¹Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

¹Tedaj odgovori Elifaz Temančan in reče:

²Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

²Bo li moder mož odgovarjal z vetrovitim znanjem in napihoval notranjščino svojo z vzhodnim vetrom,

³Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

³prepirajoč se z govori, ki ničesar ne pospešujejo, in z besedami, s katerimi nič ne koristi?

⁴Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

⁴Res, v nič devaš bogaboječnost in kratiš molitev pred Bogom.

⁵For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

⁵Kajti krivičnost tvoja ti poučuje usta, in voliš govor prekanjencev.

⁶Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

⁶Tvoja usta te obsojajo, ne jaz, in ustne tvoje pričajo zoper tebe.

⁷Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

⁷Si li ti prvi človek, ki se je rodil, ali si bil ustvarjen, preden so bili hribi?

⁸Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

⁸Si li poslušal v tajnem svetu Božjem in zase pokupil vso modrost?

⁹What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

⁹Kaj ti veš, česar mi ne vemo, kaj razumeš, in nam ni znano?

¹⁰With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

¹⁰Med nami so i osiveli i starčki, številnejših dni nego tvoj oče!

¹¹Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

¹¹Ali so ti malovažne tolažitve Božje in pohlevna beseda do tebe ti je li ničvredna?

¹²Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

¹²Kaj ti je ujelo srce in zakaj se iskrijo oči tvoje?

¹³That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

¹³da obračaš zoper Boga mogočnega togoto svojo in take besede bruhaš iz svojih ust?

¹⁴What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

¹⁴Kaj je smrtnik, da bi bil čist, in rojeni od žene, da bi bil pravičen?

¹⁵Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

¹⁵Glej, svetnikom svojim ne upa in nebesa niso čista v njegovih očeh!

¹⁶How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

¹⁶Koliko manj ostudnež in popačenec, mož, ki pije krivico kakor vodo!

¹⁷I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

¹⁷Naj ti povem, poslušaj me, in kar sem videl, ti bom pripovedoval,

¹⁸Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

¹⁸kar so modri oznanjali in niso zakrivali, sprejemši to od očetov svojih,

¹⁹Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

¹⁹ki je njim samim bila izročena dežela in tujec ni prešel sredi njih –:

²⁰The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

²⁰Vse svoje žive dni se zvija brezbožnik v mukah in majhno število let je prihranjeno silovitežu.

²¹A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

²¹Groze glas mu doni po ušesih; ko je mir, prihruje naj pogubnik;

²²He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

²²nima nade, da se vrne iz temine, in namerjen nanj ga čaka meč.

²³He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

²³Blodi okrog zaradi kruha, govoreč: Kje ga dobim? Ve, da blizu njega je pripravljen dan teme.

²⁴Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

²⁴Bridkost in stiska ga plašita, premagujeta ga kakor kralj, ki je pripravljen za naskok.

²⁵For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

²⁵Ker je iztegnil roko zoper Boga mogočnega in je prevzetoval proti Vsegamogočnemu,

²⁶He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

²⁶zaletaval se je vanj z vzpetim vratom, z debelimi grbami ščitov svojih;

²⁷Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

²⁷ker se je obraz njegov pokril z mastjo, na ledjih se mu je nabrala tolšča,

²⁸And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

²⁸in prebival je v porušenih mestih, v hišah, v katerih bi se ne bilo smelo stanovati, ki zanje je določeno, da ostanejo v razvalinah:

²⁹He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

²⁹zato ne obogati, imetje njegovo ne ostane in posestvo njegovo se ne razširi v deželi.

³⁰He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

³⁰Ne uteče iz temine, plamen posuši mladike njegove, in on izgine od diha iz ust Njegovih. –

³¹Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

³¹Naj se ne zanaša na laž, prevaran bo, kajti prevara mu bo v povračilo.

³²It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

³²Še preden pride dan njegov, se to dopolni, in palmova mladika mu več ne ozeleni;

³³He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

³³bode kakor trta, ki trebi kislo grozdje svoje, in kakor oljka, ki stresa cvetje svoje.

³⁴For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

³⁴Kajti družina bogapozabnikova je nerodovitna, in ogenj pokonča podkupljivčev šator.Bogapozabniki nosijo nadlogo, rode krivico, njih srce pripravlja prevaro.

³⁵They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
