¹A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

¹ نیکنامی از ثروت هنگفت بهتر است و محبوبیت از طلا و نقره.

²The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.

² فقیر و ثروتمند یک وجه مشترک دارند: هردوی آنها را خداوند آفریده است.

³A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

³ شخص باهوش خطر را می‌بیند و از آن دوری می‌کند، امّا آدم نادان به سوی آن می‌رود و خود را گرفتار می‌سازد.

⁴By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.

⁴ نتیجهٔ فروتنی و اطاعت از خداوند، ثروت و احترام و عمر طولانی است.

⁵Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.

⁵ راه شریران پر از خارها و دامهاست. اگر جان خود را دوست داری از رفتن به آن راه خودداری کن.

⁶Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

⁶ کودک را در راهی که باید برود، تربیت نما و او تا آخر عمر از آن منحرف نخواهد شد.

⁷The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

⁷ فقیر، اسیر ثروتمند است و کسی‌که قرض می‌گیرد، غلام قرض‌دهنده.

⁸He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

⁸ هر که ظلم بکارد، همان را درو خواهد کرد و قدرتش درهم خواهد شکست.

⁹He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

⁹ شخص سخاوتمند برکت خواهد یافت، چون خوراک خود را با فقرا تقسیم می‌کند.

¹⁰Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.

¹⁰ شخص مسخره‌کننده را بیرون انداز تا دشمنی و کشمکش و فحاشی خاتمه یابد.

¹¹He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

¹¹ کسی‌که قلب پاک و کلام دلنشین را دوست داشته باشد، حتّی پادشاه هم او را دوست خواهد داشت.

¹²The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.

¹² خداوند حافظ راستی است و سخنان دروغ را باطل می‌سازد.

¹³The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

¹³ آدم تنبل در خانه می‌ماند و می‌گوید: «اگر بیرون بروم، شیر مرا خواهد خورد.»

¹⁴The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.

¹⁴ سخنان زن بدکار مانند یک دام، خطرناک است و هرکسی که مورد غضب خداوند باشد، در آن گرفتار می‌شود.

¹⁵Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

¹⁵ حماقت در وجود کودک نهفته است، امّا تنبیه آن را از او بیرون می‌کند.

¹⁶He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.

¹⁶ کسی‌که به‌خاطر نفع خود به فقرا ظلم کند و به ثروتمندان هدیه بدهد، سرانجام گرفتار فقر خواهد شد.

¹⁷Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.

¹⁷ به سخنان مردان حکیم که به تو یاد می‌دهم، گوش بده و آنها را یاد بگیر،

¹⁸For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.

¹⁸ زیرا یادآوری و بیان آنها تو را شادمان می‌سازد.

¹⁹That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.

¹⁹ این سخنان را امروز به تو تعلیم می‌دهم تا اعتماد تو بر خداوند باشد.

²⁰Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

²⁰ من این سی مَثَل را که پر از حکمت و نصیحت است، برای تو نوشته‌ام

²¹That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?

²¹ تا حقیقت را همان‌طور که هست به تو یاد بدهم و تو نیز آن را به کسانی‌که از تو می‌پرسند، تعلیم دهی.

²²Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

²² به شخص فقیری که پشتیبانی ندارد، ظلم نکن و حق بیچارگان را در دادگاه پایمال نساز.

²³For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

²³ زیرا خداوند به داد آنها می‌رسد و کسانی را که به آنها ظلم کرده‌اند، به سزای کارهایشان می‌رساند.

²⁴Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:

²⁴ با اشخاص تندخو که زود خشمگین می‌شوند معاشرت نکن،

²⁵Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

²⁵ مبادا تو نیز مانند آنها شوی و زندگی خود را تباه کنی.

²⁶Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.

²⁶ ضامن کسی نشو و تعهّد نکن که او قرض خود را ادا خواهد کرد،

²⁷If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

²⁷ زیرا اگر مجبور به پرداخت قرض او شوی و نتوانی آن را بپردازی، رختخوابت را از زیرت بیرون می‌کشند.

²⁸Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

²⁸ حدود زمین خود را که اجدادت از قدیم تعیین کرده‌اند، به نفع خود تغییر نده. آیا شخصی را که در کار خود مهارت دارد، می‌بینی؟ او نزد مردمِ عادی باقی نخواهد ماند، بلکه در حضور پادشاهان خدمت خواهد کرد.

²⁹Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

²⁹ آیا شخصی را که در کار خود مهارت دارد، می‌بینی؟ او نزد مردمِ عادی باقی نخواهد ماند، بلکه در حضور پادشاهان خدمت خواهد کرد.
