¹In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

¹ در ماه هشتم از سال دوم سلطنت داریوش شاهنشاه، پیامی از جانب خداوند بر زکریای نبی پسر برکیا و نوهٔ عدوی نبی آمد. خداوند به زکریا فرمود:

²The LORD hath been sore displeased with your fathers.

² «از طرف من به مردم بگو که من از نیاکان شما بسیار خشمگین بودم،

³Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.

³ امّا اکنون اگر به سوی من بازگردید، من نیز به سوی شما بازمی‌گردم.

⁴Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD.

⁴ مانند اجداد خود نباشید که انبیای پیشین پیام مرا به آنها دادند تا از راهی که در پیش گرفته بودند بازگردند و از کارهای زشت خود دست بکشند، ولی به حرف آنها گوش ندادند و از من اطاعت نکردند.

⁵Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

⁵ اجداد شما و انبیای پیشین دیگر زنده نیستند.

⁶But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

⁶ امّا کلام و احکام من ابدی و جاودانی است. احکام و دستورات خود را که توسط بندگانم یعنی انبیا، به نیاکان شما دادم، ولی آنها توجّهی نکردند در نتیجه متحمّل عذاب شدند. سرانجام آنها توبه کردند و گفتند: 'خداوند متعال ما را به سزای کارهای ما رسانید و هشدارهایی را که به ما داده بود عملی کرد.'»

⁷Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

⁷ در روز بیست و چهارم ماه یازدهم، یعنی ماه شباط، در دومین سال سلطنت داریوش، در رؤیای شب پیام دیگری از جانب خداوند به زکریا رسید.

⁸I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.

⁸ در درّه‌‌ای، در بین درختان، فرشته‌ای را سوار بر اسبی سرخ رنگ دیدم. پشت سر او اسبهایی به رنگهای قرمز، زرد و سفید ایستاده بودند.

⁹Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.

⁹ از فرشته پرسیدم: «ای آقای من، این اسبها برای چه هستند؟» او جواب داد: «من به تو نشان می‌دهم.»

¹⁰And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

¹⁰ سپس فرشته به من گفت که خداوند آنها را فرستاده است تا زمین را تفتیش کنند.

¹¹And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

¹¹ آنگاه اسب سواران به فرشتهٔ خداوند که در میان درختان ایستاده بود، گزارش داده گفتند: «ما سراسر روی زمین را تفتیش کردیم و دیدیم که در همه‌جا امنیّت و آرامش برقرار است.»

¹²Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

¹² فرشتهٔ خداوند وقتی این را شنید گفت: «ای خداوند متعال، مدّت هفتاد سال از اورشلیم و شهرهای یهودا خشمگین بودی؛ تا به کی رحمت خود را از آنها دریغ می‌کنی؟»

¹³And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

¹³ خداوند با مهربانی و سخنان تسلّی‌آمیز به فرشته پاسخ داد.

¹⁴So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

¹⁴ آنگاه فرشته به من گفت: «این پیام خداوند متعال را اعلام کن که می‌فرماید: من به اورشلیم و کوه مقدّس شفقت زیادی دارم.

¹⁵And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

¹⁵ امّا از اقوامی که در رفاه و آسایش زندگی می‌کنند، سخت خشمگین می‌باشم زیرا آنها زیادتر از آنچه که من می‌خواستم بر قوم من ظلم نمودند.

¹⁶Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

¹⁶ بنابراین من با رحمت و شفقت بیشتر به اورشلیم بازمی‌گردم و خانهٔ من و تمام شهر اورشلیم بازسازی می‌شوند.»

¹⁷Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

¹⁷ آن فرشته به من گفت که اعلام کنم: «خداوند متعال می‌گوید که شهرهای او دوباره کامیاب خواهند شد و او بار دیگر اورشلیم را کمک خواهد کرد و آن شهر را دوباره شهر خود خواهد خواند.»

¹⁸Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.

¹⁸ در رؤیای دیگر چهار شاخ گاو دیدم.

¹⁹And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.

¹⁹ از فرشته پرسیدم: «اینها چه هستند؟» او پاسخ داد: «اینها نمایندهٔ قدرتهای جهان هستند که مردم یهودا، اسرائیل و اورشلیم را پراکنده ساخته‌اند.»

²⁰And the LORD shewed me four carpenters.

²⁰ بعد خداوند چهار آهنگر را به من نشان داد. پرسیدم: «اینها برای چه کاری آمده‌اند؟» او در پاسخ فرمود: «اینها آمده‌اند تا آن چهار شاخی را که باعث پراکندگی مردم یهودا شده‌اند و به آنها ستم کرده‌اند، به وحشت بیاندازند و قدرتشان را از بین ببرند.»

²¹Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.

²¹ پرسیدم: «اینها برای چه کاری آمده‌اند؟» او در پاسخ فرمود: «اینها آمده‌اند تا آن چهار شاخی را که باعث پراکندگی مردم یهودا شده‌اند و به آنها ستم کرده‌اند، به وحشت بیاندازند و قدرتشان را از بین ببرند.»
