¹When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

²And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

²あなたがもし食をたしなむ者であるならば、あなたののどに刀をあてよ。

³Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

³そのごちそうをむさぼり食べてはならない、これは人を欺く食物だからである。

⁴Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

⁴富を得ようと苦労してはならない、かしこく思いとどまるがよい。

⁵Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

⁵あなたの目をそれにとめると、それはない、富はたちまち自ら翼を生じて、わしのように天に飛び去るからだ。

⁶Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

⁶物惜しみする人のパンを食べてはならない、そのごちそうをむさぼり願ってはならない。

⁷For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

⁷彼は心のうちで勘定する人のように、「食え、飲め」とあなたに言うけれども、その心はあなたに真実ではない。

⁸The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

⁸あなたはついにその食べた物を吐き出すようになり、あなたのねんごろな言葉もむだになる。

⁹Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

⁹愚かな者の耳に語ってはならない、彼はあなたの言葉が示す知恵をいやしめるからだ。

¹⁰Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

¹⁰古い地境を移してはならない、みなしごの畑を侵してはならない。

¹¹For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

¹¹彼らのあがない主は強くいらせられ、あなたに逆らって彼らの訴えを弁護されるからだ。

¹²Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

¹²あなたの心を教訓に用い、あなたの耳を知識の言葉に傾けよ。

¹³Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

¹³子を懲らすことを、さし控えてはならない、むちで彼を打っても死ぬことはない。

¹⁴Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

¹⁴もし、むちで彼を打つならば、その命を陰府から救うことができる。

¹⁵My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

¹⁵わが子よ、もしあなたの心が賢くあれば、わたしの心もまた喜び、

¹⁶Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

¹⁶もしあなたのくちびるが正しい事を言うならば、わたしの心も喜ぶ。

¹⁷Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

¹⁷心に罪びとをうらやんではならない、ただ、ひねもす主を恐れよ。

¹⁸For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

¹⁸かならず後のよい報いがあって、あなたの望みは、すたらない。

¹⁹Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

¹⁹わが子よ、よく聞いて、知恵を得よ、かつ、あなたの心を道に向けよ。

²⁰Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

²⁰酒にふけり、肉をたしなむ者と交わってはならない。

²¹For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

²¹酒にふける者と、肉をたしなむ者とは貧しくなり、眠りをむさぼる者は、ぼろを身にまとうようになる。

²²Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

²²あなたを生んだ父のいうことを聞き、年老いた母を軽んじてはならない。

²³Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

²³真理を買え、これを売ってはならない、知恵と教訓と悟りをも買え。

²⁴The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

²⁴正しい人の父は大いによろこび、知恵ある子を生む者は子のために楽しむ。

²⁵Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

²⁵あなたの父母を楽しませ、あなたを産んだ母を喜ばせよ。

²⁶My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

²⁶わが子よ、あなたの心をわたしに与え、あなたの目をわたしの道に注げ。

²⁷For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

²⁷遊女は深い穴のごとく、みだらな女は狭い井戸のようだ。

²⁸She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

²⁸彼女は盗びとのように人をうかがい、かつ世の人のうちに、不信実な者を多くする。

²⁹Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

²⁹災ある者はだれか、憂いある者はだれか、争いをする者はだれか、煩いある者はだれか、ゆえなく傷をうける者はだれか、赤い目をしている者はだれか。

³⁰They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

³⁰酒に夜をふかす者、行って、混ぜ合わせた酒を味わう者である。

³¹Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

³¹酒はあかく、杯の中にあわだち、なめらかにくだる、あなたはこれを見てはならない。

³²At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

³²これはついに、へびのようにかみ、まむしのように刺す。

³³Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

³³あなたの目は怪しいものを見、あなたの心は偽りを言う。

³⁴Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

³⁴あなたは海の中に寝ている人のように、帆柱の上に寝ている人のようになる。あなたは言う、「人がわたしを撃ったが、わたしは痛くはなかった。わたしを、たたいたが、わたしは何も覚えはない。いつわたしはさめるのか、また酒を求めよう」と。

³⁵They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
