¹When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

¹ وقتی با حاکم غذا می‌خوری، به‌خاطر داشته باش که با چه کسی نشسته‌ای.

²And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

² اگر شخص پُرخوری هستی، خودت را کنترل کن

³Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

³ و حریص غذاهای لذیذ او نباش، زیرا ممکن است تو را فریب بدهد.

⁴Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

⁴ عاقل باش و برای کسب ثروت، خود را خسته نکن،

⁵Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

⁵ زیرا ثروت پایدار نیست و مانند عقاب می‌پرد و ناپدید می‌شود.

⁶Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

⁶ از سفرهٔ شخص خسیس غذا نخور و برای خوراکهای لذیذ او حریص نباش،

⁷For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

⁷ زیرا او حساب هرچه را که بخوری در فکر خود نگاه می‌دارد. او تعارف می‌کند و می‌گوید: «بخور و بنوش»، امّا این را از صمیم دل نمی‌گوید.

⁸The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

⁸ لقمه‌ای را که خورده‌ای استفراغ خواهی کرد و تشکّرات تو برباد خواهد رفت.

⁹Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

⁹ آدم احمق را نصیحت نکن، زیرا او سخنان حکیمانهٔ تو را بی‌اهمیّت می‌شمارد.

¹⁰Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

¹⁰ حدود زمین خود را که از قدیم تعیین شده، تغییر نده و زمین یتیمان را بزور نگیر،

¹¹For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

¹¹ زیرا پشتیبان ایشان قوی است و به داد آنها می‌رسد.

¹²Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

¹² وقتی معلّم تو را تعلیم می‌دهد، از صمیم دل به سخنان آموزندهٔ او گوش بده.

¹³Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

¹³ از تأدیب کردن فرزند خویش کوتاهی نکن، زیرا تنبیه او را نمی‌کشد،

¹⁴Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

¹⁴ بلکه جان او را از هلاکت نجات می‌دهد.

¹⁵My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

¹⁵ فرزندم، اگر حکمت بیاموزی، دل من شاد می‌شود،

¹⁶Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

¹⁶ و هنگامی‌که سخن راست بگویی، تمام وجودم شادمان می‌گردد.

¹⁷Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

¹⁷ به شریران حسادت نورز، بلکه آرزوی تو اطاعت از خداوند باشد؛

¹⁸For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

¹⁸ زیرا در این صورت آیندهٔ خوبی خواهی داشت و امید تو برباد نخواهد رفت.

¹⁹Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

¹⁹ فرزندم، عاقل باش و به سخنانم گوش بده. در راه راست قدم بردار

²⁰Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

²⁰ و با میگساران و شکم‌پرستان معاشرت نکن،

²¹For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

²¹ زیرا کسانی‌که کارشان فقط خوردن و خوابیدن است، فقیر و محتاج می‌شوند.

²²Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

²² به نصیحت پدرت که تو را به وجود آورده است، گوش بده و مادرت را هنگامی‌که پیر می‌شود، خوار نشمار.

²³Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

²³ در پی حقیقت باش و حکمت و ادب و دانش را کسب کن و به هیچ قیمتی آنها را از دست نده.

²⁴The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

²⁴ فرزندی درستکار و دانا باش تا باعث خوشی و خشنودی پدر و مادرت شوی.

²⁵Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

²⁵ فرزندم، سخنان مرا بشنو و زندگی مرا سرمشق خود قرار ده.

²⁶My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

²⁶ بدان که زن بدکاره دام خطرناکی است.

²⁷For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

²⁷ او مانند راهزن در کمین قربانی‌های خود می‌نشیند و به تعداد مردم خیانتکار می‌افزاید.

²⁸She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

²⁸ مصیبت و بدبختی نصیب چه کسی می‌شود؟ چه کسی همیشه جنگ و دعوا برپا می‌کند؟ چه کسی بی‌جهت زخمی می‌شود و چشمانش تار می‌گردد؟

²⁹Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

²⁹ کسی‌که دایم شراب می‌خورد و به دنبال میگساری می‌رود.

³⁰They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

³⁰ پس فریفتهٔ شراب سرخ‌فام نشو که در جام به تو چشمک می‌زند و بعد آهسته از گلویت پایین می‌رود.

³¹Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

³¹ در آخر، همچون مار، تو را خواهد گزید و مانند افعی تو را نیش خواهد زد.

³²At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

³² چشمانت چیزهای عجیب و غریب می‌بینند و گرفتار وهم و خیال می‌گردی.

³³Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

³³ مانند کسی می‌شوی که در دریا خوابیده و با امواج آن دست و پنجه نرم می‌کند. می‌گویی: «مرا زدند، امّا دردی را احساس نمی‌کنم. چه وقت به هوش می‌آیم تا یک پیالهٔ دیگر بنوشم؟»

³⁴Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

³⁴ می‌گویی: «مرا زدند، امّا دردی را احساس نمی‌کنم. چه وقت به هوش می‌آیم تا یک پیالهٔ دیگر بنوشم؟»

³⁵They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
