¹I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, be made for all men;

¹J'exhorte donc, avant toutes choses, à faire des prières, des supplications, des requêtes, des actions de grâces, pour tous les hommes,

¹ועתה קדם כל דבר אבקשה מכם לשאת תפלות ותחנונים ובקשות ותודות בעד כל בני אדם׃

²for kings and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity.

²pour les rois et pour tous ceux qui sont élevés en dignité, afin que nous menions une vie paisible et tranquille, en toute piété et honnêteté.

²בעד המלכים וכל השליטים למען נחיה חיי השקט ובטח בכל חסידות וישר׃

³This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

³Cela est bon et agréable devant Dieu notre Sauveur,

³כי כן טוב ורצוי בעיני אלהים מושיענו׃

⁴who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth.

⁴qui veut que tous les hommes soient sauvés et parviennent à la connaissance de la vérité.

⁴אשר חפצו שיושעו כל בני האדם ויגיעו להכרת האמת׃

⁵For there is one God, one mediator also between God and men, [himself] man, Christ Jesus,

⁵Car il y a un seul Dieu, et aussi un seul médiateur entre Dieu et les hommes, Jésus-Christ homme,

⁵כי אחד הוא האלהים ואחד הוא העמד בין אלהים ובין בני אדם הוא בן אדם המשיח ישוע׃

⁶who gave himself a ransom for all; the testimony [to be borne] in its own times;

⁶qui s'est donné lui-même en rançon pour tous. C'est là le témoignage rendu en son propre temps,

⁶אשר נתן את נפשו כפר בעד כל וזאת העדות הבאה בעתה׃

⁷whereunto I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth, I lie not), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

⁷et pour lequel j'ai été établi prédicateur et apôtre, -je dis la vérité, je ne mens pas, -chargé d'instruire les païens dans la foi et la vérité.

⁷אשר אני הפקדתי לה לכרוז ולשליח אמת אני אמר במשיח ולא אשקר מורה הגוים באמונה ובאמת׃

⁸I desire therefore that the men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and disputing.

⁸Je veux donc que les hommes prient en tout lieu, en élevant des mains pures, sans colère ni mauvaises pensées.

⁸לכן רצוני שיתפללו האנשים בכל מקום וישאו ידיהם קדש בלי כעס ומדון׃

⁹In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety; not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment;

⁹Je veux aussi que les femmes, vêtues d'une manière décente, avec pudeur et modestie, ne se parent ni de tresses, ni d'or, ni de perles, ni d'habits somptueux,

⁹וכן גם הנשים תתיפינה בתלבשת נאה עם בשת פנים וצניעות לא במחלפות הראש לא בזהב לא בפנינים ולא במלבושים יקרים׃

¹⁰but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works.

¹⁰mais qu'elles se parent de bonnes oeuvres, comme il convient à des femmes qui font profession de servir Dieu.

¹⁰אלא כמו שהוא הגון לנשים אשר בחרו להן יראת אלהים במעשים טובים׃

¹¹Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection.

¹¹Que la femme écoute l'instruction en silence, avec une entière soumission.

¹¹האשה תלמד דומם בכל הכנעה׃

¹²But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness.

¹²Je ne permets pas à la femme d'enseigner, ni de prendre de l'autorité sur l'homme; mais elle doit demeurer dans le silence.

¹²ואינני נתן רשות לאשה ללמד אף לא להתנשא על האיש אלא תדום׃

¹³For Adam was first formed, then Eve;

¹³Car Adam a été formé le premier, Eve ensuite;

¹³כי אדם נוצר בראשונה ואחריו חוה׃

¹⁴and Adam was not beguiled, but the woman being beguiled hath fallen into transgression:

¹⁴et ce n'est pas Adam qui a été séduit, c'est la femme qui, séduite, s'est rendue coupable de transgression.

¹⁴ואדם לא נפתה כי האשה שמעה לקול המשיא ותבא לידי עברה׃

¹⁵but she shall be saved through her child-bearing, if they continue in faith and love and sanctification with sobriety.

¹⁵Elle sera néanmoins sauvée en devenant mère, si elle persévère avec modestie dans la foi, dans la charité, et dans la sainteté.

¹⁵אבל תושע בלדתה בנים אם תעמדנה באמונה ובאהבה ובקדשה עם הצניעות׃
