¹Then Job answered and said,

¹Siis rääkis Iiob ja ütles:

²Of a truth I know that it is so: But how can man be just with God?

²'Ma tean tõesti, et see nõnda on. Kuidas võib inimene õige olla Jumala ees?

³If he be pleased to contend with him, He cannot answer him one of a thousand.

³Kui keegi tahaks temaga vaielda, ei suudaks ta temale vastata mitte ainsalgi korral tuhandest.

⁴[He is] wise in heart, and mighty in strength: Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?-

⁴Ta on südamelt tark ja jõult tugev, kes võiks teda trotsida ja ise pääseda?

⁵[Him] that removeth the mountains, and they know it not, When he overturneth them in his anger;

⁵Tema liigutab mägesid, ilma et need märkaksid, kui ta oma vihas neid kummutab;

⁶That shaketh the earth out of its place, And the pillars thereof tremble;

⁶tema põrutab maa oma asemelt, nõnda et selle sambad vabisevad;

⁷That commandeth the sun, and it riseth not, And sealeth up the stars;

⁸That alone stretcheth out the heavens, And treadeth upon the waves of the sea;

⁹That maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the chambers of the south;

¹⁰That doeth great things past finding out, Yea, marvellous things without number.

¹⁰tema teeb suuri ja mõistmatuid asju ning otsatuid imetegusid.

¹¹Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: He passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

¹¹Vaata, ta läheb minust mööda, aga mina ei näe, ta käib üha, aga mina ei märka teda.

¹²Behold, he seizeth [the prey], who can hinder him? Who will say unto him, What doest thou?

¹²Vaata, ta napsab ära, kes võiks teda takistada? Kes ütleks temale: 'Mis sa teed?'

¹³God will not withdraw his anger; The helpers of Rahab do stoop under him.

¹³Jumal ei hoia tagasi oma viha, temale peavad alistuma Rahabi aitajad.

¹⁴How much less shall I answer him, And choose out my words [to reason] with him?

¹⁴Kuidas võiksin siis mina temale vastata, oma sõnu tema jaoks valida?

¹⁵Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer; I would make supplication to my judge.

¹⁵Kuigi olen õige, ma ei saa vastata, vaid pean anuma oma kohtumõistjat.

¹⁶If I had called, and he had answered me, Yet would I not believe that he hearkened unto my voice.

¹⁶Kuigi ma hüüaksin ja tema vastaks mulle, ei usu ma siiski, et ta mu häält kuulda võtab,

¹⁷For he breaketh me with a tempest, And multiplieth my wounds without cause.

¹⁷tema, kes haarab mu järele tormis ja lisab mulle ilma põhjuseta haavu,

¹⁸He will not suffer me to take my breath, But filleth me with bitterness.

¹⁸kes ei lase mind hinge tõmmata, vaid täidab mind kibedusega.

¹⁹If [we speak] of strength, lo, [he is] mighty! And if of justice, Who, [saith he], will summon me?

¹⁹Kui on küsimus jõust, vaata, ta on tugevam. Või kui on kohtuasi, kes mind ette kutsub?

²⁰Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me: Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse.

²⁰Kuigi olen õige, mõistab mind hukka mu oma suu; kuigi olen süütu, peab tema mind süüdlaseks.

²¹I am perfect; I regard not myself; I despise my life.

²¹Ma olen süütu! Ma ei hooli oma hingest, ma põlgan oma elu!

²²It is all one; therefore I say, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

²²Ükskõik! Seepärast ma ütlen: 'Tema hävitab niihästi õige kui õela.'

²³If the scourge slay suddenly, He will mock at the trial of the innocent.

²³Kui uputus äkitselt surmab, siis ta pilkab süütute meeleheidet.

²⁴The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He covereth the faces of the judges thereof: If [it be] not [he], who then is it?

²⁴Kui maa on antud õela kätte, ta katab selle kohtumõistja palge - kui mitte tema, kes siis muu?

²⁵Now my days are swifter than a post: They flee away, they see no good,

²⁵Mu päevad on jooksjast nobedamad, kaovad õnne nägemata.

²⁶They are passed away as the swift ships; As the eagle that swoopeth on the prey.

²⁶Need mööduvad otsekui pilliroost vened, nagu kotkas, kes sööstab oma saagi kallale.

²⁷If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will put off my [sad] countenance, and be of good cheer;

²⁷Kui ma mõtlen: 'Ma unustan oma kaebuse, jätan oma kurva näo ja olen rõõmus',

²⁸I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

²⁸siis on mul hirm kõigi oma kannatuste ees, ma tean, et sa ei pea mind süütuks.

²⁹I shall be condemned; Why then do I labor in vain?

²⁹Olgu ma siis juba süüdi! Miks peaksin ennast veel ilmaasjata vaevama?

³⁰If I wash myself with snow water, And make my hands never so clean;

³⁰Isegi kui ma peseksin ennast lumega ja puhastaksin oma käsi leelisega,

³¹Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch, And mine own clothes shall abhor me.

³¹pistaksid sina mind poriauku ja siis jälestaksid mind mu enda riidedki.

³²For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, That we should come together in judgment.

³²Sest Jumal ei ole inimene nagu mina, et ma temale saaksin vastata, et me üheskoos saaksime kohut käia.

³³There is no umpire betwixt us, That might lay his hand upon us both.

³³Ei ole meie vahel vahemeest, kes oma käe saaks panna meie mõlema peale.

³⁴Let him take his rod away from me, And let not his terror make me afraid:

³⁴Võtku ta oma vits ära mu pealt, et hirm tema ees mind ei heidutaks!

³⁵Then would I speak, and not fear him; For I am not so in myself.

³⁵Siis ma saaksin rääkida ilma teda kartmata. Sest ma ei ole omast meelest mitte niisugune.
