¹My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

⁴Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

⁴Ne dovoli spanja svojim očem, ne dremanja trepalnicam svojim;

⁵Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

⁵reši se kakor gazela iz roke lovčeve in kakor ptica iz ptičarjeve pesti.

⁶Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

⁶Pojdi k mravlji, o lenuh, oglej si pota njena in uči se modrosti:

⁷Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

⁷nima vodnika, nadzornika ali zapovednika,

⁸Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

⁸vendar pripravlja poleti hrano svojo, ob žetvi znaša, kar bo uživala.

⁹How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

⁹Doklej boš polegal, lenuh? kdaj vstaneš iz spanja svojega?

¹⁰Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

¹⁰Malo boš pospančkal, malo podremal, malo sklenil roke in poležal:

¹¹So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

¹¹v tem ti pride uboštvo kakor uren popotnik in nuja nadte kakor oboroženec.

¹²A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.

¹²Belijalov človek, krivičen mož je, kdor hodi s spačenimi usti,

¹³He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

¹³mežika z očmi, beseduje z nogami, pomiguje s prsti.

¹⁴Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.

¹⁴Vsakršna spačenost tiči v srcu njegovem, zlo snuje sleherni čas, prepire napravlja.

¹⁵Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

¹⁵Zatorej pride nagloma nesreča njegova, v hipu se razbije in ne bo ozdravljenja.

¹⁶These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

¹⁷A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹⁷oči visoke, jezik lažnjiv in roke, prelivajoče nedolžno kri,

¹⁸An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

¹⁸srce, ki snuje hudobne naklepe, noge, urno tekoče v hudo,

¹⁹A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

¹⁹kriva priča, ki raznaša laži, in kdor prepire seje med brati.

²⁰My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

²⁰Hrani, sin moj, zapoved očeta svojega in ne zametuj nauka matere svoje;

²¹Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

²¹privezuj ju na srce svoje vedno, pripenjaj ju na grlo svoje!

²²When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

²²Kamor koli pojdeš, te bosta spremljala, ko boš ležal, bosta pazila nate, in ko se zbudiš, se pogovarjala s teboj.

²³For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

²³Kajti zapoved je svetilnica in nauk je luč; in poučna svarila so pot življenja,

²⁴To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

²⁴da te obvarujejo ženske hudobne, prilizovanja jezika tujke.

²⁵Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

²⁵Ne poželi si lepote njene v srcu in s trepalnicami svojimi naj te ne ujame.

²⁶For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.

²⁶Kajti zaradi nečiste ženske se izgubi kruhek in prešeštnica lovi dušo dragoceno.

²⁷Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

²⁷Ali vzame kdo ogenj v nedrje svoje, in oblačila se mu ne osmode?

²⁸Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

²⁸Ali pa more kdo hoditi po žerjavici, da bi se mu noge ne obžgale?

²⁹So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

²⁹Tako, kdor se shaja z bližnjega svojega ženo, kdorkoli se je dotakne, ne ostane brez kazni.

³⁰Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

³⁰Ne zadene zaničevanje tatu, ako ukrade, da uteši poželenje svoje, ko je gladen;

³¹But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

³¹vendar zasačen mora povrniti sedemkrat, dati mora vse blago hiše svoje.

³²But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

³²A kdor prešeštvuje z ženo, norí; kdor se hoče pogubiti, naj to stori.

³³A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

³⁴For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

³⁴Ker ljubosumnost razvname srd moža, zato ne prizanese v dan maščevanja.Ne mara nobene odkupnine in ne sprejme, ponujaj še toliko darov.

³⁵He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
