¹Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.

¹ ای مردم اورشلیم تمام کوچه‌های شهر را بگردید! به تمام اطراف نگاه کنید! با چشمان خودتان ببینید بازارچه‌ها را جستجو کنید! آیا می‌توانید حتّی یک نفر را بیابید که درستکار باشد و می‌کوشد تا نسبت به خداوند با‌وفا باشد؟ اگر بتوانید چنین شخصی را بیابید، خداوند اورشلیم را خواهد بخشید.

²And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely.

² ادّعا ‌می‌کنید که خداوند را می‌پرستید، امّا از صمیم قلب نمی‌گویید.

³O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

³ خداوند خواهان وفاداری شماست. او شما را تنبیه کرد، امّا هیچ توجهی نکردید. او شما را درهم شکست، ولی از آموختن امتناع کردید. شما سرسخت بودید و نخواستید از گناهانتان توبه کنید.

⁴Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.

⁴ آنگاه فکر کردم: «اینها فقط افراد فقیر و جاهل هستند که چنین می‌کنند. آنها احمقانه رفتار می‌کنند؛ چون نمی‌دانند خدا از آنها چه می‌خواهد، و از آنها انتظار چه رفتاری دارد.

⁵I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.

⁵ من پیش صاحبان قدرت می‌روم و با آنها صحبت می‌کنم. آنها حتماً می‌دانند خدایشان از آنها چه می‌خواهد، و انتظار دارد آنها چگونه زندگی کنند.» امّا دیدم که آنها هم، همه سر به نافرمانی زده‌اند و از اطاعت وی امتناع می‌کنند.

⁶Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.

⁶ به همین دلیل است که شیران جنگل، آنها را خواهند کشت؛ گرگهای بیابانی آنها را قطعه‌قطعه خواهند کرد، و پلنگها در تمام شهرهایشان به کمین نشسته‌اند. اگر آن مردمان از خانه‌های خود بیرون بروند، دریده و پاره‌پاره خواهند شد، چون گناهان آنها بی‌شمار است و مکرراً از فرمان خداوند سرپیچی کرده‌اند.

⁷How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses.

⁷ خداوند پرسید: «چرا من می‌بایست گناهان قوم خودم را ببخشم؟ آنها مرا ترک کرده‌اند و خدایانی را پرستیده‌اند که واقعی نیستند. من قوم خود را چنان تغذیه کردم که همیشه سیر بودند، امّا آنها مرتکب زنا شدند و وقت خود را با فاحشه‌‌ها تلف کردند.

⁸They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.

⁸ آنها مانند اسبان نری هستند که خوب تغذیه شده‌اند و شهوت شدیدی بر آنها غلبه کرده است، و هریک برای زن همسایه شیهه می‌کشد.

⁹Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

⁹ آیا نباید من آنها را برای این چیزها مجازات کنم، و از ملّتی مثل اینها انتقام بگیرم؟

¹⁰Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD's.

¹⁰ من دشمنان را می‌فرستم تا تاکستانهای قوم مرا خراب کنند، ولی آن را کاملاً از بین نبرند. به آنها خواهم گفت شاخه‌های آن را قطع کنند، چون آن شاخه‌ها به من تعلّق ندارند.

¹¹For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD.

¹¹ مردم اسرائیل و یهودا به من کاملاً خیانت کرده‌اند. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

¹²They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

¹² قوم خداوند منکر او شده و گفته‌اند: «او واقعاً کاری نخواهد کرد. ما روزگار سختی نخواهیم داشت و از جنگ و قحطی خبری نخواهد بود.»

¹³And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.

¹³ آنها گفته‌اند که انبیا فقط یک طبل توخالی هستند. پیامی از جانب خداوند ندارند. خداوند -‌خدای قادر مطلق- به من گفت: «ای ارمیا، چون مردم چنین چیزهایی می‌گویند، من کلام خودم را مثل آتشی در دهان تو خواهم گذاشت. مردم مثل هیزم هستند و آتش همهٔ آنها را می‌سوزاند.»

¹⁴Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

¹⁴ ای قوم اسرائیل، خداوند ملّتی را از مکانهای دور می‌آورد تا به شما حمله کنند. این ملّتی است قوی و قدیمی، ملّتی که زبان آن را تو نمی‌فهمی.

