¹Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

¹บัดนี้ความเชื่อคือความแน่ใจในสิ่งที่เราหวังไว้ เป็นความรู้สึกมั่นใจว่า สิ่งที่ยังไม่ได้เห็นนั้นมีจริง

²For by it the elders obtained a good report.

²โดยความเชื่อนี้เอง พวกบรรพบุรุษก็ได้รับการรับรอง

³Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

³โดยความเชื่อนี้เอง เราจึงเข้าใจว่า พระเจ้าได้ทรงสร้างกัลปจักรวาลด้วยพระดำรัสของพระองค์ ดังนั้นสิ่งที่มองเห็นจึงเป็นสิ่งที่เกิดจากสิ่งที่ไม่ปรากฏให้เห็น

⁴By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

⁴โดยความเชื่อ อาแบลนั้นจึงได้นำเครื่องบูชาอันประเสริฐกว่าเครื่องบูชาของคาอินมาถวายแด่พระเจ้า เพราะเหตุเครื่องบูชานั้นจึงมีพยานว่าท่านเป็นคนชอบธรรม คือพระเจ้าทรงเป็นพยานแก่ของถวายของท่าน โดยความเชื่อนั้น แม้ว่าอาแบลตายแล้วท่านก็ยังพูดอยู่

⁵By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

⁵โดยความเชื่อ เอโนคจึงถูกรับขึ้นไป เพื่อไม่ให้ท่านประสบกับความตาย ไม่มีผู้ใดพบท่าน เพราะพระเจ้าทรงรับท่านไปแล้ว ก่อนที่ทรงรับท่านขึ้นไปนั้นมีพยานว่า ท่านเป็นที่พอพระทัยของพระเจ้า

⁶But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

⁶แต่ถ้าไม่มีความเชื่อแล้ว จะเป็นที่พอพระทัยของพระองค์ก็ไม่ได้เลย เพราะว่าผู้ที่จะมาหาพระเจ้าได้นั้นต้องเชื่อว่าพระองค์ทรงดำรงพระชนม์อยู่ และพระองค์ทรงเป็นผู้ประทานบำเหน็จให้แก่ทุกคนที่ปลงใจแสวงหาพระองค์

⁷By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

⁷โดยความเชื่อ เมื่อพระเจ้าทรงเตือนโนอาห์ถึงเหตุการณ์ที่ยังไม่ปรากฏ ท่านมีใจเกรงกลัวจัดแจงต่อนาวา เพื่อช่วยครอบครัวของท่านให้รอด และด้วยเหตุนี้เอง ท่านจึงได้ปรับโทษแก่โลก และได้เป็นทายาทแห่งความชอบธรรม ซึ่งบังเกิดมาจากความเชื่อ

⁸By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

⁸โดยความเชื่อ เมื่อทรงเรียกให้อับราฮัมออกเดินทางไปยังที่ซึ่งท่านจะรับเป็นมรดก ท่านได้เชื่อฟังและได้เดินทางออกไปโดยหารู้ไม่ว่าจะไปทางไหน

⁹By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

⁹โดยความเชื่อ ท่านได้พำนักในแผ่นดินแห่งพระสัญญานั้น เหมือนอยู่ในดินแดนแปลกถิ่น คืออาศัยอยู่ในเต็นท์กับอิสอัคและยาโคบซึ่งเป็นทายาทด้วยกันกับท่านในพระสัญญาอันเดียวกันนั้น

¹⁰For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

¹⁰เพราะว่าท่านได้คอยอยู่เพื่อจะได้เมืองที่มีราก ซึ่งพระเจ้าเป็นนายช่างและเป็นผู้ทรงสร้างขึ้น

¹¹Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

¹¹โดยความเชื่อ นางซาราห์เองเช่นกันจึงได้รับพลังตั้งครรภ์และได้คลอดบุตรเมื่อชรามากแล้ว เพราะนางถือว่าพระองค์ผู้ได้ทรงประทานพระสัญญานั้นทรงเป็นผู้สัตย์ซื่อ

