¹Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

¹その時、テマンびとエリパズが答えて言った、

²If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?

²「もし人があなたにむかって意見を述べるならば、あなたは腹を立てるでしょうか。しかしだれが黙っておれましょう。

³Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

³見よ、あなたは多くの人を教えさとし、衰えた手を強くした。

⁴Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

⁴あなたの言葉はつまずく者をたすけ起し、かよわいひざを強くした。

⁵But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

⁵ところが今、この事があなたに臨むと、あなたは耐え得ない。この事があなたに触れると、あなたはおじ惑う。

⁶Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

⁶あなたが神を恐れていることは、あなたのよりどころではないか。あなたの道の全きことは、あなたの望みではないか。

⁷Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

⁷考えてみよ、だれが罪のないのに、滅ぼされた者があるか。どこに正しい者で、断ち滅ぼされた者があるか。

⁸Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

⁸わたしの見た所によれば、不義を耕し、害悪をまく者は、それを刈り取っている。

⁹By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

⁹彼らは神のいぶきによって滅び、その怒りの息によって消えうせる。

¹⁰The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

¹⁰ししのほえる声、たけきししの声はともにやみ、若きししのきばは折られ、

¹¹The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.

¹¹雄じしは獲物を得ずに滅び、雌じしの子は散らされる。

¹²Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

¹²さて、わたしに、言葉がひそかに臨んだ、わたしの耳はそのささやきを聞いた。

¹³In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,

¹³すなわち人の熟睡するころ、夜の幻によって思い乱れている時、

¹⁴Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

¹⁴恐れがわたしに臨んだので、おののき、わたしの骨はことごとく震えた。

¹⁵Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:

¹⁵時に、霊があって、わたしの顔の前を過ぎたので、わたしの身の毛はよだった。

¹⁶It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

¹⁶そのものは立ちどまったが、わたしはその姿を見わけることができなかった。一つのかたちが、わたしの目の前にあった。わたしは静かな声を聞いた、

¹⁷Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

¹⁷『人は神の前に正しくありえようか。人はその造り主の前に清くありえようか。

¹⁸Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:

¹⁸見よ、彼はそのしもべをさえ頼みとせず、その天使をも誤れる者とみなされる。

¹⁹How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?

¹⁹まして、泥の家に住む者、ちりをその基とする者、しみのようにつぶされる者。

²⁰They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.

²⁰彼らは朝から夕までの間に打ち砕かれ、顧みる者もなく、永遠に滅びる。もしその天幕の綱が彼らのうちに取り去られるなら、ついに悟ることもなく、死にうせるではないか』。

²¹Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.
