¹Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

³It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

⁴That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

⁵THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

⁵Bil je v dneh Heroda, kralja judejskega, duhovnik po imenu Zaharija, iz vrste Abijeve, in ženo je imel iz hčerá Aronovih, in ime ji je bilo Elizabeta.

⁶And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁶Bila sta pa oba pravična pred Bogom, živeč po vseh zapovedih in postavah Gospodovih brez madeža.

⁷And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

⁷In nista imela otrok, ker je bila Elizabeta nerodovitna, in oba sta se že bila postarala.

⁸And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

⁸Zgodi se pa, ko je po redu vrste svoje opravljal duhovsko službo pred Bogom,

⁹According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

⁹da ga zadene žreb, naj zažge kadilo, ko vstopi v svetišče Gospodovo.

¹⁰And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

¹⁰In vsa množica ljudstva je bila zunaj in je molila ob uri kajenja.

¹¹And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

¹¹Prikaže pa se mu angel Gospodov, stoječ na desni strani kadilnega oltarja.

¹²And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

¹²In Zaharija se ustraši, ko ga zagleda, in groza ga obide.

¹³But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

¹³Angel mu pa reče: Ne boj se, Zaharija, kajti uslišana je molitev tvoja, in žena tvoja Elizabeta ti porodi sina, in imenuj ime njegovo Janez.

¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

¹⁴In on ti bo v radost in veselje, in veliko se jih bo radovalo rojstva njegovega.

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

¹⁵Kajti velik bo pred Gospodom; in vina in močne pijače ne bo pil in s svetim Duhom bo napolnjen že od materinega telesa.

¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

¹⁶In veliko sinov Izraelovih bo izpreobrnil h Gospodu, njih Bogu.

¹⁷And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

¹⁷Pojde namreč pred njim v duhu in moči Elijevi, da obrne srca očetov k otrokom in nepokorne k razumnosti pravičnih, da postavi Gospodu ljudstvo pripravljeno.

¹⁸And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

¹⁸Pa reče Zaharija angelu: Po čem naj spoznam to? Jaz sem vendar starec in moja žena je že priletna.

¹⁹And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

¹⁹In angel odgovori in mu reče: Jaz sem Gabriel, ki stojim pred obličjem Božjim in sem poslan, naj govorim s teboj in ti oznanim to veselo vest.

²⁰And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

²⁰In glej molčal boš in ne boš mogel govoriti do dne, ko se to zgodi, ker nisi veroval besedam mojim, ki se izpolnijo v svojem času.

²¹And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

²¹In ljudstvo je čakalo Zaharija, in čudili so se, da se tako dolgo mudi v svetišču.

²²And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

²²Ko pa pride ven, ne more jim govoriti, in spoznajo, da je videl prikazen v svetišču; a on jim le namigava in ostane nem.

²³And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

²³In zgodi se, ko se dopolnijo dnevi službe njegove, da odide na dom svoj.

²⁴And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

²⁴A po teh dneh spočne Elizabeta, žena njegova, in se skriva pet mesecev,

²⁵Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

²⁵govoreč: Tako mi je storil Gospod v dneh, ko se je ozrl name, da me reši sramote moje med ljudmi.

²⁶And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁶V šestem mesecu pa pošlje Bog angela Gabriela v mesto galilejsko, ki mu je ime Nazaret,

²⁷To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

²⁷k devici, zaročeni možu, ki mu je bilo ime Jožef, iz hiše Davidove, in devici je bilo ime Marija.

²⁸And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

²⁸In angel pride k njej in reče: Zdrava, z milostjo obdarovana! Gospod je s teboj, blagoslovljena si med ženami.

²⁹And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

²⁹Ona pa se prestraši besede njegove in premišljuje, kakšen bi bil ta pozdrav.

³⁰And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

³⁰In angel reče: Ne boj se, Marija, kajti našla si milost pri Bogu.

³¹And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

³¹In glej, spočela boš v telesu in rodila sina, in imenuj ime njegovo Jezus.

³²He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

³²Ta bode velik in Sin Najvišjega se bo imenoval; in Gospod Bog mu bo dal prestol Davida, očeta njegovega,

³³And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

³³in kraljeval bo v hiši Jakobovi vekomaj in kraljestvu njegovemu ne bo konca.

³⁴Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

³⁴Marija pa reče angelu: Kako bo to, ko moža ne poznam?

³⁵And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

³⁵In angel odgovori in ji reče: Sveti Duh pride nadte in moč Najvišjega te obsenči; zato se bo Sveto, ki se porodi, imenovalo Sin Božji.

³⁶And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

³⁶In glej Elizabeta sorodnica tvoja, tudi ona je spočela sina v starosti svoji; in ta mesec je šesti njej, ki jo imenujejo nerodovitno.

³⁷For with God nothing shall be impossible.

³⁷Kajti nobene besede ne bo pri Bogu, ki se ne bi mogla izpolniti.

³⁸And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

³⁸Marija pa reče: Glej, dekla sem Gospodova; zgodi se mi po besedi tvoji! In angel odide od nje.

³⁹And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

³⁹Odpravi pa se Marija te dni in gre jadrno v gore, v mesto Judovo,

⁴⁰And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

⁴⁰ter pride v hišo Zaharijevo in pozdravi Elizabeto.