¹²Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

¹²เหตุฉะนั้น คนเป็นอันมากดุจดาวในท้องฟ้า และดุจเม็ดทรายที่ทะเลซึ่งนับไม่ได้ได้บังเกิดแต่ชายคนเดียว และชายคนนั้นก็เท่ากับคนที่ตายแล้วด้วย

¹³These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

¹³บรรดาคนเหล่านี้ได้ตายไปในระหว่างที่เชื่ออยู่ ยังไม่ได้รับผลตามพระสัญญาทั้งหลายนั้น แต่ได้แลเห็นพระสัญญาแต่ไกล

¹⁴For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

¹⁴เพราะคนที่พูดอย่างนี้ก็แสดงให้เห็นชัดแล้วว่า เขากำลังแสวงหาเมืองที่จะได้เป็นของเขา

¹⁵And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

¹⁵และแท้จริงถ้าเขาคิดถึงบ้านเมืองที่เขาจากมานั้น เขาก็คงจะมีโอกาสกลับไปได้

¹⁶But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

¹⁶แต่บัดนี้เขาปรารถนาที่จะอยู่ในเมืองที่ประเสริฐกว่านั้น คือเมืองสวรรค์ เหตุฉะนั้นพระเจ้าจึงมิได้ทรงละอายเมื่อเขาเรียกพระองค์ว่าเป็นพระเจ้าของเขา เพราะพระองค์ได้ทรงจัดเตรียมเมืองหนึ่งไว้สำหรับเขาแล้ว

¹⁷By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

¹⁷โดยความเชื่อ เมื่ออับราฮัมถูกลองใจก็ได้ถวายอิสอัคเป็นเครื่องบูชา นี่แหละท่านผู้ได้รับพระสัญญานั้นไว้ก็ได้ถวายบุตรชายคนเดียวของตน

¹⁸Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

¹⁸คือบุตรที่มีพระดำรัสไว้ว่า `เขาจะเรียกเชื้อสายของเจ้าทางสายอิสอัค'

¹⁹Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

¹⁹ท่านเชื่อว่าพระเจ้าทรงฤทธิ์สามารถให้อิสอัคเป็นขึ้นมาจากความตายได้ และท่านได้รับบุตรนั้นกลับคืนมาอีก ประหนึ่งว่าบุตรนั้นเป็นขึ้นมาจากตาย

²⁰By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

²⁰โดยความเชื่อ อิสอัคได้อวยพรแก่ยาโคบและเอซาว คือเกี่ยวกับเหตุการณ์ซึ่งจะบังเกิดภายหน้านั้น

²¹By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

²¹โดยความเชื่อ ยาโคบเมื่อจะตายได้อวยพรแก่บุตรชายทั้งสองของโยเซฟ และได้นมัสการขณะที่ค้ำอยู่บนหัวไม้เท้าของท่าน

²²By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

²²โดยความเชื่อ โยเซฟเมื่อกำลังจะตายได้กล่าวถึงการที่ชนชาติอิสราเอลจะออกไป และได้มีคำสั่งไว้เรื่องกระดูกของท่าน

²³By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.

²³โดยความเชื่อ เมื่อโมเสสบังเกิดมาแล้ว บิดามารดาได้ซ่อนท่านไว้ถึงสามเดือน เพราะเห็นว่าเป็นเด็กรูปงาม และไม่ได้กลัวคำสั่งของกษัตริย์นั้น

²⁴By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

²⁴โดยความเชื่อ ครั้นโมเสสวัฒนาโตขึ้นแล้ว ไม่ยอมให้เรียกว่าเป็นบุตรชายของธิดากษัตริย์ฟาโรห์

²⁵Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

²⁵ท่านเลือกการร่วมทุกข์กับชนชาติของพระเจ้า แทนการเริงสำราญในความบาปสักเวลาหนึ่ง

²⁶Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

²⁶ท่านถือว่าความอัปยศของพระคริสต์ประเสริฐกว่าคลังทรัพย์ในประเทศอียิปต์ เพราะท่านหวังบำเหน็จที่จะได้รับนั้น

