¹Rebuke not an elder, but exhort him as a father; the younger men as brethren:

¹Ne réprimande pas rudement le vieillard, mais exhorte-le comme un père; exhorte les jeunes gens comme des frères,

¹אל תגער בזקן כי אם תזהירנו כאב לך ואת הצעירים כאחים׃

²the elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, in all purity.

²les femmes âgées comme des mères, celles qui sont jeunes comme des soeurs, en toute pureté.

²את הזקנות כאמות ואת הצעירות כאחיות ובכל טהרה׃

³Honor widows that are widows indeed.

³Honore les veuves qui sont véritablement veuves.

³כבד את האלמנות אשר באמת אלמנות הנה׃

⁴But if any widow hath children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety towards their own family, and to requite their parents: for this is acceptable in the sight of God.

⁴Si une veuve a des enfants ou des petits-enfants, qu'ils apprennent avant tout à exercer la piété envers leur propre famille, et à rendre à leurs parents ce qu'ils ont reçu d'eux; car cela est agréable à Dieu.

⁴וכי יהיו לאלמנה בנים או בני בנים הם ילמדו לראשונה לעשות חסד עם ביתם ולשלם גמול לאבותם כי זה הוא טוב ורצוי לפני האלהים׃

⁵Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, hath her hope set on God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.

⁵Celle qui est véritablement veuve, et qui est demeurée dans l'isolement, met son espérance en Dieu et persévère nuit et jour dans les supplications et les prières.

⁵אבל האלמנה באמת אשר נשארה יחידה שמה אלהים מבטחה ומתמדת בתפלות ובתחנות לילה ויומם׃

⁶But she that giveth herself to pleasure is dead while she liveth.

⁶Mais celle qui vit dans les plaisirs est morte, quoique vivante.

⁶אך המענגה מתה היא בחייה׃

⁷These things also command, that they may be without reproach.

⁷Déclare-leur ces choses, afin qu'elles soient irréprochables.

⁷וזאת תצוה למען תהיינה בלא דפי׃

⁸But if any provideth not for his own, and specially his own household, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.

⁸Si quelqu'un n'a pas soin des siens, et principalement de ceux de sa famille, il a renié la foi, et il est pire qu'un infidèle.

⁸אבל מי שלא יפרנס את קרוביו וביותר את בני ביתו כפר באמונה והוא גרוע מאשר איננו מאמין׃

⁹Let none be enrolled as a widow under threescore years old, [having been] the wife of one man,

⁹Qu'une veuve, pour être inscrite sur le rôle, n'ait pas moins de soixante ans, qu'elle ait été femme d'un seul mari,

⁹אלמנה אל תבחר זולתי בת ששים שנה ואשר היתה אשת איש אחד׃

¹⁰well reported of for good works; if she hath brought up children, if she hath used hospitality to strangers, if she hath washed the saints' feet, if she hath relieved the afflicted, if she hath diligently followed every good work.

¹⁰qu'elle soit recommandable par de bonnes oeuvres, ayant élevé des enfants, exercé l'hospitalité, lavé les pieds des saints, secouru les malheureux, pratiqué toute espèce de bonne oeuvre.

¹⁰ויש לה עדות על מעשיה הטובים שגדלה בנים והכניסה ארחים ירחצה את רגלי הקדשים ותמכה את העשוקים ורדפה כל מעשה טוב׃

¹¹But younger widows refuse: for when they have waxed wanton against Christ, they desire to marry;

¹¹Mais refuse les jeunes veuves; car, lorsque la volupté les détache du Christ, elles veulent se marier,

¹¹אבל האלמנות הצעירות אל תקבל כי בהטות יצרן את לבן מן המשיח חשקות הן להיות לאיש׃

¹²having condemnation, because they have rejected their first pledge.

¹²et se rendent coupables en ce qu'elles violent leur premier engagement.

¹²ודינן עליהן כי בגדו באמונתן הראשונה׃

¹³And withal they learn also [to be] idle, going about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

¹³Avec cela, étant oisives, elles apprennent à aller de maison en maison; et non seulement elles sont oisives, mais encore causeuses et intrigantes, disant ce qu'il ne faut pas dire.

