¹Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

¹試みに呼んでみよ、だれかあなたに答える者があるか。どの聖者にあなたは頼もうとするのか。

²For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

²確かに、憤りは愚かな者を殺し、ねたみはあさはかな者を死なせる。

³I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

³わたしは愚かな者の根を張るのを見た、しかしわたしは、にわかにそのすみかをのろった。

⁴His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

⁴その子らは安きを得ず、町の門でしえたげられても、これを救う者がない。

⁵Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

⁵その収穫は飢えた人が食べ、いばらの中からさえ、これを奪う。また、かわいた者はその財産をあえぎ求める。

⁶Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

⁶苦しみは、ちりから起るものでなく、悩みは土から生じるものでない。

⁷Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

⁷人が生れて悩みを受けるのは、火の子が上に飛ぶにひとしい。

⁸I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

⁸しかし、わたしであるならば、神に求め、神に、わたしの事をまかせる。

⁹Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

⁹彼は大いなる事をされるかたで、測り知れない、その不思議なみわざは数えがたい。

¹⁰Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:

¹⁰彼は地に雨を降らせ、野に水を送られる。

¹¹To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

¹¹彼は低い者を高くあげ、悲しむ者を引き上げて、安全にされる。

¹²He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

¹²彼は悪賢い者の計りごとを敗られる。それで何事もその手になし遂げることはできない。

¹³He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

¹³彼は賢い者を、彼ら自身の悪巧みによって捕え、曲った者の計りごとをくつがえされる。

¹⁴They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

¹⁴彼らは昼も、やみに会い、真昼にも、夜のように手探りする。

¹⁵But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

¹⁵彼は貧しい者を彼らの口のつるぎから救い、また強い者の手から救われる。

¹⁶So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

¹⁶それゆえ乏しい者に望みがあり、不義はその口を閉じる。

¹⁷Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

¹⁷見よ、神に戒められる人はさいわいだ。それゆえ全能者の懲しめを軽んじてはならない。

¹⁸For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

¹⁸彼は傷つけ、また包み、撃ち、またその手をもっていやされる。

¹⁹He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

¹⁹彼はあなたを六つの悩みから救い、七つのうちでも、災はあなたに触れることがない。

²⁰In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

²⁰ききんの時には、あなたをあがなって、死を免れさせ、いくさの時には、つるぎの力を免れさせられる。

²¹Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

²¹あなたは舌をもってむち打たれる時にも、おおい隠され、滅びが来る時でも、恐れることはない。

²²At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

²²あなたは滅びと、ききんとを笑い、地の獣をも恐れることはない。

²³For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

²³あなたは野の石と契約を結び、野の獣はあなたと和らぐからである。

²⁴And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

²⁴あなたは自分の天幕の安全なことを知り、自分の家畜のおりを見回っても、欠けた物がなく、

²⁵Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

²⁵また、あなたの子孫の多くなり、そのすえが地の草のようになるのを知るであろう。

²⁶Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.

²⁶あなたは高齢に達して墓に入る、あたかも麦束をその季節になって打ち場に運びあげるようになるであろう。見よ、われわれの尋ねきわめた所はこのとおりだ。あなたはこれを聞いて、みずから知るがよい」。

²⁷Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

²⁷見よ、われわれの尋ねきわめた所はこのとおりだ。あなたはこれを聞いて、みずから知るがよい」。
