¹Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

¹จงดูเถิด พระบิดาทรงโปรดประทานความรักแก่เราทั้งหลายเพียงไร ที่เราจะได้ชื่อว่าเป็นบุตรของพระเจ้า เหตุที่โลกไม่รู้จักเราทั้งหลาย ก็เพราะเขาไม่รู้จักพระองค์

²Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

²ท่านที่รักทั้งหลาย บัดนี้เราทั้งหลายเป็นบุตรของพระเจ้า และยังไม่ปรากฏว่าต่อไปเบื้องหน้านั้นเราจะเป็นอย่างไร แต่เรารู้ว่าเมื่อพระองค์จะเสด็จมาปรากฏนั้น เราทั้งหลายจะเป็นเหมือนพระองค์ เพราะว่าเราจะเห็นพระองค์อย่างที่พระองค์ทรงเป็นอยู่นั้น

³And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

³และทุกคนที่มีความหวังในพระองค์อย่างนี้ ก็ชำระตนให้บริสุทธิ์เหมือนอย่างพระองค์ทรงบริสุทธิ์

⁴Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

⁴ผู้ที่กระทำบาปก็ละเมิดพระราชบัญญัติด้วย เพราะการบาปเป็นสิ่งที่ละเมิดพระราชบัญญัติ

⁵And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

⁵ท่านทั้งหลายรู้แล้วว่า พระองค์ได้ทรงปรากฏเพื่อจะได้โปรดนำบาปของเราไป และบาปในพระองค์ไม่มีเลย

⁶Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

⁶คนใดที่อาศัยอยู่ในพระองค์ คนนั้นไม่ได้กระทำบาป ผู้ใดที่กระทำบาป ผู้นั้นยังไม่ได้เห็นพระองค์ และยังไม่ได้รู้จักพระองค์

⁷Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

⁷ลูกเล็กๆทั้งหลายเอ๋ย อย่าให้ใครชักจูงท่านให้หลง ผู้ที่ประพฤติการชอบธรรมก็เป็นผู้ชอบธรรม เหมือนอย่างพระองค์ทรงเป็นผู้ชอบธรรม

⁸He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

⁸ผู้ที่กระทำบาปก็มาจากพญามาร เพราะว่าพญามารได้กระทำบาปตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก พระบุตรของพระเจ้าได้เสด็จมาปรากฏก็เพราะเหตุนี้ คือเพื่อทรงทำลายกิจการของพญามารเสีย

⁹Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

⁹ผู้ใดบังเกิดจากพระเจ้า ผู้นั้นไม่กระทำบาป เพราะเมล็ดของพระองค์ดำรงอยู่กับผู้นั้น และเขากระทำบาปไม่ได้ เพราะเขาบังเกิดจากพระเจ้า

¹⁰In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

¹⁰ดังนี้แหละจึงเห็นได้ว่าผู้ใดเป็นบุตรของพระเจ้า และผู้ใดเป็นลูกของพญามาร คือว่าผู้ใดที่มิได้ประพฤติตามความชอบธรรม และไม่รักพี่น้องของตน ผู้นั้นก็มิได้มาจากพระเจ้า

¹¹For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

¹¹นี่เป็นคำสั่งสอนที่ท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินมาตั้งแต่เริ่มแรก คือให้เราทั้งหลายรักซึ่งกันและกัน

¹²Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

¹²อย่าเป็นเหมือนคาอินที่มาจากมารชั่วร้ายนั้น และได้ฆ่าน้องชายของตนเอง และเหตุใดเขาจึงฆ่าน้องชาย ก็เพราะการกระทำของเขาชั่ว และการกระทำของน้องชายนั้นชอบธรรม

¹³Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

¹³พี่น้องทั้งหลายของข้าพเจ้าเอ๋ย อย่าประหลาดใจถ้าโลกนี้เกลียดชังท่าน

¹⁴We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

¹⁴เราทั้งหลายรู้ว่า เราได้พ้นจากความตายไปสู่ชีวิตแล้ว ก็เพราะเรารักพี่น้อง ผู้ใดที่ไม่รักพี่น้องของตน ผู้นั้นก็ยังอยู่ในความตาย

¹⁵Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

¹⁵ผู้ใดที่เกลียดชังพี่น้องของตน ผู้นั้นก็เป็นผู้ฆ่าคน และท่านทั้งหลายก็รู้แล้วว่า ไม่มีผู้ฆ่าคนที่มีชีวิตนิรันดร์ดำรงอยู่ในเขาเลย

¹⁶Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

¹⁶ดังนี้แหละเราจึงรู้จักความรักของพระเจ้า เพราะว่าพระองค์ได้ทรงยอมวางชีวิตของพระองค์เพื่อเราทั้งหลาย และเราทั้งหลายก็ควรจะวางชีวิตของเราเพื่อพี่น้อง

¹⁷But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

¹⁷แต่ถ้าผู้ใดมีทรัพย์สมบัติในโลกนี้ และเห็นพี่น้องของตนขัดสน และยังใจจืดใจดำไม่สงเคราะห์เขา ความรักของพระเจ้าจะดำรงอยู่ในผู้นั้นอย่างไรได้

¹⁸My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

¹⁸ลูกเล็กๆทั้งหลายของข้าพเจ้าเอ๋ย อย่าให้เรารักกันด้วยคำพูดและด้วยลิ้นเท่านั้น แต่จงรักกันด้วยการกระทำและด้วยความจริง

¹⁹And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

¹⁹และโดยเหตุนี้เราจึงรู้ว่าเราอยู่ฝ่ายความจริง และจะได้ตั้งใจของเราให้แน่วแน่จำเพาะพระองค์

²⁰For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

²⁰เพราะถ้าใจของเรากล่าวโทษตัวเรา พระเจ้าทรงเป็นใหญ่กว่าใจของเรา และพระองค์ทรงทราบทุกสิ่ง

²¹Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

²¹ท่านที่รักทั้งหลาย ถ้าใจของเราไม่ได้กล่าวโทษเรา เราก็มีความมั่นใจจำเพาะพระเจ้า

²²And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

²²และเราขอสิ่งใดก็ตามเราก็ได้สิ่งนั้นจากพระองค์ เพราะเราประพฤติตามพระบัญญัติของพระองค์ และปฏิบัติสิ่งเหล่านั้นซึ่งเป็นที่พอพระทัยในสายพระเนตรของพระองค์

²³And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

²³และนี่เป็นพระบัญญัติของพระองค์ คือว่าให้เราทั้งหลายเชื่อในพระนามของพระเยซูคริสต์พระบุตรของพระองค์ และให้เรารักซึ่งกันและกัน ตามที่พระองค์ได้ทรงบัญญัติไว้แก่เราแล้ว

²⁴And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

²⁴และทุกคนที่ประพฤติตามพระบัญญัติของพระองค์ก็อยู่ในพระองค์ และพระองค์ทรงสถิตอยู่ในคนนั้น เหตุฉะนี้เราจึงรู้ว่าพระองค์ทรงสถิตอยู่ในเรา คือโดยพระวิญญาณ ซึ่งพระองค์ทรงโปรดประทานแก่เรา
