¹And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

¹ある日、イエスが宮で人々に教え、福音を宣べておられると、祭司長や律法学者たちが、長老たちと共に近寄ってきて、

²And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

²イエスに言った、「何の権威によってこれらの事をするのですか。そうする権威をあなたに与えたのはだれですか、わたしたちに言ってください」。

³And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

³そこで、イエスは答えて言われた、「わたしも、ひと言たずねよう。それに答えてほしい。

⁴The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

⁴ヨハネのバプテスマは、天からであったか、人からであったか」。

⁵And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

⁵彼らは互に論じて言った、「もし天からだと言えば、では、なぜ彼を信じなかったのか、とイエスは言うだろう。

⁶But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

⁶しかし、もし人からだと言えば、民衆はみな、ヨハネを預言者だと信じているから、わたしたちを石で打つだろう」。

⁷And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

⁷それで彼らは「どこからか、知りません」と答えた。

⁸And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

⁸イエスはこれに対して言われた、「わたしも何の権威によってこれらの事をするのか、あなたがたに言うまい」。

⁹Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.

⁹そこでイエスは次の譬を民衆に語り出された、「ある人がぶどう園を造って農夫たちに貸し、長い旅に出た。

¹⁰And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

¹⁰季節になったので、農夫たちのところへ、ひとりの僕を送って、ぶどう園の収穫の分け前を出させようとした。ところが、農夫たちは、その僕を袋だたきにし、から手で帰らせた。

¹¹And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

¹¹そこで彼はもうひとりの僕を送った。彼らはその僕も袋だたきにし、侮辱を加えて、から手で帰らせた。

¹²And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

¹²そこで更に三人目の者を送ったが、彼らはこの者も、傷を負わせて追い出した。

¹³Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

¹³ぶどう園の主人は言った、『どうしようか。そうだ、わたしの愛子をつかわそう。これなら、たぶん敬ってくれるだろう』。

¹⁴But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁴ところが、農夫たちは彼を見ると、『あれはあと取りだ。あれを殺してしまおう。そうしたら、その財産はわれわれのものになるのだ』と互に話し合い、

¹⁵So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

¹⁵彼をぶどう園の外に追い出して殺した。そのさい、ぶどう園の主人は、彼らをどうするだろうか。

¹⁶He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

¹⁶彼は出てきて、この農夫たちを殺し、ぶどう園を他の人々に与えるであろう」。人々はこれを聞いて、「そんなことがあってはなりません」と言った。

¹⁷And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

¹⁷そこで、イエスは彼らを見つめて言われた、「それでは、『家造りらの捨てた石が隅のかしら石になった』と書いてあるのは、どういうことか。

¹⁸Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

¹⁸すべてその石の上に落ちる者は打ち砕かれ、それがだれかの上に落ちかかるなら、その人はこなみじんにされるであろう」。

¹⁹And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

¹⁹このとき、律法学者たちや祭司長たちはイエスに手をかけようと思ったが、民衆を恐れた。いまの譬が自分たちに当てて語られたのだと、悟ったからである。

²⁰And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

²⁰そこで、彼らは機会をうかがい、義人を装うまわし者どもを送って、イエスを総督の支配と権威とに引き渡すため、その言葉じりを捕えさせようとした。

²¹And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

²¹彼らは尋ねて言った、「先生、わたしたちは、あなたの語り教えられることが正しく、また、あなたは分け隔てをなさらず、真理に基いて神の道を教えておられることを、承知しています。

²²Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

²²ところで、カイザルに貢を納めてよいでしょうか、いけないでしょうか」。

²³But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

²³イエスは彼らの悪巧みを見破って言われた、

²⁴Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.

²⁴「デナリを見せなさい。それにあるのは、だれの肖像、だれの記号なのか」。「カイザルのです」と、彼らが答えた。

²⁵And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

²⁵するとイエスは彼らに言われた、「それなら、カイザルのものはカイザルに、神のものは神に返しなさい」。

²⁶And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

²⁶そこで彼らは、民衆の前でイエスの言葉じりを捕えることができず、その答に驚嘆して、黙ってしまった。

²⁷Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

²⁷復活ということはないと言い張っていたサドカイ人のある者たちが、イエスに近寄ってきて質問した、

²⁸Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

²⁸「先生、モーセは、わたしたちのためにこう書いています、『もしある人の兄が妻をめとり、子がなくて死んだなら、弟はこの女をめとって、兄のために子をもうけねばならない』。

²⁹There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

²⁹ところで、ここに七人の兄弟がいました。長男は妻をめとりましたが、子がなくて死に、

³⁰And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.

³⁰そして次男、三男と、次々に、その女をめとり、

³¹And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.

³¹七人とも同様に、子をもうけずに死にました。

³²Last of all the woman died also.

³²のちに、その女も死にました。

³³Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.

³³さて、復活の時には、この女は七人のうち、だれの妻になるのですか。七人とも彼女を妻にしたのですが」。

³⁴And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

³⁴イエスは彼らに言われた、「この世の子らは、めとったり、とついだりするが、

³⁵But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

³⁵かの世にはいって死人からの復活にあずかるにふさわしい者たちは、めとったり、とついだりすることはない。

³⁶Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

³⁶彼らは天使に等しいものであり、また復活にあずかるゆえに、神の子でもあるので、もう死ぬことはあり得ないからである。

³⁷Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

³⁷死人がよみがえることは、モーセも柴の篇で、主を『アブラハムの神、イサクの神、ヤコブの神』と呼んで、これを示した。

³⁸For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

³⁸神は死んだ者の神ではなく、生きている者の神である。人はみな神に生きるものだからである」。

³⁹Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

³⁹律法学者のうちのある人々が答えて言った、「先生、仰せのとおりです」。

⁴⁰And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.

⁴⁰彼らはそれ以上何もあえて問いかけようとしなかった。

⁴¹And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?

⁴¹イエスは彼らに言われた、「どうして人々はキリストをダビデの子だと言うのか。

⁴²And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

⁴²ダビデ自身が詩篇の中で言っている、『主はわが主に仰せになった、

⁴³Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

⁴³あなたの敵をあなたの足台とする時までは、わたしの右に座していなさい』。

⁴⁴David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

⁴⁴このように、ダビデはキリストを主と呼んでいる。それなら、どうしてキリストはダビデの子であろうか」。

⁴⁵Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

⁴⁵民衆がみな聞いているとき、イエスは弟子たちに言われた、

⁴⁶Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

⁴⁶「律法学者に気をつけなさい。彼らは長い衣を着て歩くのを好み、広場での敬礼や会堂の上席や宴会の上座をよろこび、やもめたちの家を食い倒し、見えのために長い祈をする。彼らはもっときびしいさばきを受けるであろう」。

⁴⁷Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