¹⁵Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.

¹⁵ کمانداران آنها جنگجویانی هستند بسیار قوی، که بدون ترّحم می‌کشند. آنها خرمن و آذوقهٔ تو را می‌بلعند و پسران و دختران تو را خواهند کشت.

¹⁶Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

¹⁶ آنها گلّه و رمهٔ تو را زنده نخواهند گذاشت. تاکستانها و درختان انجیر تو را از بین خواهند برد. شهرهای مستحکمی که به آنها اعتماد داری، همه به وسیلهٔ ارتش آنها خراب خواهند شد.

¹⁷And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

¹⁷ خداوند می‌گوید: «حتّی در چنان روزهایی نمی‌گذارم قوم من کاملاً از بین بروند.

¹⁸Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.

¹⁸ وقتی آنها بپرسند، چرا اجازه دادم چنین چیزهایی واقع شود، ای ارمیا، به آنها بگو که همان‌طور که آنها از من برگشته‌اند و در سرزمین خودشان در خدمت خدایان درآمدند، پس آنها در سرزمینی که به خودشان تعلّق نخواهد داشت در خدمت بیگانگان خواهند بود.»

¹⁹And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not your's.

¹⁹ خداوند می‌گوید: «به فرزندان یعقوب و به مردم یهودا بگو:

²⁰Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,

²⁰ ای قوم نادان و بی‌عقل توجّه کنید، شما که چشم دارید ولی نمی‌بینید، گوش دارید ولی نمی‌شنوید.

²¹Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:

²¹ من خداوند هستم؛ چرا حرمت مرا نگاه نمی‌دارید؟ چرا در حضور من از ترس نمی‌لرزید؟ من شن و ماسه را مرز دریا قرار دادم، مرزی که ‌آب دریا هیچ‌گاه از آن رد نمی‌شود. اگر دریا به تلاطم آید، نمی‌تواند از آن تجاوز کند و اگر امواج آن خروشان شوند، نمی‌توانند آن مرز را بشکنند.

²²Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

²² شما ای قوم من، سرسخت و سرکش هستید. شما برگشتید و مرا ترک کردید.

²³But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

²³ من برای شما بارانهای پاییزی و بهاری فرستادم و همه ساله فصل برداشت محصول را به شما دادم؛ با وجود این، هرگز به فکرتان نرسید که احترام مرا نگاه‌دارید.

²⁴Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

²⁴ در عوض، گناهان شما باعث شد این برکات به شما نرسد.

²⁵Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.

²⁵ «مردمان شریر در میان قوم من زندگی می‌کنند، آنها در کمین نشسته‌ و مانند کسانی‌که توری را برای شکار پرندگان گسترده باشند، منتظر می‌مانند. آنها دامهای خود را برای شکار مردم پهن کرده‌‌اند.

²⁶For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

²⁶ همان‌طور که یک شکارچی قفس خود را از پرنده‌ها پر می‌سازد، همان‌طور خانه‌های آنها از آنچه به یغما برده‌اند، انباشته شده است. به همین دلیل است که آنها قوی و غنی هستند.

²⁷As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.

²⁷ خوب می‌خورند و چاق می‌شوند. شرارتهای آنها پایانی ندارد. حق یتیمان را به آنها نمی‌دهند و مظلومان را از عدالت محروم می‌کنند.

²⁸They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

²⁸ «امّا من، خداوند، آنها را به مجازات کارهایشان خواهم رسانید. من از قوم انتقام خواهم گرفت.

²⁹Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

²⁹ اتّفاقی وحشتناک و تکان‌دهنده در این سرزمین روی داده است. انبیا چیزی جز دروغ نمی‌گویند، کاهنان طبق دستور انبیا حکومت می‌کنند و قوم من هم اعتراضی ندارند. عاقبت آنها چه خواهند کرد؟»

³⁰A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land;

³⁰ انبیا چیزی جز دروغ نمی‌گویند، کاهنان طبق دستور انبیا حکومت می‌کنند و قوم من هم اعتراضی ندارند. عاقبت آنها چه خواهند کرد؟»

³¹The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
