¹Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

¹Elifaz din Teman a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis:

²Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

²,,Se cade să dea înţeleptul ca răspuns înţelepciune deşartă? Sau să-şi umfle pieptul cu vînt de răsărit?

³Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

³Să se apere prin cuvinte cari n'ajută la nimic, şi prin cuvîntări cari nu slujesc la nimic?

⁴Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

⁴Tu nimiceşti chiar şi frica de Dumnezeu, nimiceşti orice simţire de evlavie faţă de Dumnezeu.

⁵For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

⁵Nelegiuirea ta îţi cîrmuieşte gura, şi împrumuţi vorbirea oamenilor vicleni.

⁶Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

⁶Nu eu, ci gura ta te osîndeşte, buzele tale mărturisesc împotriva ta.

⁷Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

⁷Tu eşti omul care s'a născut întîi? Te-ai născut tu înaintea dealurilor?

⁸Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

⁸Ai fost tu la sfaturile lui Dumnezeu; şi ai sorbit din ele înţelepciune pentru tine?

⁹What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

⁹Ce ştii tu şi să nu ştim şi noi? Ce cunoştinţă ai tu pe care să n'o avem şi noi?

¹⁰With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

¹⁰Între noi sînt peri albi, bătrîni, oameni mai înziliţi decît tatăl tău.

¹¹Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

¹¹Puţin lucru sînt mîngîierile lui Dumnezeu pentru tine, şi cuvintele cari-ţi vorbesc atît de blînd?...

¹²Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

¹²Încotro te trage inima, şi ce înseamnă această privire ţintă a ochilor tăi?

¹³That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

¹³Ce! împotriva lui Dumnezeu îţi îndrepţi tu mînia, şi-ţi ies din gură cuvinte ca acestea?

¹⁴What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

¹⁴,Ce este omul, ca să fie curat? Şi poate cel născut din femeie să fie fără prihană?

¹⁵Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

¹⁵Dacă n'are încredere Dumnezeu nici în sfinţii Săi, dacă nici cerurile nu sînt curate înaintea Lui,

¹⁶How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

¹⁶cu cît mai puţin fiinţa urîcioasă şi stricată-omul, care bea nelegiuirea ca apa!

¹⁷I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

¹⁷Vreau să te învăţ, ascultă-mă! Voi istorisi ce am văzut,

¹⁸Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

¹⁸ce au arătat înţelepţii, ce au descoperit ei, auzind dela părinţii lor,

¹⁹Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

¹⁹cărora singuri li se dăduse ţara, şi printre cari nici un străin nu venise încă.

²⁰The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

²⁰,Omul cel rău îşi duce în nelinişte toate zilele vieţii, toţi anii de cari are parte cel nelegiuit.

²¹A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

²¹Ţipete de spaimă răsună la urechile lui: În mijlocul fericirii lui, pustiitorul se va arunca asupra lui.

²²He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

²²El nu trage nădejde să scape de întunerec, vede sabia care -l ameninţă;

²³He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

²³aleargă încoace şi încolo să caute pîne, ştie că -l aşteaptă ziua întunerecului.

²⁴Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

²⁴Necazul şi neliniştea îl înspăimîntă, şi se aruncă asupra lui ca un împărat gata de luptă.

²⁵For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

²⁵Căci a ridicat mîna împotriva lui Dumnezeu, s'a împotrivit Celui Atot Puternic,

²⁶He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

²⁶şi a avut îndrăzneala să se năpustească asupra Lui cu partea cea mai tare a scuturilor lui.

²⁷Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

²⁷Avea faţa acoperită cu grăsime, coapsele încărcate cu osînză,

²⁸And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

²⁸şi locuia în cetăţi nimicite, în case părăsite, sortite să fie dărîmate.

²⁹He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

²⁹Nu se va mai îmbogăţi, averea nu -i va creşte, şi avuţia nu se va mai întinde pe pămînt.

³⁰He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

³⁰Nu va putea ieşi din întunerec, flacăra îi va arde mlădiţele, şi Dumnezeu îl va pierde cu suflarea gurii Lui.

³¹Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

³¹Dacă se încrede în rău, se înşeală, căci răul îi va fi răsplata.

³²It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

³²Ea va veni înainte de capătul zilelor lui, şi ramura lui nu va mai înverzi.

³³He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

³³Va fi ca o viţă despoiată de roadele ei încă verzi, ca un măslin ale cărui flori au căzut.

³⁴For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

³⁴Căci casa celui nelegiuit va ajunge stearpă, şi cortul omului stricat îl va mînca focul.

³⁵They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

³⁵El zămisleşte răul şi naşte răul: în sînul lui coace roade cari -l înşeală.```
