¹Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

¹そういうわけだから、わたしたちは、キリストの教の初歩をあとにして、完成を目ざして進もうではないか。今さら、死んだ行いの悔改めと神への信仰、

²Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

²洗いごとについての教と按手、死人の復活と永遠のさばき、などの基本の教をくりかえし学ぶことをやめようではないか。

³And this will we do, if God permit.

³神の許しを得て、そうすることにしよう。

⁴For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

⁴いったん、光を受けて天よりの賜物を味わい、聖霊にあずかる者となり、

⁵And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

⁵また、神の良きみ言葉と、きたるべき世の力とを味わった者たちが、

⁶If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

⁶そののち堕落した場合には、またもや神の御子を、自ら十字架につけて、さらしものにするわけであるから、ふたたび悔改めにたち帰ることは不可能である。

⁷For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

⁷たとえば、土地が、その上にたびたび降る雨を吸い込で、耕す人々に役立つ作物を育てるなら、神の祝福にあずかる。

⁸But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

⁸しかし、いばらやあざみをはえさせるなら、それは無用になり、やがてのろわれ、ついには焼かれてしまう。

⁹But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

⁹しかし、愛する者たちよ。こうは言うものの、わたしたちは、救にかかわる更に良いことがあるのを、あなたがたについて確信している。

¹⁰For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

¹⁰神は不義なかたではないから、あなたがたの働きや、あなたがたがかつて聖徒に仕え、今もなお仕えて、御名のために示してくれた愛を、お忘れになることはない。

¹¹And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

¹¹わたしたちは、あなたがたがひとり残らず、最後まで望みを持ちつづけるためにも、同じ熱意を示し、

¹²That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

¹²怠ることがなく、信仰と忍耐とをもって約束のものを受け継ぐ人々に見習う者となるように、と願ってやまない。

¹³For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

¹³さて、神がアブラハムに対して約束されたとき、さして誓うのに、ご自分よりも上のものがないので、ご自分をさして誓って、

¹⁴Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

¹⁴「わたしは、必ずあなたを祝福し、必ずあなたの子孫をふやす」と言われた。

¹⁵And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

¹⁵このようにして、アブラハムは忍耐強く待ったので、約束のものを得たのである。

¹⁶For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

¹⁶いったい、人間は自分より上のものをさして誓うのであり、そして、その誓いはすべての反対論を封じる保証となるのである。

¹⁷Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

¹⁷そこで、神は、約束のものを受け継ぐ人々に、ご計画の不変であることを、いっそうはっきり示そうと思われ、誓いによって保証されたのである。

¹⁸That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

¹⁸それは、偽ることのあり得ない神に立てられた二つの不変の事がらによって、前におかれている望みを捕えようとして世をのがれてきたわたしたちが、力強い励ましを受けるためである。

¹⁹Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

¹⁹この望みは、わたしたちにとって、いわば、たましいを安全にし不動にする錨であり、かつ「幕の内」にはいり行かせるものである。その幕の内に、イエスは、永遠にメルキゼデクに等しい大祭司として、わたしたちのためにさきがけとなって、はいられたのである。

²⁰Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
