¹Faithful is the saying, If a man seeketh the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

¹Cette parole est certaine: Si quelqu'un aspire à la charge d'évêque, il désire une oeuvre excellente.

¹אמת הדבר איש כי יבקש לו פקידות הוא מתאוה מעשה טוב׃

²The bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

²Il faut donc que l'évêque soit irréprochable, mari d'une seule femme, sobre, modéré, réglé dans sa conduite, hospitalier, propre à l'enseignement.

²ופקיד העדה צריך להיות איש אשר אין בו דפי בעל אשה אחת משל ברוחו צנוע ונחמד לבריות מכניס ארחים ומבין ללמד ולא אהב יין ולא נוח להכות ולא בצע בצע רע׃

³no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money;

³Il faut qu'il ne soit ni adonné au vin, ni violent, mais indulgent, pacifique, désintéressé.

³כי אם דן לכף זכות ולא בעל קטטה ולא אהב כסף׃

⁴one that ruleth well his own house, having [his] children in subjection with all gravity;

⁴Il faut qu'il dirige bien sa propre maison, et qu'il tienne ses enfants dans la soumission et dans une parfaite honnêteté;

⁴ויהי מנהיג את ביתו בטוב ומדריך את בניו למשמעתו בכל הישר׃

⁵(but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

⁵car si quelqu'un ne sait pas diriger sa propre maison, comment prendra-t-il soin de l'Eglise de Dieu?

⁵כי אם לא ידע איש להנהיג את ביתו איככה יוכל לדאג לעדת אלהים׃

⁶not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

⁶Il ne faut pas qu'il soit un nouveau converti, de peur qu'enflé d'orgueil il ne tombe sous le jugement du diable.

⁶ואל יהי תלמיד הדש למען לא ירהב לבו ויפל בדין המשטין׃

⁷Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

⁷Il faut aussi qu'il reçoive un bon témoignage de ceux du dehors, afin de ne pas tomber dans l'opprobre et dans les pièges du diable.

⁷והוא גם צריך לשם טוב בפי אלה אשר בחוץ פן יפל בחרפה ובמוקש המשטין׃

⁸Deacons in like manner [must be] grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

⁸Les diacres aussi doivent être honnêtes, éloignés de la duplicité, des excès du vin, d'un gain sordide,

⁸וכן גם השמשים יהיו ישרים ולא מחליקי לשון ולא אהבים סבא יין ולא נטים אחרי בצע רע׃

⁹holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

⁹conservant le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure.

⁹כי אם ישמרו את סוד האמונה ברוח טהורה׃

¹⁰And let these also first be proved; then let them serve as deacons, if they be blameless.

¹⁰Qu'on les éprouve d'abord, et qu'ils exercent ensuite leur ministère, s'ils sont sans reproche.

¹⁰וגם אלה יבחנו בראשונה ואחר כן ישמשו אם אין בהם דפי׃

¹¹Women in like manner [must be] grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things.

¹¹Les femmes, de même, doivent être honnêtes, non médisantes, sobres, fidèles en toutes choses.

¹¹וככה הנשים תהיינה ישרות ולא מלשינות משלות ברוחן ונאמנות בכל׃

¹²Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling [their] children and their own houses well.

¹²Les diacres doivent être maris d'une seule femme, et diriger bien leurs enfants et leurs propres maisons;

¹²השמשים יהיו כל אחד בעל אשה אחת ומנהלים בטוב את בניהם ואת בתיהם׃

¹³For they that have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

¹³car ceux qui remplissent convenablement leur ministère s'acquièrent un rang honorable, et une grande assurance dans la foi en Jésus-Christ.

¹³כי המשמשים היטב יקנו לעצמם מעלה טובה ובטחון רב באמונת המשיח ישוע׃

¹⁴These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly;

¹⁴Je t'écris ces choses, avec l'espérance d'aller bientôt vers toi,

¹⁴זאת אני כתב אליך ואקוה לבא אליך במהרה׃

¹⁵but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

¹⁵mais afin que tu saches, si je tarde, comment il faut se conduire dans la maison de Dieu, qui est l'Eglise du Dieu vivant, la colonne et l'appui de la vérité.

¹⁵ואם אחר הנה תדע איך להתנהג בבית האלהים שהיא עדת אלהים חיים עמוד האמת ומכונה׃

¹⁶And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness; He who was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the spirit, Seen of angels, Preached among the nations, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.

¹⁶Et, sans contredit, le mystère de la piété est grand: celui qui a été manifesté en chair, justifié par l'Esprit, vu des anges, prêché aux Gentils, cru dans le monde, élevé dans la gloire.

¹⁶ובודי גדול סוד החסידות אלהים נגלה בבשר נצדק ברוח נראה למלאכים הגד בגוים נתקבל באמונה בעולם נעלה בכבוד׃
