¹Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

¹Tedaj odgovori Elifaz Temančan in reče:

²Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

²More li mož koristiti Bogu mogočnemu? Marveč sebi koristi razumnik.

³Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

³Hasni li Vsegamogočnemu, da si pravičen, ali pa ima kaj dobička, ko brezmadežne hraniš poti svoje?

⁴Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

⁴Je li zaradi tvoje bogaboječnosti, da te svari, s teboj hodi v pravdo?

⁵Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

⁵Ali ni velika tvoja hudobnost in krivic tvojih ni li brez konca?

⁶For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

⁶Brate svoje si rubil brez vzroka in polunagim si slekel obleko.

⁷Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

⁷Utrujenega nisi napojil z vodo in lačnemu si odrekel kruh.

⁸But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

⁸A siloviti mož si je lastil deželo, in imenitnik je prebival v njej.

⁹Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁹Vdove si pošiljal prazne od sebe, in rame sirot so bile strte.

¹⁰Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

¹⁰Zato je okrog tebe zadrga za zadrgo in plaši te nagel strah.

¹¹Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

¹¹Ali pa ne vidiš temine in povodnji, ki te zagrinja?

¹²Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

¹²Ni li Bog visok kakor nebesa? Poglej le najvišje zvezde, kako so vzvišene!

¹³And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

¹³A ti praviš: Kaj bi vedel Bog mogočni? more li skozi oblačno temino soditi?

¹⁴Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

¹⁴Oblačje Mu je ovoj, da ne vidi, in po okrožju nebes se izprehaja.

¹⁵Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

¹⁵Hočeš se li držati davnega veka steze, po kateri so hodili hudobni,

¹⁶Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:

¹⁶ki so bili odpravljeni pred svojim časom? njih trdna tla so se razlila kakor reka –

¹⁷Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

¹⁷ki so rekali Bogu mogočnemu: Pojdi od nas! in: Kaj more pač Vsemogočni storiti za nas?

¹⁸Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁸In vendar je On napolnil njih hiše z blaginjo! – Toda svetovanje brezbožnih bodi daleč od mene!

¹⁹The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

¹⁹Pravični to vidijo in se vesele, in nedolžni jih zasmehuje,

²⁰Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

²⁰govoreč: Res, iztrebljeni so, ki so se vzpenjali zoper nas, in ogenj je požrl, kar je ostalo za njimi.

²¹Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

²¹Sprijazni se, pravim, ž Njim in imej mir, in blagostanje ti s tem pride.

²²Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

²²Sprejmi vendar pouk iz ust Njegovih in vtisni si besede Njegove v srce!

²³If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

²³Ako se obrneš k Vsemogočnemu, te zopet ustanovi, če odpraviš nepravičnost iz šatorov svojih.

²⁴Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

²⁴In vrzi v prah drago kovino in med kamenčke v potoku ofirsko zlato:

²⁵Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

²⁵potem bode Vsemogočni zaklad tvoj in drago srebro tebi.

²⁶For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

²⁶Kajti tedaj se boš razveseljeval Vsemogočnega in k Bogu povzdigneš obličje svoje.

²⁷Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

²⁷Molil boš k njemu, in te usliši, in obljube svoje boš opravljal.

²⁸Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

²⁸Ko ukreneš kako stvar, se ti uresniči, in luč ti bo sijala nad poti tvojimi.

²⁹When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

²⁹Ko bodo vodile doli, boš velel: Navzgor! in ponižanemu daje Bog pomoč.Rešil bo tudi njega, ki ni brez krivde, da, rešen bo po čistosti tvojih rok.

³⁰He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