²⁷By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

²⁷โดยความเชื่อ ท่านได้ออกจากประเทศอียิปต์ โดยมิได้เกรงกลัวความกริ้วของกษัตริย์ เพราะท่านยอมทนอยู่เหมือนประหนึ่งได้เห็นพระองค์ผู้ไม่ทรงปรากฏแก่ตา

²⁸Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

²⁸โดยความเชื่อ ท่านได้ถือเทศกาลปัสกาและพิธีประพรมเลือด เพื่อมิให้องค์เพชฌฆาตผู้ประหารบุตรหัวปีมาถูกต้องพวกอิสราเอลได้

²⁹By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

²⁹โดยความเชื่อ พวกอิสราเอลได้ข้ามทะเลแดงเหมือนกับว่าเดินบนดินแห้ง แต่เมื่อพวกอียิปต์ได้ลองเดินข้ามดูบ้าง ก็จมน้ำตายหมด

³⁰By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.

³⁰โดยความเชื่อ เมื่อพวกอิสราเอลล้อมกำแพงเมืองเยรีโคไว้ถึงเจ็ดวันแล้ว กำแพงเมืองก็พังลง

³¹By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

³¹โดยความเชื่อ ราหับหญิงแพศยาจึงมิได้พินาศไปพร้อมกับคนเหล่านั้นที่มิได้เชื่อ เมื่อนางได้ต้อนรับคนสอดแนมนั้นไว้อย่างสันติ

³²And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

³²และข้าพเจ้าจะกล่าวอะไรต่อไปอีกเล่า เพราะไม่มีเวลาพอที่จะกล่าวถึงกิเดโอน บาราค แซมสัน เยฟธาห์ ดาวิด และซามูเอล และศาสดาพยากรณ์ทั้งหลาย

³³Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.

³³โดยความเชื่อ ท่านเหล่านั้นจึงได้มีชัยเหนืออาณาจักรต่างๆ ได้กระทำการชอบธรรม ได้รับพระสัญญา ได้ปิดปากสิงโต

³⁴Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

³⁴ได้ดับไฟที่ไหม้อย่างรุนแรง ได้พ้นจากคมดาบ ความอ่อนแอของท่านก็กลับเป็นความเข้มแข็ง มีกำลังความสามารถในการทำสงคราม ได้ตีกองทัพประเทศอื่นๆแตกพ่ายไป

³⁵Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

³⁵พวกผู้หญิงก็ได้รับคนพวกของนางที่ตายแล้วกลับฟื้นคืนชีวิตขึ้นมาอีก บางคนก็ถูกทรมาน แต่ก็ไม่ยอมรับการปลดปล่อย เพื่อเขาจะได้รับการเป็นขึ้นมาจากความตายอันประเสริฐกว่า

³⁶And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

³⁶บางคนถูกทดลองโดยคำเยาะเย้ยและการถูกโบยตี และยังถูกล่ามโซ่และถูกขังคุกด้วย

³⁷They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

³⁷บางคนถูกหินขว้าง บางคนก็ถูกเลื่อยเป็นท่อนๆ บางคนถูกทดลอง บางคนก็ถูกฆ่าด้วยดาบ บางคนเที่ยวสัญจรไปนุ่งห่มหนังแกะและหนังแพะ อดอยาก ทนทุกข์เวทนาและทนการเคี่ยวเข็ญ

³⁸(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

³⁸(โลกไม่สมกับคนเช่นนั้นเลย) เขาพเนจรไปในถิ่นทุรกันดารและตามภูเขา และอยู่ตามถ้ำและตามโพรง

³⁹And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

³⁹คนเหล่านั้นทุกคนมีชื่อเสียงดีโดยความเชื่อของเขา แต่เขาก็ยังไม่ได้รับสิ่งที่ทรงสัญญาไว้

⁴⁰God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

⁴⁰ด้วยว่าพระเจ้าทรงจัดเตรียมการอย่างดีกว่าไว้สำหรับเราทั้งหลาย เพื่อไม่ให้เขาทั้งหลายถึงที่สำเร็จนอกจากเรา
