¹Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.

¹ به ادّعای خداوند برضد اسرائیل گوش بدهید: برخیز ای خداوند و ادّعای خود را ارائه فرما؛ بگذار که کوهها و تپّه‌ها سخن تو را بشنوند.

²Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD's controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.

² ای کوهها، ای بنیادهای جاودانی زمین، به ادّعای خداوند گوش بدهید! خداوند از قوم خود شکایت دارد و اسرائیل را متّهم می‌سازد.

³O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.

³ خداوند می‌فرماید: «ای قوم من، من به شما چه کرده‌ام؟ چرا از من خسته شده‌اید؟ پاسخ بدهید!

⁴For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.

⁴ من شما را از مصر بیرون آوردم و از بند بردگی و اسارت آزاد کردم. موسی، هارون و مریم را فرستادم تا شما را راهنمایی کنند.

⁵O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.

⁵ ای قوم من، به یاد آورید که بالاق، پادشاه موآب چه نقشه‌ای برای نابودی شما داشت و بلعام، پسر بعور به او چه پاسخ داد و از اقاقیا تا جلجال چه اتّفاق افتاد. اینها را به‌خاطر بیاورید تا بدانید که من برای نجات و سلامتی شما چه کارهایی کرده‌ام.»

⁶Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

⁶ با چه چیزی به درگاه خداوند متعال بیایم و او را سجده کنم؟ اگر بهترین گوسالهٔ یک ساله را جهت قربانی سوختنی بیاورم، آیا خداوند از من خشنود می‌شود؟

⁷Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

⁷ اگر هزاران قوچ و ده‌ها هزار نهر لبریز از روغن زیتون را هدیه کنم، آیا از من خشنود خواهد شد؟ اگر نخستزادهٔ خود را برای کفّارهٔ گناهِ خود قربانی کنم، آیا گناه مرا می‌بخشد؟

⁸He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

⁸ نی، خداوند به ما گفته است که نیکویی چیست و چیزی که از ما می‌خواهد این است که عدالت را بجا آوریم و محبّت پایدار داشته باشیم و با مشارکتی فروتنانه با خدای خود زندگی کنیم.

⁹The LORD's voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

⁹ خداوند در شهر ندا می‌دهد، شخص عاقل کسی است که از خداوند می‌ترسد. خداوند می‌فرماید: «ای مردمی که در شهر جمع شده‌اید، بشنوید!

¹⁰Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?

¹⁰ خانه‌های گناهکاران پُر از اموالی است که از راه دزدی و با ترازوی تقلّبی به دست آمده‌اند.

¹¹Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

¹¹ پس چطور می‌توانم این اشخاص را که از سنگ و ترازوی تقلّبی استفاده می‌کنند، ببخشم؟

¹²For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

¹² ثروتمندان شما به مردم ظلم می‌کنند، مردم شما دروغ می‌گویند و حرف راست از زبانشان شنیده نمی‌شود.

¹³Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.

¹³ بنابراین تصمیم گرفته‌ام که شما را به‌خاطر گناهانتان نابود کنم.

¹⁴Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.

¹⁴ هرقدر بخورید سیر نمی‌شوید و همیشه از گرسنگی رنج می‌برید. مال و ثروت ذخیره می‌کنید، امّا همه را از دست می‌دهید، زیرا آنچه را که جمع کرده‌اید در جنگ از بین می‌برم.

¹⁵Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.

¹⁵ می‌کارید، ولی درو نمی‌کنید. از زیتون روغن می‌کشید، امّا خودتان از آن استفاده نمی‌کنید. از انگور شراب می‌سازید، امّا از آن نخواهید نوشید، زیرا شما از کارهای عُمری پادشاه و پسرش اخاب پیروی می‌کنید. رسوم و کارهای آنها را سرمشق خود قرار می‌دهید. پس من شما را از بین می‌برم تا مردم جهان شما را تحقیر کنند و خوار و رسوا شوید.»

¹⁶For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

¹⁶ زیرا شما از کارهای عُمری پادشاه و پسرش اخاب پیروی می‌کنید. رسوم و کارهای آنها را سرمشق خود قرار می‌دهید. پس من شما را از بین می‌برم تا مردم جهان شما را تحقیر کنند و خوار و رسوا شوید.»