¹³ועוד בהיותן עצלות למדו לשוטט מבית לבית ולא לבד עצלות כי אף מפטפטות ורדפות אחר חדשות ומדברות את אשר לא יתכן׃

¹⁴I desire therefore that the younger [widows] marry, bear children, rule the household, give no occasion to the adversary for reviling:

¹⁴Je veux donc que les jeunes se marient, qu'elles aient des enfants, qu'elles dirigent leur maison, qu'elles ne donnent à l'adversaire aucune occasion de médire;

¹⁴על כן רצוני כי הצעירות תהיינה לאיש ללדת בנים ולהנהיג את בתיהן ולא לתת לאיב תאנה לחרף׃

¹⁵for already some are turned aside after Satan.

¹⁵car déjà quelques-unes se sont détournées pour suivre Satan.

¹⁵כי יש מהן אשר כבר סרו אחרי השטן׃

¹⁶If any woman that believeth hath widows, let her relieve them, and let not the church be burdened; that it mat relieve them that are widows indeed.

¹⁶Si quelque fidèle, homme ou femme, a des veuves, qu'il les assiste, et que l'Eglise n'en soit point chargée, afin qu'elle puisse assister celles qui sont véritablement veuves.

¹⁶בן אמונה או בת אמונה שיש להם אלמנות יעזרו אתן ולא תהיינה למשא על הקהל כדי שיוכל להספיק לאלה אשר הנה אלמנות באמת׃

¹⁷Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching.

¹⁷Que les anciens qui dirigent bien soient jugés dignes d'un double honneur, surtout ceux qui travaillent à la prédication et à l'enseignement.

¹⁷הזקנים המיטיבים לנהל ראוים הם למשנה כבוד וביותר העמלים בדבר ובהוראה׃

¹⁸For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. And, The laborer is worthy of his hire.

¹⁸Car l'Ecriture dit: Tu n'emmuselleras point le boeuf quand il foule le grain. Et l'ouvrier mérite son salaire.

¹⁸כי הכתוב אמר לא תחסם שור בדישו ועוד נאמר הפעל שוה בשכרו׃

¹⁹Against an elder receive not an accusation, except at [the mouth of] two or three witnesses.

¹⁹Ne reçois point d'accusation contre un ancien, si ce n'est sur la déposition de deux ou trois témoins.

¹⁹אל תקבל שטנה על הזקן בלתי אם על פי שנים או שלשה עדים׃

²⁰Them that sin reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear.

²⁰Ceux qui pèchent, reprends-les devant tous, afin que les autres aussi éprouvent de la crainte.

²⁰את החטאים תוכיח בפני כל למען ייראו גם האחרים׃

²¹I charge [thee] in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.

²¹Je te conjure devant Dieu, devant Jésus-Christ, et devant les anges élus, d'observer ces choses sans prévention, et de ne rien faire par faveur.

²¹הנני מעיד בך נגד האלהים ואדנינו ישוע המשיח ונגד בחירי המלאכים אשר שמור תשמר את זאת בלי משפט נמהר ולא תעשה דבר במשא פנים׃

²²Lay hands hastily on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.

²²N'impose les mains à personne avec précipitation, et ne participe pas aux péchés d'autrui; toi-même, conserve-toi pur.

²²אל תהי נמהר בסמיכת ידיך על אדם ולא תשתתף לחטאת אחרים שמר את נפשך בטהרה׃

²³Be no longer a drinker of water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

²³Ne continue pas à ne boire que de l'eau; mais fais usage d'un peu de vin, à cause de ton estomac et de tes fréquentes indispositions.

²³אל תרבה לשתות עוד מים כי אם קח מעט יין בעבור בטנך ואשר פעמים רבות חלה אתה׃

²⁴Some men's sins are evident, going before unto judgment; and some men also they follow after.

²⁴Les péchés de certains hommes sont manifestes, même avant qu'on les juge, tandis que chez d'autres, ils ne se découvrent que dans la suite.

²⁴יש בני אדם אשר חטאתיהם גלויות ומקדימות לדין ויש מהם אשר הנה הלכות אחריהם׃

²⁵In like manner also there are good works that are evident; and such as are otherwise cannot be hid.

²⁵De même, les bonnes oeuvres sont manifestes, et celles qui ne le sont pas ne peuvent rester cachées.

²⁵וככה גם המעשים הטובים גלוים המה ואשר אינם כן לא יוכלו להסתר׃
