¹Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

¹ دربارهٔ فردا، با غرور صحبت نکن، زیرا نمی‌دانی که فردا چه پیش خواهد آمد.

²Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

² هرگز از خودت تعریف نکن، بگذار دیگران از تو تعریف کنند.

³A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.

³ حمل بار سنگ و ریگ سخت است، امّا تحمّل سختی‌هایی که یک شخص احمق ایجاد می‌کند، از آن هم سخت‌تر است.

⁴Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

⁴ حسادت، خطرناکتر و بی‌رحمتر از خشم و غضب است.

⁵Open rebuke is better than secret love.

⁵ سرزنش آشکار از محبّت پنهان بهتر است.

⁶Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

⁶ زخم دوست بهتر از بوسهٔ دشمن است.

⁷The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

⁷ شکم سیر حتّی از عسل کراهت دارد، امّا برای شکم گرسنه هر چیزِ تلخ، شیرین است.

⁸As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

⁸ کسی‌که از خانهٔ خود دور می‌شود، همچون پرنده‌ای است که از آشیانهٔ خود، آواره شده باشد.

⁹Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

⁹ مشورت صمیمانهٔ یک دوست همچون عطری خوشبو، دلپذیر است.

¹⁰Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

¹⁰ دوست خود و دوست والدینت را هرگز ترک نکن، و وقتی‌که در سختی هستی، به سراغ خویشاوندت نرو. همسایهٔ نزدیک بهتر از خویشاوندی که از تو دور است، می‌تواند به تو کمک کند.

¹¹My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

¹¹ فرزندم، حکمت بیاموز و دل مرا شاد کن تا بتوانم جواب کسانی را که سرزنشم می‌کنند، بدهم.

¹²A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

¹² شخص زیرک، خطر را می‌بیند و از آن دوری می‌کند، امّا آدم جاهل به سوی آن می‌رود و خود را گرفتار می‌سازد.

¹³Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

¹³ از شخص احمقی که برای قرض بیگانه‌ای ضامن می‌شود، از اموالش چیزی را به گرو بگیر.

¹⁴He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

¹⁴ اگر صبح زود با دعای خیر دوستت را از خواب بیدار کنی، دعای تو همچون لعنت خواهد بود.

¹⁵A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

¹⁵ غرغرهای زن بهانه‌گیر مثل چک‌چک آب در روز بارانی است.

¹⁶Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.

¹⁶ همان‌طور که نمی‌توان از وزیدن باد جلوگیری کرد و یا با دستهای چرب چیزی را نگه داشت، جلوگیری از غرغر چنین زنی هم محال است.

¹⁷Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

¹⁷ همان‌طور که آهن، آهن را تیز می‌کند، دوست نیز شخصیّت دوست خود را اصلاح می‌کند.

¹⁸Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

¹⁸ هر که از درخت انجیر نگهداری کند، از میوه‌اش هم خواهد خورد، و هرکسی که به آقای خود خدمت کند، پاداش خدمت خود را خواهد گرفت.

¹⁹As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

¹⁹ همان‌طور که انسان در آب، روی خود را می‌بیند، در وجود دیگران نیز وجود خویش را مشاهده می‌کند.

²⁰Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

²⁰ همان‌طور که دنیای مردگان از بلعیدن زندگان سیر نمی‌شود، خواسته‌های انسان هم هرگز تمام شدنی نیست.

²¹As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

²¹ طلا و نقره را به وسیلهٔ آتش می‌آزمایند، امّا انسان را از عکس‌العملش در برابر تعریف و تمجید دیگران می‌توان شناخت.

²²Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

²² اگر شخص احمق را در هاون هم بکوبی، حماقتش از او جدا نمی‌شود.

²³Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

²³ مال و دارایی زود از بین می‌رود و تاج و تخت پادشاه تا ابد برای فرزندان او باقی نمی‌ماند. پس تو با دقّت از گلّه و رمه‌ات مواظبت کن.

²⁴For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?

²⁴ علف را درو کن و سپس علوفهٔ کوهستان را جمع‌آوری نما تا زمانی که محصول تازه به بار می‌آید

²⁵The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.

²⁵ آنگاه می‌توانی از پشم گوسفندانت لباس تهیّه کنی، از فروش بُزهایت زمین بخری و از شیر بقیّهٔ بُزهایت تو و خانواده و کنیزانت سیر خواهید شد.

²⁶The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

²⁶ و از شیر بقیّهٔ بُزهایت تو و خانواده و کنیزانت سیر خواهید شد.

²⁷And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.
