1My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
1พี่น้องทั้งหลายของข้าพเจ้า การเชื่อในพระเยซูคริสต์องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าของเรา ผู้ทรงสง่าราศีนั้น อย่าให้เป็นด้วยการเลือกหน้าคน
2For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
2เพราะว่าถ้ามีคนหนึ่งสวมแหวนทองคำและแต่งตัวดีเข้ามาในที่ประชุมของท่าน และมีคนจนคนหนึ่งแต่งตัวซอมซ่อเข้ามาด้วย
3And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
3และท่านสนใจคนที่แต่งตัวด้วยเสื้อผ้าอย่างดี และกล่าวแก่เขาว่า "เชิญท่านนั่งที่นี่ในที่อันดีเถิด" และท่านก็พูดกับคนจนนั้นว่า "แกจงยืนอยู่ที่นั่น" หรือ "จงนั่งแทบที่รองเท้าของเราเถิด"
4Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
4พวกท่านเองมิแบ่งชั้นวรรณะ และกลายเป็นผู้วินิจฉัยด้วยใจชั่วหรือ
5Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
5พี่น้องที่รักของข้าพเจ้า จงฟังเถิด พระเจ้าทรงเลือกคนยากจนในโลกนี้ให้เป็นคนมั่งมีในความเชื่อ และให้เป็นผู้รับมรดกแห่งอาณาจักร ซึ่งพระองค์ทรงสัญญาไว้แก่ผู้ที่รักพระองค์มิใช่หรือ
6But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
6แต่ท่านทั้งหลายได้ดูถูกคนจน ไม่ใช่คนมั่งมีหรือที่กดขี่ท่านและลากตัวท่านไปขึ้นศาล
7Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
7ไม่ใช่เขาเหล่านั้นหรือที่สบประมาทพระนามอันประเสริฐซึ่งใช้เรียกท่าน
8If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
8ถ้าท่านทั้งหลายดำรงตนตามพระราชบัญญัติอันดีเลิศตามพระคัมภีร์ที่ว่า `จงรักเพื่อนบ้านเหมือนรักตนเอง' แล้ว ท่านทั้งหลายก็ประพฤติดีอยู่
9But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
9แต่ถ้าท่านทั้งหลายเลือกหน้าคน ท่านก็กระทำบาป เพราะตามพระราชบัญญัติ ท่านก็เป็นผู้ละเมิดแล้ว
10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
10เพราะว่าผู้ใดรักษาพระราชบัญญัติได้ทั้งหมด แต่ผิดอยู่ข้อเดียว ผู้นั้นก็เป็นผู้ผิดพระราชบัญญัติทั้งหมด
11For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
11ด้วยว่าพระองค์ผู้ได้ตรัสว่า `อย่าล่วงประเวณีผัวเมียเขา' ก็ได้ตรัสไว้ด้วยว่า `อย่ากระทำการฆาตกรรม' แม้ท่านไม่ได้ล่วงประเวณีแต่ได้กระทำการฆาตกรรม ท่านก็เป็นผู้ละเมิดพระราชบัญญัติ
12So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
12ท่านทั้งหลายจงพูดและจงกระทำเช่นผู้ที่จะได้รับการพิพากษาด้วยพระราชบัญญัติแห่งเสรีภาพ
13For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
13เพราะว่าการพิพากษาย่อมไม่กรุณาต่อผู้ที่ไม่แสดงความกรุณา แต่ความกรุณาย่อมมีชัยเหนือการพิพากษา
14What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
14พี่น้องของข้าพเจ้า แม้ผู้ใดจะว่าตนมีความเชื่อ แต่ไม่ประพฤติตาม จะได้ประโยชน์อะไร ความเชื่อจะช่วยผู้นั้นให้รอดได้หรือ
15If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
15ถ้าพี่น้องชายหญิงคนใดเปลือยเปล่าอยู่และขัดสนอาหารประจำวัน
16And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
16และมีคนใดในพวกท่านกล่าวแก่เขาว่า "เชิญไปเป็นสุขเถิด ขอให้อบอุ่นและอิ่มเถิด" และไม่ได้ให้สิ่งซึ่งจำเป็นสำหรับร่างกายแก่เขา จะเป็นประโยชน์อะไรเล่า
17Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
17ความเชื่อก็เช่นเดียวกัน ถ้าปราศจากการประพฤติ ก็ตายอยู่ในตัวเองแล้ว
18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
18แต่คงมีผู้ค้านว่า "ท่านมีความเชื่อ และข้าพเจ้ามีการประพฤติ" จงแสดงความเชื่อของท่านที่ปราศจากการประพฤติให้ข้าพเจ้าเห็น และข้าพเจ้าจะแสดงให้ท่านเห็นความเชื่อของข้าพเจ้าโดยการประพฤติของข้าพเจ้า
19Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
19ท่านเชื่อว่ามีพระเจ้าองค์เดียว นั่นก็ดีอยู่แล้ว แม้พวกปิศาจก็เชื่อเช่นกัน และกลัวจนตัวสั่น
20But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
20โอ คนไร้ค่า ท่านต้องการให้พิสูจน์หรือว่า ความเชื่อที่ปราศจากการประพฤติก็ตายแล้ว
21Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
21เมื่ออับราฮัมบิดาของเราได้ถวายอิศอัคบุตรชายของท่านบนแท่นบูชา จึงได้ความชอบธรรมโดยการประพฤติไม่ใช่หรือ
22Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
22ท่านทั้งหลายคงเห็นแล้วว่า ความเชื่อได้รวมกันกับการประพฤติของท่าน และความเชื่อนั้นก็ถึงที่สำเร็จโดยการประพฤติ
23And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
23และพระคัมภีร์ก็สำเร็จที่ว่า `อับราฮัมได้เชื่อพระเจ้า และพระองค์ทรงนับว่าเป็นความชอบธรรมแก่ท่าน' และท่านได้ชื่อว่า เป็น `สหายของพระเจ้า'
24Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
24ท่านทั้งหลายก็เห็นแล้วว่า ผู้ใดจะเป็นคนชอบธรรมได้ ก็เนื่องด้วยการประพฤติ และมิใช่ด้วยความเชื่อเพียงอย่างเดียว
25Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
25เช่นเดียวกันราหับหญิงแพศยาก็ได้ความชอบธรรมเนื่องด้วยการประพฤติด้วยมิใช่หรือ เมื่อนางได้รับรองผู้ส่งข่าวเหล่านั้น และส่งเขาไปเสียทางอื่น
26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
26เพราะกายที่ปราศจากจิตวิญญาณนั้นตายแล้วฉันใด ความเชื่อที่ปราศจากการประพฤติตามก็ตายแล้วด้วยฉันนั้น
