¹Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

¹Omul născut din femeie, are viaţa scurtă, dar plină de necazuri.

²He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

²Se naşte şi e tăiat ca o floare; fuge şi piere ca o umbră.

³And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

³Şi asupra lui ai Tu ochiul deschis! Şi pe mine mă tragi la judecată cu Tine!

⁴Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

⁴Cum ar putea să iasă dintr'o fiinţă necurată un om curat? Nu poate să iasă niciunul.

⁵Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

⁵Dacă zilele lui sînt hotărîte, dacă i-ai numărat lunile, dacă i-ai însemnat hotarul pe care nu -l va putea trece,

⁶Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

⁶întoarce-Ţi măcar privirile dela el, şi dă -i răgaz, să aibă măcar bucuria pe care o are simbriaşul la sfîrşitul zilei.

⁷For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

⁷Un copac, şi tot are nădejde: căci cînd este tăiat, odrăsleşte din nou, şi iar dă lăstari.

⁸Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

⁸Cînd i -a îmbătrînit rădăcina în pămînt, cînd îi piere trunchiul în ţărînă,

⁹Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

⁹înverzeşte iarăş de mirosul apei, şi dă ramuri de parcă ar fi sădit din nou.

¹⁰But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

¹⁰Dar omul cînd moare, rămîne întins; omul, cînd îşi dă sufletul, unde mai este?

¹¹As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

¹¹Cum pier apele din lacuri, şi cum seacă şi se usucă rîurile,

¹²So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

¹²aşa se culcă şi omul şi nu se mai scoală; cît vor fi cerurile, nu se mai deşteaptă, şi nu se mai scoală din somnul lui.

¹³O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

¹³Ah! de m'ai ascunde în locuinţa morţilor, de m'ai acoperi pînă-Ţi va trece mînia, şi de mi-ai rîndui o vreme cînd Îţi vei aduce iarăş aminte de mine!

¹⁴If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

¹⁴Dacă omul odată mort ar putea să mai învieze, aş mai trage nădejde în tot timpul suferinţelor mele, pînă mi se va schimba starea în care mă găsesc.

¹⁵Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

¹⁵Atunci m'ai chema, şi Ţi-aş răspunde, şi Ţi-ar fi dor de făptura mînilor Tale.

¹⁶For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

¹⁶Dar astăzi îmi numeri paşii, ai ochiul asupra păcatelor mele;

¹⁷My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

¹⁷călcările mele de lege sînt pecetluite într'un mănunchi, şi născoceşti fărădelegi în sarcina mea.

¹⁸And surely the mountains falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

¹⁸Cum se prăbuşeşte muntele şi piere, cum piere stînca din locul ei,

¹⁹The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

¹⁹cum este mîncată piatra de ape, şi cum este luat pămîntul de rîu: aşa nimiceşti Tu nădejdea omului.

²⁰Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

²⁰Îl urmăreşti într'una, şi se duce; Îi schimonoseşti faţa, şi apoi îi dai drumul.

²¹His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

²¹De ajung fiii lui la cinste, el nu ştie nimic; de sînt înjosiţi, habar n'are.

²²But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

²²Numai pentru el simte durere în trupul lui, numai pentru el simte întristare în sufletul lui.``
