¹In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.

¹La dix-huitième année du règne de Jéroboam, Abija régna sur Juda.

¹בשנת שמונה עשרה למלך ירבעם וימלך אביה על יהודה׃

²Three years reigned he in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

²Il régna trois ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Micaja, fille d'Uriel, de Guibea. Il y eut guerre entre Abija et Jéroboam.

²שלוש שנים מלך בירושלם ושם אמו מיכיהו בת אוריאל מן גבעה ומלחמה היתה בין אביה ובין ירבעם׃

³And Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valor.

³Abija engagea les hostilités avec une armée de vaillants guerriers, quatre cent mille hommes d'élite; et Jéroboam se rangea en bataille contre lui avec huit cent mille hommes d'élite, vaillants guerriers.

³ויאסר אביה את המלחמה בחיל גבורי מלחמה ארבע מאות אלף איש בחור וירבעם ערך עמו מלחמה בשמונה מאות אלף איש בחור גבור חיל׃

⁴And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, and said, Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel:

⁴Du haut du mont Tsemaraïm, qui fait partie de la montagne d'Ephraïm, Abija se leva et dit: Ecoutez-moi, Jéroboam, et tout Israël!

⁴ויקם אביה מעל להר צמרים אשר בהר אפרים ויאמר שמעוני ירבעם וכל ישראל׃

⁵Ought ye not to know that Jehovah, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

⁵Ne devez-vous pas savoir que l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, a donné pour toujours à David la royauté sur Israël, à lui et à ses fils, par une alliance inviolable?

⁵הלא לכם לדעת כי יהוה אלהי ישראל נתן ממלכה לדויד על ישראל לעולם לו ולבניו ברית מלח׃

⁶Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord.

⁶Mais Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, serviteur de Salomon, fils de David, s'est levé et s'est révolté contre son maître.

⁶ויקם ירבעם בן נבט עבד שלמה בן דויד וימרד על אדניו׃

⁷And there were gathered unto him worthless men, base fellows, that strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender-hearted, and could not withstand them.

⁷Des gens de rien, des hommes pervers, se sont rassemblés auprès de lui et l'ont emporté sur Roboam, fils de Salomon. Roboam était jeune et craintif, et il manqua de force devant eux.

⁷ויקבצו עליו אנשים רקים בני בליעל ויתאמצו על רחבעם בן שלמה ורחבעם היה נער ורך לבב ולא התחזק לפניהם׃

⁸And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of Jehovah in the hand of the sons of David; and ye are a great multitude, and there are with you the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods.

⁸Et maintenant, vous pensez triompher du royaume de l'Eternel, qui est entre les mains des fils de David; et vous êtes une multitude nombreuse, et vous avez avec vous les veaux d'or que Jéroboam vous a faits pour dieux.

⁸ועתה אתם אמרים להתחזק לפני ממלכת יהוה ביד בני דויד ואתם המון רב ועמכם עגלי זהב אשר עשה לכם ירבעם לאלהים׃

⁹Have ye not driven out the priests of Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made you priests after the manner of the peoples of [other] lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of [them that are] no gods.

⁹N'avez-vous pas repoussé les sacrificateurs de l'Eternel, les fils d'Aaron et les Lévites, et ne vous êtes-vous pas fait des sacrificateurs, comme les peuples des autres pays? Quiconque venait avec un jeune taureau et sept béliers, afin d'être consacré, devenait sacrificateur de ce qui n'est point Dieu.

⁹הלא הדחתם את כהני יהוה את בני אהרן והלוים ותעשו לכם כהנים כעמי הארצות כל הבא למלא ידו בפר בן בקר ואילם שבעה והיה כהן ללא אלהים׃

¹⁰But as for us, Jehovah is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and [we have] priests ministering unto Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work:

¹⁰Mais pour nous, l'Eternel est notre Dieu, et nous ne l'avons point abandonné, les sacrificateurs au service de l'Eternel sont fils d'Aaron, et les Lévites remplissent leurs fonctions.

¹⁰ואנחנו יהוה אלהינו ולא עזבנהו וכהנים משרתים ליהוה בני אהרן והלוים במלאכת׃

¹¹and they burn unto Jehovah every morning and every evening burnt-offerings and sweet incense: the showbread also [set they] in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of Jehovah our God; but ye have forsaken him.

