Reden richtet man nichts aus.

⁴Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

⁴Doch du hebst die Gottesfurcht auf und schwächst die Andacht vor Gott.

⁵For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

⁵Denn deine Missetat lehrt deinen Mund, und du wählst die Sprache der Schlauen.

⁶Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

⁶Dein eigener Mund soll dich verurteilen und nicht ich, deine Lippen sollen zeugen wider dich!

⁷Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

⁷Bist du der Erstgeborene der Menschen, und warest du vor den Hügeln da?

⁸Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

⁸Hast du Gottes Rat belauscht und alle Weisheit aufgesogen?

⁹What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

⁹Was weißt du, das wir nicht wüßten? Verstehst du mehr als wir?

¹⁰With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

¹⁰Ergraute Häupter sind auch unter uns, Greise, die älter sind als dein Vater!

¹¹Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

¹¹Sind dir zu gering die Tröstungen Gottes, der so sanft mit dir geredet hat?

¹²Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

¹²Was hat dir die Besinnung geraubt, und wie übermütig wirst du,

¹³That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

¹³daß du deinen Zorn gegen Gott auslässest und solche Worte ausstößt aus deinem Mund?

¹⁴What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

¹⁴Wie kann der Sterbliche denn rein, der vom Weibe Geborene gerecht sein?

¹⁵Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

¹⁵Siehe, seinen Heiligen traut er nicht, die Himmel sind nicht rein vor ihm.

¹⁶How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

¹⁶Wie sollte es denn der Abscheuliche, der Verdorbene, der Mensch sein, der Unrecht wie Wasser säuft?

¹⁷I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

¹⁷Ich will dich unterweisen, höre mir zu, und was ich gesehen habe, will ich dir erzählen;

¹⁸Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

¹⁸was Weise verkündigten und nicht verhehlt haben von ihren Vätern her,

¹⁹Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

¹⁹als noch ihnen allein das Land gehörte und noch kein Fremder zu ihnen herübergekommen war:

²⁰The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

²⁰Der Gottlose quält sich sein Leben lang, all die Jahre, die dem Tyrannen bestimmt sind;

²¹A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

²¹ein Schreckensgetön ist in seinen Ohren, und der Verderber überfällt ihn in seinem Glück.

²²He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

²²Er soll nicht glauben, daß er aus der Finsternis wiederkehren wird; ausersehen ist er für das Schwert!

²³He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

²³Er irrt umher nach Brot: wo findet er es ? Er weiß, daß ein finsterer Tag ihm nahe bevorsteht.

²⁴Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

²⁴Not und Bedrängnis überfallen ihn, sie überwältigen ihn, wie ein König, der zum Streit gerüstet ist.

²⁵For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

²⁵Denn er hat seine Hand gegen Gott ausgestreckt und sich gegen den Allmächtigen aufgelehnt;

²⁶He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

²⁶er ist gegen ihn angelaufen mit erhobenem Haupt, unter dem dicken Buckel seiner Schilde;

²⁷Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

²⁷sein Angesicht bedeckte sich mit Fett, und Schmer umhüllte seine Lenden;

²⁸And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

²⁸er schlug seine Wohnung in zerstörten Städten auf, in Häusern, die unbewohnt bleiben sollten, zu Trümmerhaufen bestimmt.

²⁹He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

²⁹Er wird nicht reich, sein Vermögen hat keinen Bestand, und sein Besitz breitet sich nicht aus im Land.

³⁰He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

³⁰Der Finsternis entgeht er nicht, die Flamme versengt seine Sprößlinge, vor dem Hauch Seines Mundes flieht er dahin.

³¹Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

³¹Er verlasse sich nicht auf Lügen, er ist betrogen; und Betrug wird seine Vergeltung sein.

³²It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

³²Ehe sein Tag kommt, ist sie reif; sein Zweig grünt nicht mehr.

³³He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

³³Wie ein Weinstock, der seine Herlinge abstößt, und wie ein Ölbaum ist er , der seine Blüten abwirft.

³⁴For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

³⁴Denn die Rotte der Ruchlosen ist unfruchtbar, und Feuer frißt die Zelte der Bestechung.

³⁵They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

³⁵Mit Mühsal schwanger, gebären sie Eitles, und ihr Schoß bereitet Enttäuschung.
