¹Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

²Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

²Zählst du die Monde, die sie erfüllen sollen, und weißt du die Zeit ihres Gebärens?

³They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.

³Sie legen sich nieder, werfen ihre Jungen und sind ihrer Wehen los.

⁴Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.

⁴Ihre Jungen erstarken, wachsen im Freien auf, verlassen sie und kommen nicht mehr zurück.

⁵Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?

⁵Wer hat den Wildesel frei laufen lassen, und wer hat die Bande des Wildlings aufgelöst,

⁶Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.

⁶dem ich die Steppe zur Wohnung angewiesen habe, das salzige Land zum Aufenthalt?

⁷He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.

⁷Er lacht der lärmenden Stadt, und das Geschrei des Treibers hört er nicht;

⁸The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

⁸er ersieht die Berge zu seiner Weide und läuft allen grünen Kräutern nach.

⁹Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?

⁹Wird der Büffel willig sein, dir zu dienen? Bleibt er an deiner Krippe über Nacht?

¹⁰Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

¹⁰Kannst du den Büffel mit einem Stricke binden, daß er dir Furchen mache oder hinter dir her den Talgrund egge?

¹¹Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?

¹¹Vertraust du ihm wegen seiner großen Kraft und überlässest du ihm deine Arbeit?

¹²Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?

¹²Rechnest du auf ihn, daß er dir deine Ernte einbringe oder deine Tenne fülle?

¹³Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

¹³Die Straußin schwingt fröhlich ihre Flügel; sind es aber fromme Schwingen und Federn?

¹⁴Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,

¹⁴Nein, sie überläßt ihre Eier der Erde und läßt sie im Sande ausbrüten.

¹⁵And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.

¹⁵Sie vergißt, daß ein Fuß sie zertreten und ein wildes Tier sie verderben kann.

¹⁶She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not her's: her labour is in vain without fear;

¹⁶Sie ist hart gegen ihre Jungen, als gehörten sie ihr nicht; es macht ihr keinen Kummer, wenn sie sich umsonst abgemüht hat;

¹⁷Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

¹⁷denn Gott hat ihr die Weisheit versagt und ihr keinen Verstand zugeteilt.

¹⁸What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.

¹⁸Zur Zeit, da sie ihre Flügel in die Höhe schlägt, verlacht sie Roß und Reiter.

¹⁹Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?

¹⁹Hast du dem Roß Stärke verliehen und seinen Hals mit der flatternden Mähne umhüllt?

²⁰Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.

²⁰Lehrst du es springen wie eine Heuschrecke, daß sein stolzes Schnauben furchtbar klingt?

²¹He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.

²¹Es scharrt den Boden, freut sich seiner Stärke und läuft den Waffen entgegen;

²²He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.

²²es lacht der Furcht, ist unverzagt und weicht vor dem Schwerte nicht zurück;

²³The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.

²³ber ihm klirrt der Köcher, blitzen Speer und Wurfspieß.

²⁴He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.

²⁴Es scharrt den Boden mit Ungestüm und bleibt nicht stehen, wenn die Posaune ertönt;

²⁵He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

²⁵sobald die Posaune erklingt, spricht es: Hui! Von ferne wittert es die Schlacht, die Donnerstimme der Führer und das Feldgeschrei.

²⁶Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?

²⁶Macht es dein Verstand, daß der Habicht fliegt und seine Flügel gen Süden ausbreitet?

²⁷Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

²⁷Schwingt sich auf dein Geheiß der Adler empor und legt sein Nest in der Höhe an?

²⁸She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.

²⁸Er wohnt in Felsspalten und horstet auf Klippen und Bergesspitzen.

²⁹From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.

²⁹Von dort aus erspäht er sich Beute, seine Augen schweifen weit umher;

³⁰Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

³⁰seine Jungen schlürfen Blut, und wo ein Aas ist, da ist er.
