¹For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;

¹わたしが、あなたがたとラオデキヤにいる人たちのため、また、直接にはまだ会ったことのない人々のために、どんなに苦闘しているか、わかってもらいたい。

²That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

²それは彼らが、心を励まされ、愛によって結び合わされ、豊かな理解力を十分に与えられ、神の奥義なるキリストを知るに至るためである。

³In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

³キリストのうちには、知恵と知識との宝が、いっさい隠されている。

⁴And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

⁴わたしがこう言うのは、あなたがたが、だれにも巧みな言葉で迷わされることのないためである。

⁵For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

⁵たとい、わたしは肉体においては離れていても、霊においてはあなたがたと一緒にいて、あなたがたの秩序正しい様子とキリストに対するあなたがたの強固な信仰とを見て、喜んでいる。

⁶As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

⁶このように、あなたがたは主キリスト・イエスを受けいれたのだから、彼にあって歩きなさい。

⁷Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

⁷また、彼に根ざし、彼にあって建てられ、そして教えられたように、信仰が確立されて、あふれるばかり感謝しなさい。

⁸Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

⁸あなたがたは、むなしいだましごとの哲学で、人のとりこにされないように、気をつけなさい。それはキリストに従わず、世のもろもろの霊力に従う人間の言伝えに基くものにすぎない。

⁹For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

⁹キリストにこそ、満ちみちているいっさいの神の徳が、かたちをとって宿っており、

¹⁰And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

¹⁰そしてあなたがたは、キリストにあって、それに満たされているのである。彼はすべての支配と権威とのかしらであり、

¹¹In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

¹¹あなたがたはまた、彼にあって、手によらない割礼、すなわち、キリストの割礼を受けて、肉のからだを脱ぎ捨てたのである。

¹²Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

¹²あなたがたはバプテスマを受けて彼と共に葬られ、同時に、彼を死人の中からよみがえらせた神の力を信じる信仰によって、彼と共によみがえらされたのである。

¹³And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

¹³あなたがたは、先には罪の中にあり、かつ肉の割礼がないままで死んでいた者であるが、神は、あなたがたをキリストと共に生かし、わたしたちのいっさいの罪をゆるして下さった。

¹⁴Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

¹⁴神は、わたしたちを責めて不利におとしいれる証書を、その規定もろともぬり消し、これを取り除いて、十字架につけてしまわれた。

¹⁵And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

¹⁵そして、もろもろの支配と権威との武装を解除し、キリストにあって凱旋し、彼らをその行列に加えて、さらしものとされたのである。

¹⁶Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

¹⁶だから、あなたがたは、食物と飲み物とにつき、あるいは祭や新月や安息日などについて、だれにも批評されてはならない。

¹⁷Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

¹⁷これらは、きたるべきものの影であって、その本体はキリストにある。

¹⁸Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

¹⁸あなたがたは、わざとらしい謙そんと天使礼拝とにおぼれている人々から、いろいろと悪評されてはならない。彼らは幻を見たことを重んじ、肉の思いによっていたずらに誇るだけで、

¹⁹And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

¹⁹キリストなるかしらに、しっかりと着くことをしない。このかしらから出て、からだ全体は、節と節、筋と筋とによって強められ結び合わされ、神に育てられて成長していくのである。

²⁰Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

²⁰もしあなたがたが、キリストと共に死んで世のもろもろの霊力から離れたのなら、なぜ、なおこの世に生きているもののように、

²¹(Touch not; taste not; handle not;

²¹「さわるな、味わうな、触れるな」などという規定に縛られているのか。

²²Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

²²これらは皆、使えば尽きてしまうもの、人間の規定や教によっているものである。これらのことは、ひとりよがりの礼拝とわざとらしい謙そんと、からだの苦行とをともなうので、知恵のあるしわざらしく見えるが、実は、ほしいままな肉欲を防ぐのに、なんの役にも立つものではない。

²³Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

²³これらのことは、ひとりよがりの礼拝とわざとらしい謙そんと、からだの苦行とをともなうので、知恵のあるしわざらしく見えるが、実は、ほしいままな肉欲を防ぐのに、なんの役にも立つものではない。
