⁵Open rebuke is better than secret love.

⁵Mejor es reprensión manifiesta Que amor oculto.

⁶Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

⁶Fieles son las heridas del que ama; Pero importunos los besos del que aborrece.

⁷The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

⁷El alma harta huella el panal de miel; Mas al alma hambrienta todo lo amargo es dulce.

⁸As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

⁸Cual ave que se va de su nido, Tal es el hombre que se va de su lugar.

⁹Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

⁹El ungüento y el perfume alegran el corazón: Y el amigo al hombre con el cordial consejo.

¹⁰Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

¹⁰No dejes á tu amigo, ni al amigo de tu padre; Ni entres en casa de tu hermano el día de tu aflicción. Mejor es el vecino cerca que el hermano lejano.

¹¹My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

¹¹Sé sabio, hijo mío, y alegra mi corazón, Y tendré qué responder al que me deshonrare.

¹²A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished.

¹³Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

¹⁴He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.

¹⁵A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

¹⁵Gotera continua en tiempo de lluvia, Y la mujer rencillosa, son semejantes:

¹⁶Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself.

¹⁶El que pretende contenerla, arresta el viento: O el aceite en su mano derecha.

¹⁷Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

¹⁷Hierro con hierro se aguza; Y el hombre aguza el rostro de su amigo.

¹⁸Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

¹⁸El que guarda la higuera, comerá su fruto; Y el que guarda á su señor, será honrado.

¹⁹As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.

¹⁹Como un agua se parece á otra, Así el corazón del hombre al otro.

²⁰Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

²⁰El sepulcro y la perdición nunca se hartan: Así los ojos del hombre nunca están satisfechos.

²¹As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

²¹El crisol prueba la plata, y la hornaza el oro: Y al hombre la boca del que lo alaba.

²²Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

²²Aunque majes al necio en un mortero entre granos de trigo á pisón majados, No se quitará de él su necedad.

²³Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.

²³Considera atentamente el aspecto de tus ovejas; Pon tu corazón á tus rebaños:

²⁴For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?

²⁴Porque las riquezas no son para siempre; ¿Y será la corona para perpetuas generaciones?

²⁵The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.

²⁵Saldrá la grama, aparecerá la hierba, Y segaránse las hierbas de los montes.

²⁶The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

²⁶Los corderos para tus vestidos, Y los cabritos para el precio del campo:

²⁷And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.

²⁷Y abundancia de leche de las cabras para tu mantenimiento, y para mantenimiento de tu casa, Y para sustento de tus criadas.
