¹Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

¹Da antwortete der HERR dem Hiob aus dem Gewittersturm und sprach:

²Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

²Wer verfinstert da Gottes Rat mit seinen unverständigen Reden?

³Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

³Gürte doch deine Lenden wie ein Mann! Ich will dich fragen, lehre mich!

⁴Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

⁴Wo warst du, als ich den Grund der Erde legte? Sage an, wenn du es weißt!

⁵Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

⁵Wer hat ihre Maße bestimmt? Weißt du das? Oder wer hat die Meßschnur über sie ausgespannt?

⁶Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

⁶Worauf wurden ihre Grundpfeiler gestellt, oder wer hat ihren Eckstein gelegt,

⁷When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

⁷als die Morgensterne miteinander jauchzten und alle Söhne Gottes jubelten?

⁸Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

⁸Wer hat das Meer mit Dämmen umgeben, als es hervorbrach wie aus Mutterleib,

⁹When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

⁹da ich es in Wolken kleidete und es in dicke Nebel, wie in Windeln band;

¹⁰And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

¹⁰da ich ihm seine Grenze zog und ihm Damm und Riegel gab und zu ihm sprach:

¹¹And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

¹¹«Bis hierher sollst du kommen und nicht weiter, hier soll sich legen deiner Wellen Stolz!»?

¹²Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

¹²Hast du zu deiner Zeit den Sonnenaufgang angeordnet und dem Morgenrot seinen Platz angewiesen,

¹³That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

¹³daß es die Enden der Erde ergreife, damit die Frevler von ihr abgeschüttelt werden?

¹⁴It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

¹⁴Sie wandelt sich wie Ton unter dem Siegel und alles steht da wie ein Pracht- Gewand;

¹⁵And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.

¹⁵den Gottlosen wird ihr Licht entzogen und der Frevler Arm zerbricht.

¹⁶Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

¹⁶Bist du auch bis zu den Meeresquellen gekommen, oder hast du die Meerestiefe ausgeforscht?

¹⁷Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?

¹⁷Sind dir die Tore des Todes geöffnet worden, oder hast du die Tore des Todesschattens gesehen?

¹⁸Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

¹⁸Hast du die Breiten der Erde überschaut? Weißt du das alles, so sage es mir!

¹⁹Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

¹⁹Welches ist der Weg zu den Wohnungen des Lichts, und wo hat die Finsternis ihren Ort,

²⁰That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?

²⁰daß du bis zu ihrer Grenze gelangen und den Pfad zu ihrem Hause finden könntest?

²¹Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?

²¹Du weißt es, denn zu der Zeit warst du geboren, und die Zahl deiner Tage ist groß!

²²Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

²²Bist du auch bis zu den Vorratskammern des Schnees gekommen, und hast du die Speicher des Hagels gesehen,

²³Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

²³die ich aufbehalten habe für die Zeit der Not, für den Tag des Krieges und des Streits?

²⁴By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?

²⁴Auf welche Weise verteilt sich das Licht, und wie verbreitet sich der Ostwind über die Erde?

²⁵Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

²⁵Wer hat dem Regenstrom sein Bett gegraben und dem Donnerstrahl einen Weg gebahnt,

²⁶To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

²⁶damit es regne auf unbewohntes Land, auf die Wüste, wo kein Mensch ist,

²⁷To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

²⁷um zu sättigen die Einöde und Wildnis, damit das junge Grün gedeihen kann?

²⁸Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

²⁸Hat der Regen auch einen Vater, und wer hat die Tropfen des Taues erzeugt?

²⁹Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

²⁹Aus wessen Leibe ist das Eis hervorgegangen, und wer hat des Himmels Reif geboren?

³⁰The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

³⁰Wie zu Stein erstarren die Gewässer, und der Wasserspiegel schließt sich fest zusammen.

³¹Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

³¹Hast du die Bande des Siebengestirns geknüpft, oder kannst du die Fesseln des Orion lösen?

³²Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?

³²Kannst du die Zeichen des Tierkreises zu ihrer Zeit herausführen, und leitest du den Großen Bären samt seinen Jungen?

³³Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?

³³Kennst du die Gesetze des Himmels, oder bestimmst du seine Herrschaft über die Erde?

³⁴Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?

³⁴Kannst du deine Stimme zu den Wolken erheben und befehlen , daß dich Regengüsse bedecken?

³⁵Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go and say unto thee, Here we are?

³⁵Kannst du Blitze entsenden, daß sie hinfahren und zu dir sagen: Siehe, hier sind wir?

³⁶Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

³⁶Wer hat Weisheit in die Nieren gelegt, oder wer hat dem Herzen Verstand verliehen?

³⁷Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

³⁷Wer zählt die Wolken mit Weisheit, und wer schüttet die Schläuche des Himmels aus,

³⁸When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

³⁸daß der Staub zu Klumpen wird und die Schollen aneinander kleben?

³⁹Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

³⁹Jagst du der Löwin ihre Beute und stillst die Begierde der jungen Löwen,

⁴⁰When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

⁴⁰wenn sie in ihren Höhlen kauern, im Dickicht auf der Lauer liegen?

⁴¹Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

⁴¹Wer bereitet den Raben ihre Speise, wenn ihre Jungen zu Gott schreien und aus Mangel an Nahrung herumflattern?