¹¹Nous offrons chaque matin et chaque soir des holocaustes à l'Eternel, nous brûlons le parfum odoriférant, nous mettons les pains de proposition sur la table pure, et nous allumons chaque soir le chandelier d'or et ses lampes; car nous observons les commandements de l'Eternel, notre Dieu. Et vous, vous l'avez abandonné.

¹¹ומקטרים ליהוה עלות בבקר בבקר ובערב בערב וקטרת סמים ומערכת לחם על השלחן הטהור ומנורת הזהב ונרתיה לבער בערב בערב כי שמרים אנחנו את משמרת יהוה אלהינו ואתם עזבתם אתו׃

¹²And, behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against Jehovah, the God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

¹²Voici, Dieu et ses sacrificateurs sont avec nous, à notre tête, et nous avons les trompettes retentissantes pour les faire résonner contre vous. Enfants d'Israël! ne faites pas la guerre à l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos pères, car vous n'auriez aucun succès.

¹²והנה עמנו בראש האלהים וכהניו וחצצרות התרועה להריע עליכם בני ישראל אל תלחמו עם יהוה אלהי אבתיכם כי לא תצליחו׃

¹³But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.

¹³Jéroboam les prit par derrière au moyen d'une embuscade, et ses troupes étaient en face de Juda, qui avait l'embuscade par derrière.

¹³וירבעם הסב את המארב לבוא מאחריהם ויהיו לפני יהודה והמארב מאחריהם׃

¹⁴And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried unto Jehovah, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.

¹⁴Ceux de Juda s'étant retournés eurent à combattre devant et derrière. Ils crièrent à l'Eternel, et les sacrificateurs sonnèrent des trompettes.

¹⁴ויפנו יהודה והנה להם המלחמה פנים ואחור ויצעקו ליהוה והכהנים מחצצרים בחצצרות׃

¹⁵Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

¹⁵Les hommes de Juda poussèrent un cri de guerre et, au cri de guerre des hommes de Juda, l'Eternel frappa Jéroboam et tout Israël devant Abija et Juda.

¹⁵ויריעו איש יהודה ויהי בהריע איש יהודה והאלהים נגף את ירבעם וכל ישראל לפני אביה ויהודה׃

¹⁶And the children of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand.

¹⁶Les enfants d'Israël s'enfuirent devant Juda, et Dieu les livra entre ses mains.

¹⁶וינוסו בני ישראל מפני יהודה ויתנם אלהים בידם׃

¹⁷And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

¹⁷Abija et son peuple leur firent éprouver une grande défaite, et cinq cent mille hommes d'élite tombèrent morts parmi ceux d'Israël.

¹⁷ויכו בהם אביה ועמו מכה רבה ויפלו חללים מישראל חמש מאות אלף איש בחור׃

¹⁸Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon Jehovah, the God of their fathers.

¹⁸Les enfants d'Israël furent humiliés en ce temps, et les enfants de Juda remportèrent la victoire, parce qu'ils s'étaient appuyés sur l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères.

¹⁸ויכנעו בני ישראל בעת ההיא ויאמצו בני יהודה כי נשענו על יהוה אלהי אבותיהם׃

¹⁹And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephron with the towns thereof.

¹⁹Abija poursuivit Jéroboam et lui prit des villes, Béthel et les villes de son ressort, Jeschana et les villes de son ressort, et Ephron et les villes de son ressort.

¹⁹וירדף אביה אחרי ירבעם וילכד ממנו ערים את בית אל ואת בנותיה ואת ישנה ואת בנותיה ואת עפרון ובנתיה׃

²⁰Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and Jehovah smote him, and he died.

²⁰Jéroboam n'eut plus de force du temps d'Abija; et l'Eternel le frappa, et il mourut.

²⁰ולא עצר כח ירבעם עוד בימי אביהו ויגפהו יהוה וימת׃

²¹But Abijah waxed mighty, and took unto himself fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.

²¹Mais Abija devint puissant; il eut quatorze femmes, et engendra vingt-deux fils et seize filles.

²¹ויתחזק אביהו וישא לו נשים ארבע עשרה ויולד עשרים ושנים בנים ושש עשרה בנות׃

²²And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the commentary of the prophet Iddo.

²²Le reste des actions d'Abija, ce qu'il a fait et ce qu'il a dit, cela est écrit dans les mémoires du prophète Iddo.

²²ויתר דברי אביה ודרכיו ודבריו כתובים במדרש הנביא עדו׃
