1And it came to pass after this, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
1Après cela, les fils de Moab et les fils d'Ammon, et avec eux des Maonites, marchèrent contre Josaphat pour lui faire la guerre.
1ויהי אחריכן באו בני מואב ובני עמון ועמהם מהעמונים על יהושפט למלחמה׃
2Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea from Syria; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar (the same is En-gedi).
2On vint en informer Josaphat, en disant: Une multitude nombreuse s'avance contre toi depuis l'autre côté de la mer, depuis la Syrie, et ils sont à Hatsatson-Thamar, qui est En-Guédi.
2ויבאו ויגידו ליהושפט לאמר בא עליך המון רב מעבר לים מארם והנם בחצצון תמר היא עין גדי׃
3And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek unto Jehovah; and he proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
3Dans sa frayeur, Josaphat se disposa à chercher l'Eternel, et il publia un jeûne pour tout Juda.
3וירא ויתן יהושפט את פניו לדרוש ליהוה ויקרא צום על כל יהודה׃
4And Judah gathered themselves together, to seek [help] of Jehovah: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek Jehovah.
4Juda s'assembla pour invoquer l'Eternel, et l'on vint de toutes les villes de Juda pour chercher l'Eternel.
4ויקבצו יהודה לבקש מיהוה גם מכל ערי יהודה באו לבקש את יהוה׃
5And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Jehovah, before the new court;
5Josaphat se présenta au milieu de l'assemblée de Juda et de Jérusalem, dans la maison de l'Eternel, devant le nouveau parvis.
5ויעמד יהושפט בקהל יהודה וירושלם בבית יהוה לפני החצר החדשה׃
6and he said, O Jehovah, the God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and art not thou ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? and in thy hand is power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee.
6Et il dit: Eternel, Dieu de nos pères, n'es-tu pas Dieu dans les cieux, et n'est-ce pas toi qui domines sur tous les royaumes des nations? N'est-ce pas toi qui as en main la force et la puissance, et à qui nul ne peut résister?
6ויאמר יהוה אלהי אבתינו הלא אתה הוא אלהים בשמים ואתה מושל בכל ממלכות הגוים ובידך כח וגבורה ואין עמך להתיצב׃
7Didst not thou, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and give it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever?
7N'est-ce pas toi, ô notre Dieu, qui as chassé les habitants de ce pays devant ton peuple d'Israël, et qui l'as donné pour toujours à la postérité d'Abraham qui t'aimait?
7הלא אתה אלהינו הורשת את ישבי הארץ הזאת מלפני עמך ישראל ותתנה לזרע אברהם אהבך לעולם׃
8And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,
8Ils l'ont habité, et ils t'y ont bâti un sanctuaire pour ton nom, en disant:
8וישבו בה ויבנו לך בה מקדש לשמך לאמר׃
9If evil come upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before thee, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, and thou wilt hear and save.
9S'il nous survient quelque calamité, l'épée, le jugement, la peste ou la famine, nous nous présenterons devant cette maison et devant toi, car ton nom est dans cette maison, nous crierons à toi du sein de notre détresse, et tu exauceras et tu sauveras!
9אם תבוא עלינו רעה חרב שפוט ודבר ורעב נעמדה לפני הבית הזה ולפניך כי שמך בבית הזה ונזעק אליך מצרתנו ותשמע ותושיע׃
10And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and destroyed them not;
10Maintenant voici, les fils d'Ammon et de Moab et ceux de la montagne de Séir, chez lesquels tu n'as pas permis à Israël d'entrer quand il venait du pays d'Egypte, -car il s'est détourné d'eux et ne les a pas détruits, -
10ועתה הנה בני עמון ומואב והר שעיר אשר לא נתתה לישראל לבוא בהם בבאם מארץ מצרים כי סרו מעליהם ולא השמידום׃
11behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.
11les voici qui nous récompensent en venant nous chasser de ton héritage, dont tu nous as mis en possession.
11והנה הם גמלים עלינו לבוא לגרשנו מירשתך אשר הורשתנו׃
12O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but out eyes are upon thee.
12O notre Dieu, n'exerceras-tu pas tes jugements sur eux? Car nous sommes sans force devant cette multitude nombreuse qui s'avance contre nous, et nous ne savons que faire, mais nos yeux sont sur toi.
12אלהינו הלא תשפט בם כי אין בנו כח לפני ההמון הרב הזה הבא עלינו ואנחנו לא נדע מה נעשה כי עליך עינינו׃
13And all Judah stood before Jehovah, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
13Tout Juda se tenait debout devant l'Eternel, avec leurs petits enfants, leurs femmes et leurs fils.
13וכל יהודה עמדים לפני יהוה גם טפם נשיהם ובניהם׃
14Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of Jehovah in the midst of the assembly;
14Alors l'esprit de l'Eternel saisit au milieu de l'assemblée Jachaziel, fils de Zacharie, fils de Benaja, fils de Jeïel, fils de Matthania, Lévite, d'entre les fils d'Asaph.