⁴¹And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

⁴¹In zgodi se, ko začuje Elizabeta pozdrav Marijin, da zaigra dete v telesu njenem; in Elizabeta se napolni svetega Duha

⁴²And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

⁴²in zakliče z močnim glasom in reče: Blagoslovljena si ti med ženami, in blagoslovljen je sad telesa tvojega.

⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

⁴³In odkod meni to, da je prišla Gospoda mojega mati k meni?

⁴⁴For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

⁴⁴Kajti, glej, ko je prišel glas pozdrava tvojega v ušesa moja, je veselja zaigralo dete v telesu mojem.

⁴⁵And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

⁴⁵In blagor ji, ki je verovala, ker se dopolni, kar ji je rekel Gospod.

⁴⁶And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

⁴⁶In Marija reče: Duša moja poveličuje Gospoda,

⁴⁷And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

⁴⁷in duh moj se je razveselil v Bogu, Zveličarju mojem,

⁴⁸For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

⁴⁸ker se je ozrl na nizkost dekle svoje. Kajti glej, odslej me bodo blagrovali vsi rodovi,

⁴⁹For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

⁴⁹ker mi je storil velike reči on, ki je mogočen, in sveto je ime njegovo,

⁵⁰And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

⁵⁰in usmiljenje njegovo traja od roda do roda tistim, ki se ga bojé.

⁵¹He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁵¹Pokazal je moč z roko svojo, razkropil je ošabne v misli njih srca.

⁵²He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

⁵²Pahnil je mogočnike s prestola in ponižne je povišal.

⁵³He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

⁵³Lačne je nasitil z dobrimi rečmi in bogate je odpravil prazne.

⁵⁴He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

⁵⁴Sprejel je Izraela, hlapca svojega, da se spomni usmiljenja svojega,

⁵⁵As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

⁵⁵Kakor je govoril očetom našim, Abrahamu in semenu njegovemu na vekomaj.

⁵⁶And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

⁵⁶Marija pa ostane pri njej kake tri mesece, in se vrne na svoj dom.

⁵⁷Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁷A Elizabeti se dopolni čas, da porodi, in rodi sina.

⁵⁸And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁸In njeni sosedje in sorodniki zaslišijo, da je poveličal Gospod usmiljenje svoje na njej, in se radujejo ž njo.

⁵⁹And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

⁵⁹In zgodi se osmi dan, da pridejo obrezovat dete in ga kličejo po imenu očeta njegovega, Zaharija.

⁶⁰And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

⁶⁰A mati njegova odgovori in reče: Ne, ampak Janez se bo imenoval.

⁶¹And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

⁶¹In reko ji: Saj ni nikogar v sorodstvu tvojem, ki bi mu bilo tako ime.

⁶²And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

⁶²In pomignejo očetu njegovemu, kako hoče, da bi ga imenovali.

⁶³And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

⁶³In veli si dati tablico in napiše takole: Janez mu je ime. In vsi se začudijo.

⁶⁴And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

⁶⁴In pri tej priči se odpro usta njegova in jezik se mu razveže, in govori, hvaleč Boga.

⁶⁵And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

⁶⁵In strah obide vse njih sosede in po vsem Judejskem pogorju se pripoveduje o vseh teh rečeh.

⁶⁶And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁶In vsi, ki jih slišijo, si jih vtisnejo v srce, govoreč: Kaj neki bo iz tega deteta? Zakaj roka Gospodova je bila ž njim.

⁶⁷And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁷In Zaharija, oče njegov, se napolni svetega Duha in prorokuje, govoreč:

⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

⁶⁸Hvaljen Gospod, Bog Izraelov, ki je obiskal ljudstvo svoje in mu pripravil odrešenje,

⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

⁶⁹in nam povzdignil rog zveličanja v hiši Davida, služabnika svojega,

⁷⁰As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

⁷⁰(kakor je govoril z usti svetih prorokov svojih, ki so bili od nekdaj),

⁷¹That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

⁷¹rešitev od sovražnikov naših in iz rok vseh, ki nas mrze;

⁷²To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

⁷²da izkaže usmiljenje očetom našim in se spomni svete zaveze svoje,

⁷³The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

⁷³prisege, ki jo je prisegel Abrahamu, očetu našemu,

⁷⁴That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

⁷⁴da nam bo dal, da mu, rešeni iz rok sovražnikov svojih, služimo brez straha

⁷⁵In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

⁷⁵v svetosti in pravičnosti pred njim vse svoje žive dni.

⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

⁷⁶In ti, dete, se boš imenovalo prorok Najvišjega; kajti pojdeš pred obličjem Gospodovim, da mu pripraviš poti

⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

⁷⁷in daš ljudstvu njegovemu spoznanje zveličanja, ki je v odpuščenju njih grehov,

⁷⁸Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

⁷⁸po prisrčnem usmiljenju Boga našega, po katerem, nas je obiskal Vzhod z višave,

⁷⁹To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

⁷⁹da obsije tiste, ki sedé v temi in v senci smrti, da vodi noge naše na pot miru.Dete pa je raslo in se krepilo v duhu, in v puščavi je bilo do dne, ko se pokaže Izraelu.

⁸⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
