¹When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

¹Als Jesus solches gesprochen hatte, ging er mit seinen Jüngern hinaus über den Winterbach Kidron. Dort war ein Garten, in welchen Jesus samt seinen Jüngern eintrat.

²And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

²Aber auch Judas, der ihn verriet, kannte den Ort; denn Jesus versammelte sich oft daselbst mit seinen Jüngern.

³Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

³Nachdem nun Judas die Rotte und von den Obersten und Pharisäern Diener bekommen hatte, kam er dorthin mit Fackeln und Lampen und mit Waffen.

⁴Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

⁴Jesus aber, der alles wußte, was über ihn kommen sollte, ging hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Wen suchet ihr?

⁵They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

⁵Sie antworteten ihm: Jesus, den Nazarener! Spricht Jesus zu ihnen: Ich bin es! Es stand aber auch Judas, der ihn verriet, bei ihnen.

⁶As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

⁶Als er nun zu ihnen sprach: Ich bin es! wichen sie alle zurück und fielen zu Boden.

⁷Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

⁷Nun fragte er sie wiederum: Wen suchet ihr? Sie aber sprachen: Jesus, den Nazarener!

⁸Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

⁸Jesus antwortete: Ich habe euch gesagt, daß ich es bin; suchet ihr denn mich, so lasset diese gehen!

⁹That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

⁹auf daß das Wort erfüllt würde, das er gesagt hatte: Ich habe keinen verloren von denen, die du mir gegeben hast.

¹⁰Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

¹⁰Da nun Simon Petrus ein Schwert hatte, zog er es und schlug nach dem Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab; der Name des Knechtes aber war Malchus.

¹¹Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

¹¹Da sprach Jesus zu Petrus: Stecke das Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch nicht trinken, den mir der Vater gegeben hat?

¹²Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

¹²Die Rotte nun und ihr Oberst und die Diener der Juden griffen Jesus und banden ihn

¹³And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

¹³und führten ihn zuerst zu Hannas; denn er war der Schwiegervater des Kajaphas, welcher in jenem Jahre Hoherpriester war.

¹⁴Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

¹⁴Das war der Kajaphas, der den Juden geraten hatte, es sei besser, daß ein Mensch für das Volk sterbe.

¹⁵And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

¹⁵Simon Petrus aber folgte Jesus nach, und ein anderer Jünger. Dieser Jünger war mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und ging mit Jesus hinein in den Hof des Hohenpriesters.

¹⁶But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

¹⁶Petrus aber stand draußen vor der Tür. Da ging der andere Jünger hinaus, der mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, und redete mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus hinein.

¹⁷Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

¹⁷Da spricht die Magd, die Türhüterin, zu Petrus: Bist nicht auch du einer von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Petrus spricht: Ich bin's nicht!

¹⁸And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

¹⁸Es standen aber die Knechte und Diener um ein Kohlenfeuer, das sie gemacht hatten (denn es war kalt) und wärmten sich; Petrus aber trat auch zu ihnen und wärmte sich.

¹⁹The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

¹⁹Der Hohepriester nun fragte Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre.

²⁰Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

²⁰Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe öffentlich zu der Welt geredet; ich habe stets in der Synagoge und im Tempel gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen, und im Verborgenen habe ich nichts geredet.

²¹Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

²¹Was fragst du mich? Frage die, welche gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe! Siehe, diese wissen, was ich gesagt habe.

²²And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

²²Als er aber solches sagte, gab einer der Diener, die dabeistanden, Jesus einen Backenstreich und sprach: Antwortest du dem Hohenpriester also?

²³Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

²³Jesus erwiderte ihm: Habe ich unrecht geredet, so beweise, was daran unrecht war; habe ich aber recht geredet, was schlägst du mich?

²⁴Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

²⁴Da sandte ihn Hannas gebunden zum Hohenpriester Kajaphas.

²⁵And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

²⁵Simon Petrus aber stand da und wärmte sich. Sie sprachen zu ihm: Bist nicht auch du einer seiner Jünger? Er leugnete und sprach: Ich bin's nicht!

²⁶One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

²⁶Da sagte einer von den Knechten des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter dessen, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: Sah ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm?

²⁷Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

²⁷Da leugnete Petrus abermals, und alsbald krähte der Hahn.

²⁸Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

²⁸Sie führten nun Jesus von Kajaphas in das Amthaus. Es war aber noch früh. Und sie selbst betraten das Amthaus nicht, damit sie nicht unrein würden, sondern das Passah essen könnten.

²⁹Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

²⁹Da ging Pilatus zu ihnen hinaus und fragte: Was für eine Klage erhebt ihr wider diesen Menschen?

³⁰They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

³⁰Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Wäre er kein Übeltäter, so hätten wir ihn dir nicht überantwortet!

³¹Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

³¹Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: So nehmet ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz! Die Juden sprachen zu ihm: Wir dürfen niemand töten!

³²That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

³²auf daß Jesu Wort erfüllt würde, das er sagte, als er andeutete, welches Todes er sterben sollte.

³³Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

³³Nun ging Pilatus wieder ins Amthaus hinein und rief Jesus und fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden?

³⁴Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

³⁴Jesus antwortete: Redest du das von dir selbst, oder haben es dir andere von mir gesagt?

³⁵Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

³⁵Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich denn ein Jude? Dein Volk und die Hohenpriester haben dich mir überantwortet! Was hast du getan?

³⁶Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

³⁶Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich ist nicht von dieser Welt; wäre mein Reich von dieser Welt, so hätten meine Diener gekämpft, daß ich den Juden nicht ausgeliefert würde; nun aber ist mein Reich nicht von hier.

³⁷Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

³⁷Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: So bist du also ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es; ich bin ein König. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, daß ich der Wahrheit Zeugnis gebe; jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört meine Stimme.

³⁸Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

³⁸Spricht Pilatus zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und nachdem er das gesagt hatte, ging er wieder hinaus zu den Juden und spricht zu ihnen: Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm!

³⁹But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

³⁹Ihr habt aber eine Gewohnheit, daß ich euch am Passahfest einen freigebe; wollt ihr nun, daß ich euch den König der Juden freigebe?

⁴⁰Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

⁴⁰Sie schrieen alle und sprachen: Nicht diesen, sondern Barabbas! Barabbas aber war ein Räuber.