14ויחזיאל בן זכריהו בן בניה בן יעיאל בן מתניה הלוי מן בני אסף היתה עליו רוח יהוה בתוך הקהל׃
15and he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat: Thus saith Jehovah unto you, Fear not ye, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.
15Et Jachaziel dit: Soyez attentifs, tout Juda et habitants de Jérusalem, et toi, roi Josaphat! Ainsi vous parle l'Eternel: Ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point devant cette multitude nombreuse, car ce ne sera pas vous qui combattrez, ce sera Dieu.
15ויאמר הקשיבו כל יהודה וישבי ירושלם והמלך יהושפט כה אמר יהוה לכם אתם אל תיראו ואל תחתו מפני ההמון הרב הזה כי לא לכם המלחמה כי לאלהים׃
16To-morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the ascent of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
16Demain, descendez contre eux; ils vont monter par la colline de Tsits, et vous les trouverez à l'extrémité de la vallée, en face du désert de Jeruel.
16מחר רדו עליהם הנם עלים במעלה הציץ ומצאתם אתם בסוף הנחל פני מדבר ירואל׃
17Ye shall not need to fight in this [battle]: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of Jehovah with you, O Judah and Jerusalem; fear not, nor be dismayed: to-morrow go out against them: for Jehovah is with you.
17Vous n'aurez point à combattre en cette affaire: présentez-vous, tenez-vous là, et vous verrez la délivrance que l'Eternel vous accordera. Juda et Jérusalem, ne craignez point et ne vous effrayez point, demain, sortez à leur rencontre, et l'Eternel sera avec vous!
17לא לכם להלחם בזאת התיצבו עמדו וראו את ישועת יהוה עמכם יהודה וירושלם אל תיראו ואל תחתו מחר צאו לפניהם ויהוה עמכם׃
18And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before Jehovah, worshipping Jehovah.
18Josaphat s'inclina le visage contre terre, et tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem tombèrent devant l'Eternel pour se prosterner en sa présence.
18ויקד יהושפט אפים ארצה וכל יהודה וישבי ירושלם נפלו לפני יהוה להשתחות ליהוה׃
19And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Jehovah, the God of Israel, with an exceeding loud voice.
19Les Lévites d'entre les fils des Kehathites et d'entre les fils des Koréites se levèrent pour célébrer d'une voix forte et haute l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
19ויקמו הלוים מן בני הקהתים ומן בני הקרחים להלל ליהוה אלהי ישראל בקול גדול למעלה׃
20And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem: believe in Jehovah your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
20Le lendemain, ils se mirent en marche de grand matin pour le désert de Tekoa. A leur départ, Josaphat se présenta et dit: Ecoutez-moi, Juda et habitants de Jérusalem! Confiez-vous en l'Eternel, votre Dieu, et vous serez affermis; confiez-vous en ses prophètes, et vous réussirez.
20וישכימו בבקר ויצאו למדבר תקוע ובצאתם עמד יהושפט ויאמר שמעוני יהודה וישבי ירושלם האמינו ביהוה אלהיכם ותאמנו האמינו בנביאיו והצליחו׃
21And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed them that should sing unto Jehovah, and give praise in holy array, as they went out before the army, and say, Give thanks unto Jehovah; for his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever.
21Puis, d'accord avec le peuple, il nomma des chantres qui, revêtus d'ornements sacrés, et marchant devant l'armée, célébraient l'Eternel et disaient: Louez l'Eternel, car sa miséricorde dure à toujours!
21ויועץ אל העם ויעמד משררים ליהוה ומהללים להדרת קדש בצאת לפני החלוץ ואמרים הודו ליהוה כי לעולם חסדו׃
22And when they began to sing and to praise, Jehovah set liers-in-wait against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, that were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
22Au moment où l'on commençait les chants et les louanges, l'Eternel plaça une embuscade contre les fils d'Ammon et de Moab et ceux de la montagne de Séir, qui étaient venus contre Juda. Et ils furent battus.
22ובעת החלו ברנה ותהלה נתן יהוה מארבים על בני עמון מואב והר שעיר הבאים ליהודה וינגפו׃
23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.
23Les fils d'Ammon et de Moab se jetèrent sur les habitants de la montagne de Séir pour les dévouer par interdit et les exterminer; et quand ils en eurent fini avec les habitants de Séir, ils s'aidèrent les uns les autres à se détruire.
23ויעמדו בני עמון ומואב על ישבי הר שעיר להחרים ולהשמיד וככלותם ביושבי שעיר עזרו איש ברעהו למשחית׃
24And when Judah came to the watch-tower of the wilderness, they looked upon the multitude; and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none that escaped.
24Lorsque Juda fut arrivé sur la hauteur d'où l'on aperçoit le désert, ils regardèrent du côté de la multitude, et voici, c'étaient des cadavres étendus à terre, et personne n'avait échappé.
