¹Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

¹Da nahm Pilatus Jesus und ließ ihn geißeln.

²And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

²Und die Kriegsknechte flochten eine Krone von Dornen und setzten sie ihm auf das Haupt und legten ihm ein Purpurkleid um, traten vor ihn hin und sprachen:

³And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

³Sei gegrüßt, du König der Juden! und gaben ihm Backenstreiche.

⁴Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

⁴Da ging Pilatus wieder hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Seht, ich führe ihn zu euch heraus, damit ihr erkennet, daß ich keine Schuld an ihm finde!

⁵Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

⁵Also kam Jesus heraus und trug die Dornenkrone und das Purpurkleid. Und er spricht zu ihnen: Sehet, welch ein Mensch!

⁶When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

⁶Als ihn nun die Hohenpriester und die Diener sahen, schrieen sie und sprachen: Kreuzige, kreuzige ihn! Pilatus spricht zu ihnen: Nehmt ihr ihn hin und kreuziget ihn! Denn ich finde keine Schuld an ihm.

⁷The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

⁷Die Juden antworteten ihm: Wir haben ein Gesetz, und nach unserm Gesetz muß er sterben, weil er sich selbst zu Gottes Sohn gemacht hat.

⁸When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

⁸Als Pilatus dieses Wort hörte, fürchtete er sich noch mehr

⁹And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

⁹und ging wieder in das Amthaus hinein und sprach zu Jesus: Woher bist du? Aber Jesus gab ihm keine Antwort.

¹⁰Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

¹⁰Da spricht Pilatus zu ihm: Mit mir redest du nicht? Weißt du nicht, daß ich Macht habe, dich freizulassen, und Macht habe, dich zu kreuzigen?

¹¹Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

¹¹Jesus antwortete: Du hättest gar keine Macht über mich, wenn sie dir nicht von oben herab gegeben wäre; darum hat der, welcher mich dir überantwortet hat, größere Schuld!

¹²And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

¹²Von da an suchte Pilatus ihn freizugeben. Aber die Juden schrieen und sprachen: Lässest du diesen frei, so bist du nicht des Kaisers Freund; denn wer sich selbst zum König macht, der ist wider den Kaiser!

¹³When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

¹³Als nun Pilatus diese Worte hörte, führte er Jesus hinaus und setzte sich auf den Richterstuhl, an der Stätte, die Steinpflaster genannt wird, auf hebräisch aber Gabbatha.

¹⁴And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

¹⁴Es war aber Rüsttag für das Passah, um die sechste Stunde. Und er sprach zu den Juden: Seht, das ist euer König.

¹⁵But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

¹⁵Sie aber schrieen: Fort, fort mit ihm! Kreuzige ihn! Pilatus spricht zu ihnen: Euren König soll ich kreuzigen? Die Hohenpriester antworteten: Wir haben keinen König, als den Kaiser!

¹⁶Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

¹⁶Da überantwortete er ihnen Jesus, daß er gekreuzigt würde. Sie nahmen aber Jesus und führten ihn hin.

¹⁷And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

¹⁷Und er trug sein Kreuz selbst und ging hinaus zur sogenannten Schädelstätte, welche auf hebräisch Golgatha heißt.

¹⁸Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

¹⁸Dort kreuzigten sie ihn und mit ihm zwei andere zu beiden Seiten, Jesus aber in der Mitte.

¹⁹And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

¹⁹Pilatus aber schrieb eine Überschrift und heftete sie an das Kreuz; und es war geschrieben: Jesus, der Nazarener, der König der Juden.

²⁰This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

²⁰Diese Überschrift lasen viele Juden; denn der Ort, wo Jesus gekreuzigt wurde, war nahe bei der Stadt, und es war in hebräischer, lateinischer und griechischer Sprache geschrieben.

²¹Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

²¹Da sprachen die Hohenpriester der Juden zu Pilatus: Schreibe nicht: Der König der Juden, sondern daß jener gesagt habe: Ich bin König der Juden.

²²Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

²²Pilatus antwortete: Was ich geschrieben habe, das habe ich geschrieben!

