1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
1พี่น้องทั้งหลายของข้าพเจ้า อย่าให้เป็นอาจารย์กันมากหลายคนเลย เพราะท่านก็รู้ว่าเราทั้งหลายจะได้รับการพิพากษาที่เข้มงวดกว่าผู้อื่น
2For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
2เพราะเราทุกคนทำผิดพลาดไปหลายๆอย่าง ถ้าผู้ใดมิได้ทำผิดทางวาจา ผู้นั้นก็เป็นคนดีรอบคอบแล้ว และสามารถบังคับทั้งตัวไว้ได้ด้วย
3Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
3ดูเถิด เราเอาบังเหียนใส่ปากม้าเพื่อให้มันเชื่อฟังเรา เราก็บังคับมันให้ไปไหนๆได้ทั้งตัว
4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
4จงดูเรือด้วยเช่นกัน ถึงแม้ว่าเป็นเรือใหญ่ และถูกลมแรงพัดแล่นไป เรือก็ยังหันไปมาด้วยหางเสือเล็กๆตามใจนายท้ายที่จะให้ไปทางไหน
5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
5เช่นนั้นแหละลิ้นเป็นอวัยวะเล็กๆด้วย และพูดอวดอ้างการใหญ่ จงดูเถิด ไฟนิดเดียวอาจเผาไหม้มากเท่าใด
6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
6และลิ้นนั้นก็เป็นไฟ เป็นโลกแห่งการชั่วช้าตั้งอยู่ในบรรดาอวัยวะของเรา เป็นเหตุให้ทั้งกายมลทินไป ทำให้วัฏฏะแห่งธรรมชาติเผาไหม้ และมันเองก็ติดไฟมาจากนรก
7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
7เพราะสัตว์เดียรัจฉานทุกชนิด ทั้งนก สัตว์เลื้อยคลาน และสัตว์ในทะเลก็เลี้ยงให้เชื่องได้ และมนุษย์ก็ได้เลี้ยงให้เชื่องแล้ว
8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
8แต่ลิ้นนั้นไม่มีมนุษย์คนใดสามารถทำให้เชื่องได้ ลิ้นเป็นสิ่งชั่วซึ่งยับยั้งไม่ได้ และเต็มไปด้วยพิษร้ายถึงตาย
9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
9เราทั้งหลายสรรเสริญพระเจ้าคือพระบิดาด้วยลิ้นนั้น และด้วยลิ้นนั้นเราก็แช่งด่ามนุษย์ ผู้ซึ่งพระเจ้าทรงสร้างไว้ตามพระฉายาของพระองค์
10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
10คำสรรเสริญและคำแช่งด่าก็ออกมาจากปากอันเดียวกัน พี่น้องทั้งหลายของข้าพเจ้า ไม่ควรให้เป็นเช่นนั้นเลย
11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
11บ่อน้ำพุจะมีน้ำจืดและน้ำกร่อยพุ่งออกมาจากช่องเดียวกันได้หรือ
12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
12พี่น้องทั้งหลายของข้าพเจ้า ต้นมะเดื่อจะออกผลเป็นมะกอกเทศได้หรือ หรือเถาองุ่นจะออกผลเป็นมะเดื่อได้หรือ เช่นเดียวกันไม่มีบ่อน้ำพุใดจะให้เกิดทั้งน้ำเค็มและน้ำจืดได้
13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
13ในพวกท่านผู้ใดมีสติปัญญาและประกอบด้วยความรู้ ก็ให้ผู้นั้นแสดงการประพฤติของตนด้วยกริยาอันดี มีใจอ่อนสุภาพประกอบด้วยปัญญา
14But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
14แต่ถ้าท่านทั้งหลายมีใจอิจฉาอันขมขื่นและอาการแก่งแย่งกันในใจของท่าน อย่าอวดเลยและอย่าพูดมุสาต่อความจริง
15This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
15ปัญญาเช่นนี้ไม่ได้มาจากเบื้องบน แต่เป็นปัญญาอย่างโลก และเป็นเดียรัจฉานตัณหา และเป็นเช่นปิศาจ
16For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
16เพราะว่าที่ใดมีความอิจฉาและการแก่งแย่งกัน ที่นั่นก็วุ่นวายและมีการกระทำชั่วช้าลามกทุกอย่าง
17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
17แต่ปัญญาจากเบื้องบนนั้นบริสุทธิ์เป็นประการแรก แล้วจึงเป็นความสงบสุข สุภาพและว่าง่าย เปี่ยมด้วยความเมตตาและผลที่ดี ไม่เลือกหน้าคน ไม่หน้าซื่อใจคด
18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
18และผลแห่งความชอบธรรมก็หว่านลงในสันติสุขสำหรับผู้เหล่านั้นที่กระทำให้เกิดสันติสุข