24ויהודה בא על המצפה למדבר ויפנו אל ההמון והנם פגרים נפלים ארצה ואין פליטה׃
25And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much.
25Josaphat et son peuple allèrent prendre leurs dépouilles; ils trouvèrent parmi les cadavres d'abondantes richesses et des objets précieux, et ils en enlevèrent tant qu'ils ne purent tout emporter. Ils mirent trois jours au pillage du butin, car il était considérable.
25ויבא יהושפט ועמו לבז את שללם וימצאו בהם לרב ורכוש ופגרים וכלי חמדות וינצלו להם לאין משא ויהיו ימים שלושה בזזים את השלל כי רב הוא׃
26And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Beracah; for there they blessed Jehovah: therefore the name of that place was called The valley of Beracah unto this day.
26Le quatrième jour, ils s'assemblèrent dans la vallée de Beraca, où ils bénirent l'Eternel; c'est pourquoi ils appelèrent ce lieu vallée de Beraca, nom qui lui est resté jusqu'à ce jour.
26וביום הרבעי נקהלו לעמק ברכה כי שם ברכו את יהוה על כן קראו את שם המקום ההוא עמק ברכה עד היום׃
27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Jehovah had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
27Tous les hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem, ayant à leur tête Josaphat, partirent joyeux pour retourner à Jérusalem, car l'Eternel les avait remplis de joie en les délivrant de leurs ennemis.
27וישבו כל איש יהודה וירושלם ויהושפט בראשם לשוב אל ירושלם בשמחה כי שמחם יהוה מאויביהם׃
28And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of Jehovah.
28Ils entrèrent à Jérusalem et dans la maison de l'Eternel, au son des luths, des harpes et des trompettes.
28ויבאו ירושלם בנבלים ובכנרות ובחצצרות אל בית יהוה׃
29And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries, when they heard that Jehovah fought against the enemies of Israel.
29La terreur de l'Eternel s'empara de tous les royaumes des autres pays, lorsqu'ils apprirent que l'Eternel avait combattu contre les ennemis d'Israël.
29ויהי פחד אלהים על כל ממלכות הארצות בשמעם כי נלחם יהוה עם אויבי ישראל׃
30So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; for his God gave him rest round about.
30Et le royaume de Josaphat fut tranquille, et son Dieu lui donna du repos de tous côtés.
30ותשקט מלכות יהושפט וינח לו אלהיו מסביב׃
31And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
31Josaphat régna sur Juda. Il avait trente-cinq ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna vingt-cinq ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Azuba, fille de Schilchi.
31וימלך יהושפט על יהודה בן שלשים וחמש שנה במלכו ועשרים וחמש שנה מלך בירושלם ושם אמו עזובה בת שלחי׃
32And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah.
32Il marcha dans la voie de son père Asa, et ne s'en détourna point, faisant ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel.
32וילך בדרך אביו אסא ולא סר ממנה לעשות הישר בעיני יהוה׃
33Howbeit the high places were not taken away; neither as yet had the people set their hearts unto the God of their fathers.
33Seulement, les hauts lieux ne disparurent point, et le peuple n'avait point encore le coeur fermement attaché au Dieu de ses pères.
33אך הבמות לא סרו ועוד העם לא הכינו לבבם לאלהי אבתיהם׃
34Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is inserted in the book of the kings of Israel.
34Le reste des actions de Josaphat, les premières et les dernières, cela est écrit dans les mémoires de Jéhu, fils de Hanani, lesquels sont insérés dans le livre des rois d'Israël.
34ויתר דברי יהושפט הראשנים והאחרנים הנם כתובים בדברי יהוא בן חנני אשר העלה על ספר מלכי ישראל׃
35And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel; the same did very wickedly:
35Après cela, Josaphat, roi de Juda, s'associa avec le roi d'Israël, Achazia, dont la conduite était impie.
35ואחריכן אתחבר יהושפט מלך יהודה עם אחזיה מלך ישראל הוא הרשיע לעשות׃
36and he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion-geber.
36Il s'associa avec lui pour construire des navires destinés à aller à Tarsis, et ils firent les navires à Etsjon-Guéber.
36ויחברהו עמו לעשות אניות ללכת תרשיש ויעשו אניות בעציון גבר׃
37Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, Jehovah hath destroyed thy works. And the ships were broken, so that they were not able to go to Tarshish.
37Alors Eliézer, fils de Dodava, de Maréscha, prophétisa contre Josaphat, et dit: Parce que tu t'es associé avec Achazia, l'Eternel détruit ton oeuvre. Et les navires furent brisés, et ne purent aller à Tarsis.
37ויתנבא אליעזר בן דדוהו ממרשה על יהושפט לאמר כהתחברך עם אחזיהו פרץ יהוה את מעשיך וישברו אניות ולא עצרו ללכת אל תרשיש׃
