¹My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

¹Fiule, păstrează cuvintele mele, şi ţine la tine sfaturile mele.

²Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

²Ţine sfaturile mele, şi vei trăi; păzeşte învăţăturile mele ca lumina ochilor.

³Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

³Leagă-le la degete, scrie-le pe tăbliţa inimii tale.

⁴Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:

⁴Zi înţelepciunii: ,,Tu eşti sora mea!`` Şi numeşte priceperea prietena ta, -

⁵That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

⁵ca să te ferească de nevasta altuia, de străina care întrebuinţează cuvinte ademenitoare.

⁶For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,

⁶Stăteam la fereastra casei mele, şi mă uitam prin zăbrele.

⁷And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

⁷Am zărit printre cei neîncercaţi, am văzut printre tineri pe un băiat fără minte.

⁸Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

⁸Trecea pe uliţă, la colţul unde stătea una din aceste străine, şi a apucat pe calea care ducea spre locuinţa ei.

⁹In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:

⁹Era în amurg, seara, în noaptea neagră şi întunecoasă.

¹⁰And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.

¹⁰Şi, iată că, i -a alergat înainte o femeie îmbrăcată ca o curvă şi cu inima şireată.

¹¹(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:

¹¹Era bună de gură şi fără astîmpăr; picioarele nu -i puteau sta acasă:

¹²Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)

¹²cînd în uliţă, cînd în pieţe, pela toate colţurile stătea la pîndă.

¹³So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

¹³Ea l -a îmbrăţişat şi l -a sărutat, şi cu o faţă fără ruşine i -a zis:

¹⁴I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.

¹⁴,,Eram datoare cu o jertfă de mulţămire, azi mi-am împlinit juruinţele.

¹⁵Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

¹⁵De aceea ţi-am ieşit înainte, să te caut, şi te-am şi găsit.

¹⁶I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.

¹⁶Mi-am împodobit patul cu învelitori, cu aşternut de pînzeturi din Egipt;

¹⁷I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

¹⁷mi-am stropit aşternutul cu smirnă, aloe şi scorţişoară.

¹⁸Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.

¹⁸Vino, să ne îmbătăm de dragoste pînă dimineaţă, să ne desfătăm cu desmierdări!

¹⁹For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:

¹⁹Căci bărbatul meu nu este acasă, a plecat într'o călătorie lungă,

²⁰He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.

²⁰a luat cu el sacul cu bani, şi nu se va întoarce acasă decît la luna nouă.``

²¹With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

²¹Tot vorbindu -i, ea l -a ademenit, şi l -a atras cu buzele ei ademenitoare.

²²He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

²²De odată a început să meargă după ea, ca boul care se duce la măcelărie, ca un cerb care aleargă spre cursă,

²³Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

²³ca pasărea care dă buzna în laţ, fără să ştie că o va costa viaţa, pînă ce săgeata îi străpunge ficatul.

²⁴Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

²⁴Şi acum, fiilor, ascultaţi-mă, şi luaţi aminte la cuvintele gurii mele.

²⁵Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

²⁵Să nu ţi se abată inima spre calea unei asemenea femei, nu te rătăci pe cărările ei.

²⁶For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

²⁶Căci ea a făcut să cadă multe jertfe, şi mulţi sînt cei pe cari i -a ucis ea.

²⁷Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

²⁷Casa ei este drumul spre locuinţa morţilor, drumul care pogoară spre locaşurile morţii.
