¹And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.

¹Hiram, roi de Tyr, envoya ses serviteurs vers Salomon, car il apprit qu'on l'avait oint pour roi à la place de son père, et il avait toujours aimé David.

¹וישלח חירם מלך צור את עבדיו אל שלמה כי שמע כי אתו משחו למלך תחת אביהו כי אהב היה חירם לדוד כל הימים׃

²And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,

²Salomon fit dire à Hiram:

²וישלח שלמה אל חירם לאמר׃

³Thou knowest how that David my father could not build a house for the name of Jehovah his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until Jehovah put them under the soles of his feet.

³Tu sais que David, mon père, n'a pas pu bâtir une maison à l'Eternel, son Dieu, à cause des guerres dont ses ennemis l'ont enveloppé jusqu'à ce que l'Eternel les eût mis sous la plante de ses pieds.

³אתה ידעת את דוד אבי כי לא יכל לבנות בית לשם יהוה אלהיו מפני המלחמה אשר סבבהו עד תת יהוה אתם תחת כפות רגלו׃

⁴But now Jehovah my God hath given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary, nor evil occurrence.

⁴Maintenant l'Eternel, mon Dieu, m'a donné du repos de toutes parts; plus d'adversaires, plus de calamités!

⁴ועתה הניח יהוה אלהי לי מסביב אין שטן ואין פגע רע׃

⁵And, behold, I purpose to build a house for the name of Jehovah my God, as Jehovah spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build the house for my name.

⁵Voici, j'ai l'intention de bâtir une maison au nom de l'Eternel, mon Dieu, comme l'Eternel l'a déclaré à David, mon père, en disant: Ton fils que je mettrai à ta place sur ton trône, ce sera lui qui bâtira une maison à mon nom.

⁵והנני אמר לבנות בית לשם יהוה אלהי כאשר דבר יהוה אל דוד אבי לאמר בנך אשר אתן תחתיך על כסאך הוא יבנה הבית לשמי׃

⁶Now therefore command thou that they cut me cedar-trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants; and I will give thee hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt say: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that knoweth how to cut timber like unto the Sidonians.

⁶Ordonne maintenant que l'on coupe pour moi des cèdres du Liban. Mes serviteurs seront avec les tiens, et je te paierai le salaire de tes serviteurs tel que tu l'auras fixé; car tu sais qu'il n'y a personne parmi nous qui s'entende à couper les bois comme les Sidoniens.

⁶ועתה צוה ויכרתו לי ארזים מן הלבנון ועבדי יהיו עם עבדיך ושכר עבדיך אתן לך ככל אשר תאמר כי אתה ידעת כי אין בנו איש ידע לכרת עצים כצדנים׃

⁷And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be Jehovah this day, who hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.

⁷Lorsqu'il entendit les paroles de Salomon, Hiram eut une grande joie, et il dit: Béni soit aujourd'hui l'Eternel, qui a donné à David un fils sage pour chef de ce grand peuple!

⁷ויהי כשמע חירם את דברי שלמה וישמח מאד ויאמר ברוך יהוה היום אשר נתן לדוד בן חכם על העם הרב הזה׃

⁸And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have heard [the message] which thou hast sent unto me: I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.

⁸Et Hiram fit répondre à Salomon: J'ai entendu ce que tu m'as envoyé dire. Je ferai tout ce qui te plaira au sujet des bois de cèdre et des bois de cyprès.

⁸וישלח חירם אל שלמה לאמר שמעתי את אשר שלחת אלי אני אעשה את כל חפצך בעצי ארזים ובעצי ברושים׃

⁹My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea; and I will make them into rafts to go by sea unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be broken up there, and thou shalt receive them; and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.

⁹Mes serviteurs les descendront du Liban à la mer, et je les expédierai par mer en radeaux jusqu'au lieu que tu m'indiqueras; là, je les ferai délier, et tu les prendras. Ce que je désire en retour, c'est que tu fournisses des vivres à ma maison.

⁹עבדי ירדו מן הלבנון ימה ואני אשימם דברות בים עד המקום אשר תשלח אלי ונפצתים שם ואתה תשא ואתה תעשה את חפצי לתת לחם ביתי׃

¹⁰So Hiram gave Solomon timber of cedar and timber of fir according to all his desire.

¹⁰Hiram donna à Salomon des bois de cèdre et des bois de cyprès autant qu'il en voulut.

¹⁰ויהי חירום נתן לשלמה עצי ארזים ועצי ברושים כל חפצו׃

¹¹And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.

¹¹Et Salomon donna à Hiram vingt mille cors de froment pour l'entretien de sa maison et vingt cors d'huile d'olives concassées; c'est ce que Salomon donna chaque année à Hiram.

¹¹ושלמה נתן לחירם עשרים אלף כר חטים מכלת לביתו ועשרים כר שמן כתית כה יתן שלמה לחירם שנה בשנה׃

¹²And Jehovah gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.

¹²L'Eternel donna de la sagesse à Salomon, comme il le lui avait promis. Et il y eut paix entre Hiram et Salomon, et ils firent alliance ensemble.

¹²ויהוה נתן חכמה לשלמה כאשר דבר לו ויהי שלם בין חירם ובין שלמה ויכרתו ברית שניהם׃

¹³And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.

¹³Le roi Salomon leva sur tout Israël des hommes de corvée; ils étaient au nombre de trente mille.

¹³ויעל המלך שלמה מס מכל ישראל ויהי המס שלשים אלף איש׃

¹⁴And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses; a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home; and Adoniram was over the men subject to taskwork.

¹⁴Il les envoya au Liban, dix mille par mois alternativement; ils étaient un mois au Liban, et deux mois chez eux. Adoniram était préposé sur les hommes de corvée.

¹⁴וישלחם לבנונה עשרת אלפים בחדש חליפות חדש יהיו בלבנון שנים חדשים בביתו ואדנירם על המס׃

¹⁵And Solomon had threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens, and fourscore thousand that were hewers in the mountains;

¹⁵Salomon avait encore soixante-dix mille hommes qui portaient les fardeaux et quatre-vingt mille qui taillaient les pierres dans la montagne,

¹⁵ויהי לשלמה שבעים אלף נשא סבל ושמנים אלף חצב בהר׃

¹⁶besides Solomon's chief officers that were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, who bare rule over the people that wrought in the work.

¹⁶sans compter les chefs, au nombre de trois mille trois cents, préposés par Salomon sur les travaux et chargés de surveiller les ouvriers.

¹⁶לבד משרי הנצבים לשלמה אשר על המלאכה שלשת אלפים ושלש מאות הרדים בעם העשים במלאכה׃

¹⁷And the king commanded, and they hewed out great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with wrought stone.

¹⁷Le roi ordonna d'extraire de grandes et magnifiques pierres de taille pour les fondements de la maison.

¹⁷ויצו המלך ויסעו אבנים גדלות אבנים יקרות ליסד הבית אבני גזית׃

¹⁸And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Gebalites did fashion them, and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.

¹⁸Les ouvriers de Salomon, ceux de Hiram, et les Guibliens, les taillèrent, et ils préparèrent les bois et les pierres pour bâtir la maison.

¹⁸ויפסלו בני שלמה ובני חירום והגבלים ויכינו העצים והאבנים לבנות הבית׃