²³Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

²³Als nun die Kriegsknechte Jesus gekreuzigt hatten, nahmen sie seine Kleider und machten vier Teile, für jeden Kriegsknecht einen Teil; dazu den Leibrock. Der Leibrock aber war ohne Naht, von oben bis unten in einem Stück gewoben.

²⁴They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

²⁴Da sprachen sie zueinander: Laßt uns den nicht zertrennen, sondern darum losen, wem er gehören soll; auf daß die Schrift erfüllt würde, die da spricht: Sie haben meine Kleider unter sich geteilt und über mein Gewand das Los geworfen. Solches taten die Kriegsknechte.

²⁵Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁵Es standen aber bei dem Kreuze Jesu seine Mutter und die Schwester seiner Mutter, Maria, des Klopas Frau, und Maria Magdalena.

²⁶When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

²⁶Als nun Jesus die Mutter sah und den Jünger dabei stehen, den er lieb hatte, spricht er zu seiner Mutter: Weib, siehe, dein Sohn!

²⁷Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

²⁷Darauf spricht er zu dem Jünger: Siehe, deine Mutter! Und von der Stunde an nahm sie der Jünger zu sich.

²⁸After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

²⁸Nach diesem, da Jesus wußte, daß schon alles vollbracht war, damit die Schrift erfüllt würde, spricht er: Mich dürstet!

²⁹Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

²⁹Es stand da ein Gefäß voll Essig; sie aber füllten einen Schwamm mit Essig, legten ihn um einen Ysop und hielten es ihm an den Mund.

³⁰When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

³⁰Als nun Jesus den Essig genommen hatte, sprach er: Es ist vollbracht! Und er neigte das Haupt und übergab den Geist.

³¹The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

³¹Die Juden nun, damit die Leichname nicht während des Sabbats am Kreuze blieben (es war nämlich Rüsttag, und jener Sabbattag war groß), baten Pilatus, daß ihnen die Beine zerschlagen und sie herabgenommen würden.

³²Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

³²Da kamen die Kriegsknechte und brachen dem ersten die Beine, ebenso dem andern, der mit ihm gekreuzigt worden war.

³³But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

³³Als sie aber zu Jesus kamen und sahen, daß er schon gestorben war, zerschlugen sie ihm die Beine nicht,

³⁴But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

³⁴sondern einer der Kriegsknechte durchbohrte seine Seite mit einem Speer, und alsbald floß Blut und Wasser heraus.

³⁵And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

³⁵Und der das gesehen hat, der hat es bezeugt, und sein Zeugnis ist wahr, und er weiß, daß er die Wahrheit sagt, auf daß auch ihr glaubet.

³⁶For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

³⁶Denn solches ist geschehen, damit die Schrift erfüllt würde: «Es soll ihm kein Bein zerbrochen werden!»

³⁷And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

³⁷Und abermals spricht eine andere Schrift: «Sie werden den ansehen, welchen sie durchstochen haben.»

³⁸And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

³⁸Darnach bat Joseph von Arimathia (der ein Jünger Jesu war, doch heimlich, aus Furcht vor den Juden), den Pilatus, daß er den Leib Jesu abnehmen dürfe. Und Pilatus erlaubte es. Da kam er und nahm den Leib Jesu herab.

³⁹And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

³⁹Es kam aber auch Nikodemus, der vormals bei Nacht zu Jesus gekommen war, und brachte eine Mischung von Myrrhe und Aloe, etwa hundert Pfund.

⁴⁰Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

⁴⁰Also nahmen sie den Leib Jesu und banden ihn samt den Spezereien in leinene Tücher, wie die Juden zu begraben pflegen.

⁴¹Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

⁴¹Es war aber an dem Ort, wo Jesus gekreuzigt worden war, ein Garten und in dem Garten eine neue Gruft, in welche noch niemand gelegt worden war.

⁴²There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

⁴²Dahin nun legten sie Jesus, wegen des Rüsttages der Juden, weil die Gruft nahe war.
