¹So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.

¹Abija se coucha avec ses pères, et on l'enterra dans la ville de David. Et Asa, son fils, régna à sa place. De son temps, le pays fut en repos pendant dix ans.

¹וישכב אביה עם אבתיו ויקברו אתו בעיר דויד וימלך אסא בנו תחתיו בימיו שקטה הארץ עשר שנים׃

²And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of Jehovah his God:

²Asa fit ce qui est bien et droit aux yeux de l'Eternel, son Dieu.

²ויעש אסא הטוב והישר בעיני יהוה אלהיו׃

³for he took away the foreign altars, and the high places, and brake down the pillars, and hewed down the Asherim,

³Il fit disparaître les autels de l'étranger et les hauts lieux, il brisa les statues et abattit les idoles.

³ויסר את מזבחות הנכר והבמות וישבר את המצבות ויגדע את האשרים׃

⁴and commanded Judah to seek Jehovah, the God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.

⁴Il ordonna à Juda de rechercher l'Eternel, le Dieu de ses pères, et de pratiquer la loi et les commandements.

⁴ויאמר ליהודה לדרוש את יהוה אלהי אבותיהם ולעשות התורה והמצוה׃

⁵Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun-images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.

⁵Il fit disparaître de toutes les villes de Juda les hauts lieux et les statues consacrées au soleil. Et le royaume fut en repos devant lui.

⁵ויסר מכל ערי יהודה את הבמות ואת החמנים ותשקט הממלכה לפניו׃

⁶And he built fortified cities in Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because Jehovah had given him rest.

⁶Il bâtit des villes fortes en Juda; car le pays fut tranquille et il n'y eut pas de guerre contre lui pendant ces années-là, parce que l'Eternel lui donna du repos.

⁶ויבן ערי מצורה ביהודה כי שקטה הארץ ואין עמו מלחמה בשנים האלה כי הניח יהוה לו׃

⁷For he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars; the land is yet before us, because we have sought Jehovah our God; we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.

⁷Il dit à Juda: Bâtissons ces villes, et entourons-les de murs, de tours, de portes et de barres; le pays est encore devant nous, car nous avons recherché l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous l'avons recherché, et il nous a donné du repos de tous côtés. Ils bâtirent donc, et réussirent.

⁷ויאמר ליהודה נבנה את הערים האלה ונסב חומה ומגדלים דלתים ובריחים עודנו הארץ לפנינו כי דרשנו את יהוה אלהינו דרשנו וינח לנו מסביב ויבנו ויצליחו׃

⁸And Asa had an army that bare bucklers and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valor.

⁸Asa avait une armée de trois cent mille hommes de Juda, portant le bouclier et la lance, et de deux cent quatre-vingt mille de Benjamin, portant le bouclier et tirant de l'arc, tous vaillants hommes.

⁸ויהי לאסא חיל נשא צנה ורמח מיהודה שלש מאות אלף ומבנימן נשאי מגן ודרכי קשת מאתים ושמונים אלף כל אלה גבורי חיל׃

⁹And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an army of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and he came unto Mareshah.

⁹Zérach, l'Ethiopien, sortit contre eux avec une armée d'un million d'hommes et trois cents chars, et il s'avança jusqu'à Maréscha.

⁹ויצא אליהם זרח הכושי בחיל אלף אלפים ומרכבות שלש מאות ויבא עד מרשה׃

¹⁰Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

¹⁰Asa marcha au-devant de lui, et ils se rangèrent en bataille dans la vallée de Tsephata, près de Maréscha.

¹⁰ויצא אסא לפניו ויערכו מלחמה בגיא צפתה למרשה׃

¹¹And Asa cried unto Jehovah his God, and said, Jehovah, there is none besides thee to help, between the mighty and him that hath no strength: help us, O Jehovah our God; for we rely on thee, and in thy name are we come against this multitude. O Jehovah, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.

¹¹Asa invoqua l'Eternel, son Dieu, et dit: Eternel, toi seul peux venir en aide au faible comme au fort: viens à notre aide, Eternel, notre Dieu! car c'est sur toi que nous nous appuyons, et nous sommes venus en ton nom contre cette multitude. Eternel, tu es notre Dieu: que ce ne soit pas l'homme qui l'emporte sur toi!

¹¹ויקרא אסא אל יהוה אלהיו ויאמר יהוה אין עמך לעזור בין רב לאין כח עזרנו יהוה אלהינו כי עליך נשענו ובשמך באנו על ההמון הזה יהוה אלהינו אתה אל יעצר עמך אנוש׃

¹²So Jehovah smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.

¹²L'Eternel frappa les Ethiopiens devant Asa et devant Juda, et les Ethiopiens prirent la fuite.

¹²ויגף יהוה את הכושים לפני אסא ולפני יהודה וינסו הכושים׃

¹³And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and there fell of the Ethiopians so many that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before Jehovah, and before his host; and they carried away very much booty.

¹³Asa et le peuple qui était avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu'à Guérar, et les Ethiopiens tombèrent sans pouvoir sauver leur vie, car ils furent détruits par l'Eternel et par son armée. Asa et son peuple firent un très grand butin;

¹³וירדפם אסא והעם אשר עמו עד לגרר ויפל מכושים לאין להם מחיה כי נשברו לפני יהוה ולפני מחנהו וישאו שלל הרבה מאד׃

¹⁴And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of Jehovah came upon them: and they despoiled all the cities; for there was much spoil in them.

¹⁴ils frappèrent toutes les villes des environs de Guérar, car la terreur de l'Eternel s'était emparée d'elles, et ils pillèrent toutes les villes, dont les dépouilles furent considérables.

¹⁴ויכו את כל הערים סביבות גרר כי היה פחד יהוה עליהם ויבזו את כל הערים כי בזה רבה היתה בהם׃

¹⁵They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep in abundance, and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.

¹⁵Ils frappèrent aussi les tentes des troupeaux, et ils emmenèrent une grande quantité de brebis et de chameaux. Puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

¹⁵וגם אהלי מקנה הכו וישבו צאן לרב וגמלים וישבו ירושלם׃
