²Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

³I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

³Zahvaljujem se Bogu svojemu, kadarkoli se vas spominjam,

⁴Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

⁴vedno v sleherni molitvi za vas vse, ko opravljam molitev z veseljem,

⁵For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

⁵da ste se udeleževali širjenja evangelija od prvega do današnjega dne,

⁶Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

⁶ker sem prepričan prav o tem, da on, ki je začel v vas dobro delo, ga dokonča do dne Jezusa Kristusa;

⁷Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

⁷kakor je tudi meni spodobno, misliti to za vas vse, ker vas imam v srcu svojem kot take, ki ste vsi i v sponah mojih i v zagovarjanju in utrjevanju evangelija sodeležniki milosti z menoj.

⁸For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

⁸Kajti priča mi je Bog, kako hrepenim po vas vseh v srčni ljubezni Kristusa Jezusa.

⁹And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

⁹In za to molim, da naj ljubezen vaša še bolj in bolj raste v spoznanju in slehernem razumu,

¹⁰That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

¹⁰da presojate, kaj je boljše in kaj ne; da bodete čisti in brez spotikljaja za dan Kristusov,

¹¹Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

¹¹napolnjeni s sadom pravičnosti, ki se množi po Jezusu Kristusu, v slavo in hvalo Bogu.

¹²But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

¹²Želim pa, da spoznate, bratje, da je pripomoglo še bolj v prospeh evangeliju to, kar me je zadelo,

¹³So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

¹³tako da so spone moje postale očitne, da so za Kristusa, vsej cesarski straži in vsem drugim,

¹⁴And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

¹⁴in da si večina bratov, v Gospodu dobivši zaupanje po mojih sponah, upa bolj brez strahu govoriti besedo Božjo.

¹⁵Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

¹⁵Nekateri sicer oznanjajo Kristusa tudi iz zavisti in prepirljivosti, nekateri pa tudi iz dobre volje.

¹⁶The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

¹⁶Ti, ki to delajo iz ljubezni, vedo, da sem postavljen v zagovarjanje evangelija;

¹⁷But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

¹⁷drugi pa oznanjajo Kristusa iz strankarstva, ne iz čistega namena, ker menijo, da mi povzročijo stisko v sponah mojih.

¹⁸What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

¹⁸Ali kaj na tem? Saj se tako ali tako, bodisi s pretvezo, bodisi v resnici oznanja Kristus, in tega se veselim, da, bom se še veselil.

¹⁹For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

¹⁹Vem namreč, da mi to posluži v rešitev po prošnji vaši in podpori Duha Jezusa Kristusa,

²⁰According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

²⁰po trdnem pričakovanju in upanju mojem, da ne bom v ničemer osramočen, marveč da se bo v vsej srčnosti pričevanja kakor vedno, tudi sedaj poveličeval Kristus v mojem telesu, bodisi z življenjem ali s smrtjo.

²¹For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

²¹Zakaj meni je življenje Kristus, in smrt dobiček.

²²But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

²²Ako pa mi je še živeti v mesu, to mi pomnoži sad dela; in kaj naj izvolim, ne vem.

²³For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

²³Pritiska me pa oboje: želja me je, ločiti se in biti s Kristusom, zakaj to je veliko, veliko boljše;

²⁴Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

²⁴toda ostati v mesu je potrebnejše za vas.

²⁵And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

²⁵In v tem zaupanju vem, da ostanem in z vami vsemi ostanem za vaš prospeh in veselje v veri,

²⁶That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

²⁶da bode hvala vaša preobila v Kristusu Jezusu zaradi mene, vsled zopetnega prihoda mojega k vam.

²⁷Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

²⁷Samo naj bode življenje vaše, kakor se spodobi evangeliju Kristusovemu, da bom vedel, bodisi da pridem in vas vidim, bodisi da v daljavi slišim, kako je pri vas, da stojite trdno v enem duhu, enodušno in skupno se boreč za vero evangelija,

²⁸And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.

²⁸in da vas nikakor ne morejo zastrašiti nasprotniki; kar je njim očitno znamenje pogube, vam pa zveličanja, in to od Boga;

²⁹For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

²⁹ker vam je iz milosti dano za Kristusa, da ne samo verujete vanj, ampak tudi zanj trpite,imajoč isti boj, ki ste ga videli na meni in zdaj slišite o meni.

³⁰Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
